2. Call for Take Back the Night testimonials

Have you, a family member, friend or loved one been affected by sexual violence? We urge you to lend your voice to Take Back The Night, an annual event that seeks to eradicate sexual violence in all forms and make the night safe for women again.
The event will occur at 8pm on Thursday February 4th of Stop Violence Against Women Week, hosted by Amnesty International and Rice Women's Resource Center. Participants will march around Rice University in solidarity for a violence-free world. The march will culminate in a candlelight vigil, in which survivors and their friends will share testimonials of their trials, hopes, and healing.
If you would like to submit a testimonial, we encourage you to slip it in the envelope on the Rice Women's Resource Center door in the Kelley Lounge of the RMC, or to email it to rnp1@rice.edu. Testimonials can remain anonymous and be read by anyone.
We also encourage you to stop by the RMC Wednesday through Friday of next week to create a T-shirt for the Clothesline Project, to be displayed at Rice during Stop Violence Against Women Week. The shirts are a unique way to tell the story about how violence against women has affected your life.
Both Take Back The Night and the Clothesline Project illuminate the shroud of darkness surrounding victims, celebrates survivors' strength and endeavor to abolish sexual violence for all. We urge you to lend your support. Take a stand to shatter the silence and stop the violence.

"Le Dîner de Cons"
Saturday Jan 30th, 2010
Keck Hall 100 at 6pm
RSVP preferred but not required: jv1@rice.edu

The Dinner Game (French: Le dîner de cons, The Idiot's Dinner ) is a 1998 French black comedy film written and directed by Francis Veber. It is a cinema adaptation of the theatrical play of the same name, also written by Veber.

Pierre Brochant (Thierry Lhermitte), a Parisian publisher, attends a weekly "idiots' dinner", where guests, who are prominent Parisian businessmen, must bring along an "idiot" of whom the other guests can make fun. At the end of the dinner, the evening's champion idiot is selected.
With the help of an "idiot scout", Pierre Brochant manages to find a "gem", François Pignon, a Finance Ministry employee whose passion is building replicas of landmarks with matchsticks. When Brochant starts to suffer from bad back, his wife, Christine, leaves him shortly before Pignon arrives at his apartment. When Pignon arrives, he tries to help Brochant by calling many people and, through Pignon's antics, Brochant breaks up with his mistress, Marlene Sasseur. He is also able to make amends with an old friend, Juste LeBlanc, from whom he stole Christine. Eventually, when attempting to call Pascal Meneaux, a known sex addict, to whom Christine had threatened to go, he brings in his friend, a tax auditor, to find Meneaux's phone number. Because Brochant is very rich and has evaded taxes himself, he is forced to hide most of his valuables. In the act of calling Meneaux, the tax auditor makes an unpleasant discovery about his own wife and makes plans to audit Brochant for tax evasion after discovering his hidden valuables.
Pignon eventually discovers the truth behind the dinner that Brochant wanted to take him to and tries to make up for all his wrongdoings by calling Brochant's wife, who had been involved in a car accident after leaving the apartment for the second time (the first time being when Pignon had sent her away thinking she was really Brochant's mistress), and makes no mistakes in this conversation, as well as making up almost perfect excuses on the spot and with no prompting. After encouraging Brochant's wive to return home, Pignon makes yet another mistake after he picks up the telephone when she calls to talk to Brochant despite having previously told her he was in a phone box. 8. President's Office Hours TODAY from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

This is a reminder that President Leebron will hold office hours on
Wednesday, January 27, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm in his office on the 4th
Floor of Allen Center. No appointments are necessary. This is a way for
students to convey concerns, ask questions, or just engage President Leebron
in conversation.

The office hours will be conducted with an "open door" approach, allowing as
many students to come as will fit in the president's office. Thus, it is
not the appropriate forum for private, individual problems that are
appropriately handled in the first instance by other university officials.

8. Nirvana in the New Year

The Nirvana Sessions will resume next week and we look forward to seeing each of you in
attendance. We will continue to offer three sessions each week (see below), providing
guided imagery exercises (via audio CDs) on Tuesdays/Thursdays and the mindfulness
practice on Wednesdays with Micki Fine. All sessions will be in the Rice Memorial Chapel.

The Club Nirvana incentive program was a definite success this fall and I am excited to
continue offering these benefits to members going forward. If you would like to join,
please go online and register - http://wellness.rice.edu/nirvana.html and then pay your
$15 at your earliest convenience. You can do this at either a Nirvana Session or in the
Wellness Center. Only students are eligible for the incentive program.

I thought I would share a few key findings from the fall evaluation for your reference:

Those individuals who participated in 4 or more Nirvana Sessions saw a greater benefit
than those who attended only a few sessions. This may indicate that a certain "dosage"
is needed, not only to receive the relaxation/refocusing benefits of meditation, but also
to develop better coping skills in daily situations.

82% of respondents who attended 10+ sessions reported that they felt "very confident"
about practicing meditation to manage daily stress.

Participants said:
"It helped me calm down before a test as well as let my mind not focus on
studying/preoccupations."
"I have definitely been aware of times when I was stressed out and needed to take a few
minutes breathe. I used some of the strategies I learned in the Nirvana Sessions to
refocus my thoughts."
"It has definitely provided me with the tools to reel in my wandering mind, which is very
helpful when studying and writing papers."

Annually, two dance concerts were presented with original choreography by faculty, students, and guest choreographers from the Houston community. Since 1982, the structure has remained fairly consistent with an average of 25 members."

Please meet us in the Sid Commons for the start of auditions; we'll head down to the stage in the Sid Big Room from there.

Featuring the music of:

Pink Floyd :: The Velvet Underground :: The Rolling Stones :: The Cure :: The Doors :: The Grateful Dead :: John Lennon :: The Beatles :: The Who :: U2 ::
The Plastic People of the Universe :: Guns and Roses :: The Beach Boys :: Bob Dylan :: Jimi Hendrix :: Vera Lynn

"Stoppard’s play glorifies rock and roll as it flourishes during the democratic movement in Eastern Bloc Czechoslovakia between the Prague Spring of 1968 and the Velvet Revolution of 1989. Taking place in Cambridge, England and in Prague, the play contrasts the attitudes of a young Czech PhD student and rock music fan who becomes appalled by the repressive regime in his home county with those of his British Marxist professor who unrepentantly continues to believe Soviet ideal.
The play takes place over several decades from the late 1960s until 1990, ending with a concert given by The Rolling Stones that year in Prague. Recurrent references are made to a glimpse by one of the main characters of the youn Syd Barrett (founding member of Pink Floyd) performing “Golden Hair.” Barrett’s physical and mental decline also plays a role in the drama (Barrett in fact died during the play’s original run in London). The underground Czech group The Plastic People of the Universe are held up by another character as an ideal of resistance to Communism. The poetry of Sappho is another recurrent motif; its pagan sensuality is implicitly compared with the anarchic erotic force of rock music."

5. COMP 381/CHBE 381 - ICT DESIGNS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD

Our society has been witnessing phenomenal growth in all sectors over the past few decades which has been largely spurred by Information and Com-munication Technologies (ICT). However, the relentless march of technology driving economic benefits is being achieved at an ever increasing societal cost with an increasing potential negative impact on the environment. Hence, one of the important challenges facing modern society is Sustainability.
With this viewpoint, this course will offer several design projects based on ICT at the nexus of Engineering, Sciences and Medicine, aimed at providing sustainable solutions for a better society. Students will be expected to work in groups of 2-4. Multidisciplinary projects will be encouraged, and extensive use will be made of the Oshman Engineerng Design Kitchen.
As a design example, a project that will be considered is the I-Slate, viewed as one of the “emerging technologies with a potential to change the world” by the premier association for technology, IEEE, at its 125th anniversary. This Rice-based project (http://www.cs.rice.edu/~kvp1/islate.htm) which also spans research groups at Caltech, IIIT-H (India), NTU (Singapore) and CSEM (Switzerland) uses technology for developing ultra low-energy and low-cost educational devices. To elaborate, some of the sample projects are:

· Design of low-cost, low-energy education devices

· ICT and virtual hospitals

· Sustainable hearing aids

· ICT design using principles of neuroscience

· Metrics for Sustainability in ICT

Highlight: Students will prepare a final report and present their findings to a panel of judges who will choose two of the projects as winners. The students par-ticipating in these projects will be offered internships during the Summer term of 2010. As an example, if a team working on the I-Slate project is chosen, the winning team would be working with our partners in India, Singapore and Swit-zerland as a part of this internship.

No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.
