8. Rice Alumni Hiring -- Summer Camp Instructor Positions
Hi,
I'm an owner of Wonder-Space Education & Technology Center, located off of Greenbriar and 59. Wonder-Space provides a "space" for minds to "wonder." We are currently seeking bright, motivated, and energetic individuals to join our summer team. Our summer team consists of camp counselors (mostly college students) who will teach technology related subjects throughout the summer (June 2 - August 22). Wonder-Space hosts a series of computer camps each summer for students aged 7-17. We have a series of courses that include:
- Game Design
- Game Modding: Half Life 2
- 3D Graphics
- Animation
- Web Design featuring Flash Animation
- Robotics (Vex Mindstorms)
- Digital Video and several other courses.
We're actively recruiting Summer Instructors to help us to run our Summer programs. Instructors should have a background in consumer computer usage and enjoy working with technology and kids. Specific skills such as Adobe Photoshop, MS Office Suite, Programming, Half Life 2 Gaming, and Web Design are a plus, however unnecessary. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who like to teach and are willing to learn about new topics! We provide all of your training. Work in a small business atmosphere. We are highly entrepreneurial and we work together in small groups so that everyone's ideas are always expressed. There are significant opportunities for future growth with the company including serving as a director in future Summers and even full time positions during the Academic Year. The ideal candidate will be able to gain a lot of business, technical, and educational experience out of this Summer. We are looking for great people to receive a GREAT summer experience and take it on with them to their work environments. Self starters, and leaders need apply! Some of our past instructors have gone on to work at NASA, Nvidia, EA (game design), and other great places. Camp is located in Houston Texas and runs for 11 weeks. Positions run through the middle of August. Salary ranges from $9-15/hr depending on experience and course difficulty. Plenty of bonus opportunities to earn more money!!
Job Requirements:
Majors : Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, non technical majors with interest in technology
Each instructor is expected to have working knowledge of any of the following topics:
(1) Object Oriented Programming--Java/C++
(2) Graphics/Animation
(3) Robotics VEX Mindstorms
(4) Web Design featuring Flash
(5) Gaming Experience and Design
(6) Digital Video Production
(7) General Computer Knowledge--Keyboarding, MS Office, etc.
Candidate need not have extensive knowledge of each topics but must be willing to learn and teach about those topics. We can train you. We are more interested in smart individuals who enjoy teaching and spending time with like-minded young people ( i.e. high school and middle school students). Gaming experience (Half Life 2, Unreal Tournament, etc.) is a plus as we have regular gaming tournaments at camp. Our students love to play games, and a large portion of our courses focus on Game Development. No need for game development skills, just an interest in gaming is sufficient. Network experience is also a plus. Non Technical majors are also invited to apply.
Please send resume along with a couple paragraphs describing why you want to be a camp instructor and why you would be a great counselor. Be sure to include major, relevant courses taken, past work experience, and GPA in your resume. Also, take a look at the courses we offer and let me know which you think you are able to teach or would like to learn more about.
Courses offered: http://www.summer.wonder-space.com/courses.php
Send resume and paragraph to josefa@wonder-space.com Check out www.summer.wonder-space.com for more information.
Thanks, hope to meet some of you guys soon!

18. Representative Garnet Coleman is Visiting Rice
Come hear the Congressman speak about health issues affecting women of color in Texas!
Date: Thursday, March 27, 2008
Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: Rayzor 106
The Black Student Association, Rice Pre-Medical Society, College Democrats of America - Rice Chapter, and Rice for Choice are hosting State Representative Garnet F. Coleman for a discussion of health issues affecting women of color in Texas. Representative Coleman will share with Rice students his personal and legislative experiences related to a variety of women's health issues, including reproductive health. Our event does not seek to take a particular stance on any political issues nor have a distinctly partisan tone, as many of the groups involved in sponsoring the event are inherently apolitical in nature. Still, this event will enable many students to interact with Rep. Coleman, who represents the 134th District (which includes Rice University) of the Texas House of Representatives. We hope to benefit from exposure to his observations and opinions about policies related to women's health in our state based on his experience serving on the House Public Health Committee.

19. SMOG JOG
Each year, 144 lung cancer deaths and 1,791 heart attacks in Texas are attributable to power plant pollution.

The Rice Environmental Club will do a SMOG JOG to remind Houston drivers of the numerous human health and environmental impacts of our huge consumption of fossil fuels. We will urge commuters to take advantage of more sustainable forms of transportation such as carpooling, fuel-efficient vehicles, and public transportation.

WHEN: 5:30-6:30 PM, Tuesday, April 1, 2008 (April Fools Day)

4. Rupp to be Commencement Speaker
International Rescue Committee President George Rupp chosen as Rice University's 2008 commencement speaker
BY B.J. ALMOND
Rice News Staff
For 75 years the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has brought refugees from harm to home, and the organization's leader, George Rupp, will share some of those incredible journeys when he presents Rice's 2008 commencement address.
Touted as "one of the first to respond, one of the last to leave," the IRC has established a global network of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, health-care specialists, educators, community leaders and volunteers to provide shelter, clean water, health care and education to millions of people whose lives have been disrupted by violence and oppression. Rupp has been president and CEO of the IRC since 2002.
"The name George Rupp is probably most familiar to the Rice community as the university's fifth president, but it was his current role with the International Rescue Committee that piqued the interest of the commencement speaker selection committee," said committee chair Michael Gustin, professor of biochemistry and cell biology.
"The committee wanted someone who could speak to the Rice students about leadership and the big picture of their role in the world," Gustin said. This is particularly relevant as a number of Rice students focus their volunteer service and research efforts on global health and poverty, he added.
Martel College senior Sanna Ronkainen, who served on the selection committee, said, "George Rupp's commitment to serving those in need around the world as the president of the International Rescue Committee is truly admirable and inspiring for those of us going out into the real world."
Since its founding in 1933 at the suggestion of Albert Einstein, the IRC has become one of the largest and leading charities in the world. IRC personnel are in 25 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster.
In 2006 alone, the IRC aided more than 15 million people in countries inhabited by the most vulnerable populations. Recently the IRC:
* Gave more than 3 million people access to clean water and sanitation
* Trained more than 10,800 educators and supported schools attended by 316,000 children
* Counseled and cared for nearly 140,000 survivors of sexual violence
* Reunited more than 2,400 children and former child soldiers with their families and cared for another 9,300 young people
* Helped resettle 5,000 newly arrived refugees in the U.S. and provided services to 18,000 other refugees
* Helped more than 6,400 refugees settle into new homes, schools and communities in the U.S.
First-person accounts of the IRC's emergency relief, rehabilitation and protection of human rights are readily available on YouTube.
Named one of 10 Gold Star Charities by the Forbes Investment Guide, the IRC is consistently commended by charity watchdog groups for the efficient use of its financial support and the effectiveness of its work. Of every dollar the IRC spends, 90 cents goes to programs and services that directly benefit refugees and war-affected populations.
As the IRC's CEO, Rupp oversees the agency's relief and rehabilitation operations and its refugee resettlement and assistance programs. He also leads the IRC's advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C.; Geneva; Brussels, Belgium; and other capitals around the globe.
Rupp's responsibilities often take him to IRC program sites in Europe and Asia, where earlier this month emergency aid was given to some 7,000 Bhutanese refugees who were left without homes, clothing and food after an accidental fire roared through their camp in eastern Nepal. He has also traveled to Africa, where the IRC provided critical assistance to more than 700,000 people uprooted by the brutal ethnic and political violence in Darfur, Sudan.
While a trip to Houston can't compare to such challenging international destinations, Rupp is very much looking forward to his return to the campus. "I have very fond memories of Rice and am delighted at the prospect of returning for commencement, which I always considered a highlight of the year," he said. "Just to be back in that fabulous Academic Quad will be a thrill. I feel exhilarated that another thousand Rice alums will be shaking President Leebron's hand and then processing together from the Sallyport."
President David Leebron praised the selection of Rupp. "I am really delighted that the graduation committee sought a speaker who exemplifies the contributions we can make to improve our world, and especially the lives of the least fortunate among us," Leebron said. "No one represents this better than George Rupp and his work over the last six years as president of the International Rescue Committee. It's an added bonus that this provides an opportunity to bring back to Rice someone who understands what we stand for and who contributed so much to our success."
Before joining the IRC, Rupp was president of Columbia University -- the position that succeeded his 1985-93 presidency at Rice. He was the Lord O'Brian Professor of Divinity and dean of the Divinity School at Harvard before coming to Rice.
Rupp received an A.B. from Princeton University in 1964, a B.D. from Yale Divinity School in 1967 and a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1972. He is the author of numerous articles and five books, including "Globalization Challenged: Conviction, Conflict, Community" (2006).
Rice's 95th commencement will be held May 10.

Any member of the Rice community may submit a nomination. Qualified candidates may be considered for any of the five awards listed below. If you have any questions please contact the Office of Student Activities (x4097).
THE RICE UNIVERSITY SERVICE AWARD, given in memory of Dean of Students Hugh Scott Cameron, is awarded to as many as four individuals of the Rice student population, past and present, who have been most exemplary in rendering service to the student body. Preferably recipients should not be receiving remuneration for their services unless their work has been of a quality above and beyond that ordinarily rendered.
THE SALLYPORT AWARD is presented by the Association of Rice Alumni to recognize a deserving:
(i) undergraduate degree candidate who has made contributions to the Rice community above his or her individual college and who may not otherwise be recognized; and
(ii) graduate degree candidate who has made contributions to the Rice community above his or her individual department and who may not otherwise be recognized. A faculty letter of recommendation and resume are required for the Sallyport Award.
THE OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARDS are given to graduating seniors who have contributed the most to excellence at Rice University. The successful candidate(s) will have recognized a need in the community, developed objectives, and implemented or established program(s) that would benefit the community and will realize no personal gain for these efforts.
THE ALAN GROB PRIZE is awarded annually to the Rice undergraduate who, through service to the larger community, has demonstrated the most devotion to the needs and interests of the economically and culturally disadvantaged. 6. Web Developer Needed

Hello,
I'm a recent Rice graduate involved with a new human rights and music organization. We're almost done getting our initial website up and running, but the volunteer developer we were working with dropped out at the last minute to pursue more lucrative opportunities. We already have the CSS templates done - we just need someone to help refine the website a little bit and create one more page and a blog. If you know how to program and are willing to devote a few hours to help a good cause, please contact me.
Thanks!

5. Help Wanted: Paper Editing for Chinese Grad Student

I am a graduate student of Economics Department at Rice. My name is Jingyi Xue and I am from China. :) I have written a paper in English and am preparing for publication. However, when I presented the paper to my professors for comments, almost all of them said that while it is nice work, I should improve the language prior to publication. I am looking for some help improving the language of the paper. I need it to sound more professional, but my capability in English is somehow limited. My friend suggested that I could come to Hanszen. I am willing to pay for the language improvement job. Thanks you very much for your kind help.

2. “Oil On Ice”

Narrated by Peter Coyote, is an award-winning documentary that connects the fate of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the conflict over drilling for oil there to critical decisions America makes about energy policy and transportation choices. The film examines the battle over one of America's last great wild places, which is currently at the center of a national energy debate. Caught in the balance are the Gwich'in Indians and the migratory wildlife in this fragile ecosystem. Through stunning footage and in-depth interviews, this entertaining film links seemingly unrelated matters such as energy independence, global warming, Native American rights, wildlife and wild lands protection.
*Guest Speaker: * Following the film, Terrel Dixon of the University of Houston will lead a short discussion on issues related in the film.
*When: *Wednesday, March 12, 2008 @ 7pm
*Where: *Rice Media Center, Rice University
*Cost:* Free, however donations will be accepted at the door.

1. Goliard Applications Due Today at 4:56PM

*Goliard (gol´yerd, -yär´) noun: A wandering student in medieval Europe disposed to conviviality, license, and the making of ribald and satirical Latin songs.*

Do you dream of traveling to a silver-mining mountain town in Mexico, just to eat a legendary stuffed bollito? Have you ever thought about touring a Siberian vodka distillery, even though you've never had vodka and don't speak a lick of Russian?

Then the Goliard Scholarship is for you.The Goliard is not intended to pad your resume, to get you that consulting job, or to "help the children."

This $2000 summer travel award is a whimsical, yet somehow earnest, effort by the Goliard Board to encourage international understanding through direct and visceral cultural interactions.

Previous Goliard scholars have explored sword making in Toledo, danced on tables in Shanghai, jigged in Ireland, and bicycled through a tulip tour

Submit your one- to three-page travel proposal -- however unlikely, capricious, or heartfelt— to the Goliard Board at application@goliard.org by 4:56 pm on Monday, March 10, 2008.

Finalists will be interviewed Saturday, March 15, after Beer Bike, in the Ley Student Center Courtyard. Ties, etc., are discouraged.

For application details, visit www.goliard.org or contact Katherine Kuster at kkuster@rice.edu.

The Goliard scholarship was established by a group of troublemakers from Sid Rich. Their hope, in creating the Goliard, was to spread Rice's unique ribaldry throughout the globe. Changing the world is a happy byproduct.

2. 2008 Year-End Awards -- Call for Nominations

The Office of Student Activities, the SA Awards Committee, the Association of Rice Alumni, and the Community Involvement Center are coordinating their respective year-end awards that recognize service by students to the Rice community.

This award recognizes excellence not only in service but also performance, dedication, and character. The contribution of excellence of these students should reflect a commitment over time.

THE MORTY RICH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a continuing student who has distinguished himself/herself through commitment and service to Rice and/or to the greater community.

The recipient must be a current Rice University undergraduate, but does not have to be continuing (can be a graduating senior).

You may nominate a student for one or more of the above awards at:

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~stact/awards.html

Dear Rice Students:

Please join us on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 3:00 p.m., Herzstein Hall 212, to meet and talk with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sonia Nazario one-on-one.

Ms. Nazario, the author of Enrique's Journey, is coming to Rice as part of

the President's Lecture Series/President's Lecture Series of Diverse Scholars to talk about the plight of immigrants' children.

A projects reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Ms. Nazario and her photographer undertook the rugged journey on the "train of death" from Honduras to see for themselves what these children go through to be reunited with their parents in the United States. Her book is soon to be released as an HBO movie.

Sonia Nazario is a dynamic speaker and a warm, wonderful person with a great story to tell. We are fortunate that she has agreed to take time out of her busy schedule to speak at Rice. It is an excellent opportunity for you to network and learn more about this interesting and important issue. Don't miss this opportunity to talk with her. And be sure to come back the evening of March 13 at 8:00 p.m. for her lecture in the Grand Hall of the RMC.
