3. Rice Fitness Survey - We need your input!
With only 7 months until the new recreation and wellness center opens, Rice Fitness is excitedly planning the most comprehensive programming to suit your passions. That being said, we need your help. We have created an online survey online that takes less than 5 minutes, but that will provide us invaluable information regarding your thoughts and desires for group fitness, personal training and specialty and orientation programs in the future. In these high stress times, physical activity is an important component to maintaining a healthy balance and we want to make it accessible to everyone.

Your input is critical to us for developing a good program, so let your voice be heard. Tell us about your favorite class format, what times you want classes, what we should keep and what you've seen work elsewhere. We will work to accommodate you as we are able.

4. Conversation Partner Program
Rice University’s Intensive English Program, offered through the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, is recruiting Conversation Partners. We have approximately 196 students from over 30 different countries in our English as a Second Language Program, all of whom are looking to meet native English speakers.

Our Conversation Partner Program is not a tutoring program. The main goal is our students to be able to practice English in an informal setting. The time commitment required may be as little as an hour a week. We will match you up with one of our students. Where and when you meet will be decided by you and your partner. No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.

Current session dates: January 12 – March 2.

If you are interested, please respond to fl@rice.edu by February 3, 2009.

---------------------------------------------
5. Revised Crime Alert
On Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at approximately 10:57 PM a woman reported being physically assaulted in the Humanities Building. She encountered the male suspect sleeping on a table in Room 327. The suspect is dangerous and still at large.

The suspect is described as a male, white, about 25-28 years of age, 5'6"-5'7" tall with light brown hair and eyes. He had three pre-existing red scratches on the right side of his face. At the time of the attack he was wearing a black jacket and black gloves.

A police investigation is continuing. If you have information about this or any other suspicious person or activity on campus, please contact the University Police Department at (713) 348-6000 or by using any blue light emergency phone.

The New Consensus:
How Scientists and Government Created
New Embryo Legislation in the United Kingdom

9:30 am Presentation

James A. Baker III Hall
Rice University

During the past three years, U.K. scientists fought a successful battle to allow for the creation of animal–human hybrid embryos to generate cloned human embryonic stem cell lines. The U.K. scientific community together then, with patient organizations, disease-specific charities, major funding bodies and research organizations, worked intensely with the government and the U.K. Department of Health to enact groundbreaking legislation that led to the successful passage of the new Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act of 2008. Minger will outline the major factors which led to this unique partnership, describe some of the key events which transpired during the debate in Parliament, and highlight some of the remaining contentious issues which loom on the regulatory horizon.

RSVP by fax to 713.348.5993, by e-mail to bipprsvp@rice.edu or

before Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

About the Event
The cost of the multiple government bailouts and other economic measures to combat the current financial crisis is well over $3 trillion and increasing rapidly. This figure, however, pales in comparison to the funds needed to bail out the U.S. government. In fiscal year 2008, the government’s annual budget deficit totaled $455 billion,
with that figure projected to potentially increase to over $1 trillion in 2009. The total national debt stands at $10.8 trillion as of Sept. 30, 2008, while the government’s total fiscal exposure, which includes explicit liabilities the government is legally obligated to fulfill, is more than $53 trillion. Continuing on the path of fiscal irresponsibility is no longer viable and could have dramatic consequences in the next 20 years if actions are not taken to balance the federal budget. Strong and principled leadership is needed to correct the United States’ structural budget problems, which threaten to significantly reduce the welfare of future generations.

The Concord Coalition believes that an engaged, informed and involved public is key to resolving the nation’s fiscal challenges. The Fiscal Wake-Up Tour’s mission is to cut through partisan rhetoric and stimulate a more realistic public dialogue about our nation’s fiscal future and what the costs might be. Our elected leaders in Washington, D.C., know there is a problem, but they are unlikely to act unless forced to by their constituents. The tour began as a series of public forums around the country and now includes in-depth local committees to further focus attention on our nation’s daunting long-term fiscal challenges.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

99 Using the Web to Conduct, Manage and Disseminate Research

Friday, Feb. 6, 3-4:30 p.m.
Digital Media Center, 129 Herring Hall

There’s more to doing research on the web than typing a few keywords into Google. As the Web has evolved, it has become a more powerful platform for finding and organizing information, sharing knowledge, and presenting ideas in an interactive, dynamic way. By using free Web 2.0 tools and resources such as those cataloged at Digital Research Tools (http://digitalresearchtools.pbwiki.com/), researchers can conduct, manage and disseminate research more effectively. This workshop will provide an overview to some of the most compelling Web 2.0 applications particularly relevant for researchers, such as:

* Constructing effective searches
* Keeping up-to-date with research using RSS feeds
* Managing and sharing citations using del.icio.us
* Creating bibliographies using Zotero
* Disseminating research using blogs and digital repositories
* Visualizing data using online tools such as ManyEyes

100 Research, not re-search: Using Zotero, the Next Generation Research Tool

Session II, Monday, Feb. 9, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Managing citations can be a real pain—you have to either type or copy and paste bibliographic information, keep up with the source of each quotation, and worry about formatting your bibliography properly. Enter Zotero (http://www.zotero.org), which bills itself as “a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives right where you do your work — in the web browser itself.” With Zotero, a tool designed by scholars for scholars, you can automatically download citation information, store PDFs of articles, add keywords to make your sources easy to find, search your research collections, and automatically create bibliographies and footnotes as you write. Zotero's simplicity and power have earned it praise from Inside Higher Education and PC Magazine, as well as countless enthusiastic researchers. This hands-on workshop will introduce some of the key functions of Zotero. By investing a couple of hours to learn Zotero, you can save yourself from spending countless hours trying to remember where you put that article and doing data entry and formatting.

This workshop is limited to the first 7 registrants.

102 Video Editing with FinalCut Pro - Intro
