4. IT Security alert: email attachments threaten Rice computers

At least six malicious email campaigns have successfully targeted rice.edu accounts on
February 24-25, 2010.

The hoaxes arrived from forged email addresses and under titles such as:

"a friend invites to you to Twitter" or "Invitation@twitter.com"
"Thank you from Google"
"You received a Hallmark E-Card"
"Hi" or "Jessica would like to be your friend on hi5!"
"Amazon Shipping Information"

These campaigns are successful because Rice community members continue to open email
attachments containing viruses.

If you receive ANY email message with an attachment that you did not specifically
request, immediately delete the message. The infection process begins as soon as you
click the attachment. Currently, only Windows computers are affected.

Additional details are available on the IT Security website:

5. Conversation Partner Program

Rice University’s Intensive English Program, offered through the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, is recruiting Conversation Partners. We have approximately 215 students from over 38 different countries in our English as a Second Language Program, all of whom are looking to meet native English speakers.
Our Conversation Partner Program is not a tutoring program. The main goal is our students to be able to practice English in an informal setting. The time commitment required may be as little as an hour a week. We will match you up with one of our students. Where and when you meet will be decided by you and your partner. No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.
Next session dates: March 9 – April 28.
If you are interested, please respond to fl@rice.edu by Friday, March 12, 2010.

5. Rice Cinema: Ang Lee Retrospective

Rice Cinema: Ang Lee Retrospective
Rice University - Rice Cinema
February 19-February 21, 2010
Rice University - Rice Cinema, Houston presents an Ang Lee Retrospective. Friday, February 19, 2010 - Sunday, February 21, 2010.The Ang Lee Film Retrospective opens with a reception on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 6:30 and will feature a Tai Chi demonstration (Yang style-as seen in the film) by Wu's Martial Arts Association of Houston - Master Chienli and Master Ernie Wu.

Ang Lee has made his mark on cinema with films like BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, but he began his career making small films about his home country of Taiwan. Here we present three early films by this Taiwanese filmmaker. Sponsored by the Taiwan Economic & Cultural Office, with special thanks to Mr. T.K. Lee. TUI SHO (Pushing Hands), February 19, 7:30 P.M. XU JAN (The Wedding Banquet), February 20, 7:00 P.M. YIN SHI NAN NU (Eat Drink Man Woman), February 21, 7:00 P.M.

Schedule of Films:
TUI SHO (Pushing Hands)
February 19, 7:30 P.M.
Released in 1992, Taiwanese film Pushing Hands (Tui shou) was Ang Lee's directorial debut. The plot follows a Chinese man's struggle to acclimatize himself to American life and culture.
Plot Synopsis:   An elderly Chinese tai chi chuan teacher emigrates from Beijing to live with his son, American daughter-in-law, and grandson in a New York City suburb. A “fish out of water” in Western culture, the grandfather’s traditional Chinese ideas of Confucian relationships within the family clash with the more informal Western emphasis on the individual he finds in his son’s home.
The friction in the family caused by these differing expectations leads the grandfather to move out. In the process, he learns some comical and poignant lessons about how he must adapt to his new surroundings in order to come to terms with his new life. The title of the film refers to the “pushing hands” training that is part of the grandfather’s tai chi routine. “Pushing hands” is a two-person exercise which teaches tai chi students to yield in the face of brute force. The title of the film, therefore, alludes to the process of adaptation to culture shock felt by the grandfather after moving to the United States.

XU JAN (The Wedding Banquet) (pictured)
February 20, 7:00 P.M.
This sharply observed madcap comedy, about a marriage of convenience between a gay Taiwanese American and a Chinese woman, examines the primacy of the individual within a culture that worships authority and rewards conformity.
Synopsis: Wai-tung Gao and Simon are a happy gay couple living in Manhattan. However, Wai-tung’s Taiwanese parents – who do not know he is gay – are eager to see him get married and have a child. So, at Simon’s insistence, Wai-tung decides to get married to another tenant in the building, Wei-wei, a penniless artist from mainland China in need of a green card. Besides helping Wei-wei, Simon and Wai-tung hope this ruse will placate Wai-tung’s parents.
A panel discussion will be held after the screening.

YIN SHI NAN NU (Eat Drink Man Woman)
February 21, 7:00 P.M.
A remarkably assured comedy-drama of domestic life in Taiwan.
Synopsis: Every Sunday, venerable chef Chu (Sihung Lung) prepares an elaborate dinner for his three lovely daughters. Despite Chu's exotic dishes, the family barely nibbles at the food. The listless mealtime ritual mirrors the foursome's general lack of appetite for life: Chu has lost his sense of taste, and his daughters just want to go on with their separate, lonely lives. But something new is cooking that is about to spice up everyone's existence, and three marriages and a funeral later, the Chu family will learn to embrace life's unpredictabilty. The third and final film in director Ang Lee's Father Knows Best trilogy, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN is laugh-out-loud funny in its depiction of the foibles of the contemporary Taiwanese family. Whenever one of the characters utters "I have an announcement," be prepared for ensuing hilarity. The film also movingly captures the complexities of modern life, the inevitability of change, and the necessity for Zen-like balance. Lee himself seems to have absorbed the film's central message.
After this film, he began to take on a variety of projects, boldly covering vastly different subjects such as 18th-century England, the New Age 1970s, and the Civil War.
The Ang Lee Retrospective is free and open to the public thanks to our sponsor, The Taiwan Economic & Cultural Office in Houston, with special thanks to Mr. T.K. Lee.

11. Lame jokes are lame

A guy gets shipwrecked. When he wakes up, he's on a beach. The sand is dark red. He can't believe it. The sky is dark red. He walks around a bit and sees that there is dark red grass, dark red birds and dark red fruit on the dark red trees. He's shocked when he finds that his skin is starting to turn dark red too.

"Oh no!!" he says, "I think I've been marooned!!"

3. Get your Scottish Country Dancing on

I am trying to start an informal Scottish Country Dancing group. As a way to get started and gather interested people, the Houston chapter of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is holding a kickoff event on 6:00 Saturday evening, Feb. 6, in the Wiess commons. There will be food. No experience whatsoever is required.

What? Scottish country dancing, and pizza.
When? 6:00 PM on February 6.
Where? Wiess commons

From the Houston RSCDS:

Scottish Country Dancing is a traditional dance form which evolved in the 1700’s and is inextricably connected with its stirring and lively music. It combines the elegance and courtesy of the “Country Dance” with the energy and precision of step from Scotland’s older “Strathpeys and Reels”. Simple or complex these dances are non-competitive, danced for pure pleasure and enjoyment to lively and traditional Scottish music.

The Houston & District Branch is part of the living tradition of Royal Scottish Country Dance groups all over the world. We have been dancing in Houston for over 30 years, offering classes, parties, workshops and annual Balls. We are delighted to share with you the lively, traditional Scottish music, intricate patterns, and FUN! of Scottish Country Dancing.

10. Suicide Prevention:  QPR Training

QPR Gatekeeper Training: Ask A Question, Save A Life
Research suggests early detection of mental health results in increased prognosis for recovery and early intervention can be critical. The Rice Counseling Center Team believes that early detection of mental health issues is an important component of their work and that a student who wants or needs help should not be left to struggle on their own. Therefore, The Rice Counseling Center now offers "Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR)" a nationally-recognized suicide prevention program.
Much like CPR, QPR is designed as an easy to learn intervention and can be applied by anyone, including people outside of mental health professions.  QPR is a behavioral intervention that focuses on helping a distressed student access appropriate professional help. It is intended to teach front-line individuals or “gatekeepers” (e.g. Masters, resident advisors, college coordinators, academic advisors, students, faculty, and staff) on how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, including verbal, behavioral, and situational clues. QPR provides clear direction for how to: Question a person about suicidal thoughts, Persuade them to get help, and Refer the person for help.
Presented by a certified QPR instructor, each 60-minute QPR gatekeeper training includes information on:
·         The problem of suicide nationally and locally
·         Common myths and facts associated with suicide
·         Warning signs of suicide
·         Tips for asking the suicide question
·         Methods for persuading suicidal individuals to get help
·         Ways of referring at risk people to local resources
·         AND time for Questions and Answers
Each participant will receive a QPR booklet and card with information on suicide prevention and important crisis contact resources.
Location: Lovett Hall Conference Room, Lovett Hall Entrance B, (on the first floor)

Have you, a family member, friend or loved one been affected by sexual violence? We urge you to lend your voice to Take Back The Night, an annual event that seeks to eradicate sexual violence in all forms and make the night safe for women again.
The event will occur at 8pm on Thursday February 4th of Stop Violence Against Women Week, hosted by Amnesty International and Rice Women's Resource Center. Participants will march around Rice University in solidarity for a violence-free world. The march will culminate in a candlelight vigil, in which survivors and their friends will share testimonials of their trials, hopes, and healing.
If you would like to submit a testimonial, we encourage you to slip it in the envelope on the Rice Women's Resource Center door in the Kelley Lounge of the RMC, or to email it to rnp1@rice.edu. Testimonials can remain anonymous and be read by anyone.
We also encourage you to stop by the RMC Wednesday through Friday of next week to create a T-shirt for the Clothesline Project, to be displayed at Rice during Stop Violence Against Women Week. The shirts are a unique way to tell the story about how violence against women has affected your life.

"Le Dîner de Cons"
Saturday Jan 30th, 2010
Keck Hall 100 at 6pm
RSVP preferred but not required: jv1@rice.edu

The Dinner Game (French: Le dîner de cons, The Idiot's Dinner ) is a 1998 French black comedy film written and directed by Francis Veber. It is a cinema adaptation of the theatrical play of the same name, also written by Veber.

Pierre Brochant (Thierry Lhermitte), a Parisian publisher, attends a weekly "idiots' dinner", where guests, who are prominent Parisian businessmen, must bring along an "idiot" of whom the other guests can make fun. At the end of the dinner, the evening's champion idiot is selected.
With the help of an "idiot scout", Pierre Brochant manages to find a "gem", François Pignon, a Finance Ministry employee whose passion is building replicas of landmarks with matchsticks. When Brochant starts to suffer from bad back, his wife, Christine, leaves him shortly before Pignon arrives at his apartment. When Pignon arrives, he tries to help Brochant by calling many people and, through Pignon's antics, Brochant breaks up with his mistress, Marlene Sasseur. He is also able to make amends with an old friend, Juste LeBlanc, from whom he stole Christine. Eventually, when attempting to call Pascal Meneaux, a known sex addict, to whom Christine had threatened to go, he brings in his friend, a tax auditor, to find Meneaux's phone number. Because Brochant is very rich and has evaded taxes himself, he is forced to hide most of his valuables. In the act of calling Meneaux, the tax auditor makes an unpleasant discovery about his own wife and makes plans to audit Brochant for tax evasion after discovering his hidden valuables.
Pignon eventually discovers the truth behind the dinner that Brochant wanted to take him to and tries to make up for all his wrongdoings by calling Brochant's wife, who had been involved in a car accident after leaving the apartment for the second time (the first time being when Pignon had sent her away thinking she was really Brochant's mistress), and makes no mistakes in this conversation, as well as making up almost perfect excuses on the spot and with no prompting. After encouraging Brochant's wive to return home, Pignon makes yet another mistake after he picks up the telephone when she calls to talk to Brochant despite having previously told her he was in a phone box. 8. President's Office Hours TODAY from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

This is a reminder that President Leebron will hold office hours on
Wednesday, January 27, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm in his office on the 4th
Floor of Allen Center. No appointments are necessary. This is a way for
students to convey concerns, ask questions, or just engage President Leebron
in conversation.

The office hours will be conducted with an "open door" approach, allowing as
many students to come as will fit in the president's office. Thus, it is
not the appropriate forum for private, individual problems that are
appropriately handled in the first instance by other university officials.

The link to the office hour schedule is:
