The "WBTHFH" Funpage

Hey Hanszen!

For those of you new to these parts, congratulations! You're in the best college at Rice. And for all your announcement and current goings-on needs, your Hanszen secretaries will be sending out “funpages” every week or so to keep you updated on the various opportunities around Rice in which you can get involved (and further exert Hanszen's utter dominance over the other 9 colleges).

And for those of you who aren't so new, welcome back! You've been heartily missed. Now let's get ready to rock this semester extra hard in every way imaginable.

2. Guys and Dolls auditions

This semester, Brown College Theater is performing the classic musical
GUYS AND DOLLS, and we want everyone to come out and audition for a
part in this amazing show!

Auditions are August 26, 27, and 28 (Wednesday through Friday of the
first week of classes) at 7:00 p.m. in the Brown Commons. Bring
clothes/shoes to dance in; bring a song to sing (any song of your
choosing). Call-backs if necessary will be either Saturday or Sunday
of that week. Everyone is welcome to try out!!!

Show dates are November 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14 at 8:00 p.m. Make sure
that you are available for all of these dates before you audition.
Also note that the weekend of November 13 and 14 is homecoming
weekend.

We've been planning this show since April, and we're dead positive
that this is going to be the most fun and exciting show to be involved
with and the most entertaining show to see this year.

Email Mike Clendenen (mpc2@rice.edu) with questions. Also, find our
event "Auditions for GUYS AND DOLLS" on Facebook.

3. Roommate wanted for condo

Looking for a roommate in a comfortable, safe, and inexpensive condo near Rice?

I have a room for rent in a recently renovated condo 1.4 miles from Rice University and 1.7 miles from the front door of Baylor College of Medicine. It's located on Bellefontaine, near the corner of Kirby and Holcombe, and is a three minute walk from several Q-card-eligible bus and shuttle stops, in addition to being within easy biking distance. The condo has new floors, bathroom tiles, light fixtures, curtains, dishwasher, etc., and comes mostly furnished. The complex has several excellently maintained swimming pools and gardens. Fixed monthly price of $675 includes ALL rent, electric, water, gas, cable TV, and high speed internet bills, in addition to secure covered parking and mailbox access. For more information e-mail me at dmata@alumni.rice.edu. - Douglas Mata

5. Crime Awareness Message

During this very busy week, safety and security may not have been uppermost in our minds. I am sure that we all have had plenty to occupy our thoughts; class work, jobs, friends, and family. As recently as last evening, we were all reminded of the need to be vigilant about protecting ourselves and our personal property.
Unfortunately, a vehicle burglary was reported to the University Police Department about 8:33 PM last night. That burglary resulted in the loss of a new (still in the box) computer belonging to one of our freshmen students. The computer was taken from the backseat of a secured and unoccupied vehicle while it was parked for only four minutes near the Brown Master’s House. The total loss was substantial not only to the freshman student, but to the upperclassman’s vehicle as his window was broken out to gain entry.
Please keep in mind these simply safety precautions to better safeguard your property and person:
Parking Lot Safety -
· Place valuables in the trunk or under the seats.
· Always lock your car, even if you leave it for a very few minutes.
· Have your keys in hand before you leave to go to your car.
· Have someone walk you to your car, especially at night.
· Use the escort service at any time when you feel uneasy or worried about getting to and from your college.
· Check your backseat before entering your car.
Personal Safety -
· Try to walk with friends when moving about, especially at night.
· Be alert to your surroundings and walk with confidence.
· Walk where the sidewalks are well lit and well traveled.
· Trust your gut. If you feel like someone is following you, go to a populated place where people can help you and then call police.
· Know where the campus emergency phones are located and do not hesitate to use them.
· Report anyone you see loitering around the colleges or academic buildings.
· Always lock your door and don't prop open your room doors, even if you are gone for a short time.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the University Police Department for any safety or security needs. You may do so by dialing 6000, (713) 348-6000, or by picking up any blue light or elevator phone. Off campus dial 911.
