of literature at Rice University and a voice for those who cannot speak for
themselves. The Alan Grob Prize is awarded annually to the Rice

the most devotion to the needs and interests of the economically and
culturally disadvantaged. The recipient's activities shall exemplify the

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the United States and the primary cause of serious long-term disability in Americans. In Harris County, which is located in the nation’s “stroke belt,” the stroke death rate is twice the national average. In response to this enormous public health threat, The Methodist Hospital established the five-year Taking Strides4Stroke Community Stroke Awareness Campaign. All funds raised through the campaign benefit the Methodist Neurological Institute and its community stroke outreach education initiative.

Fellow Owls, I would like to extend an invitation to you to join The Methodist Hospital’s third annual Stride4Stroke 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, March 7 at Rice Stadium. To register, visit the Stride4Stroke website; you can sign up independently or as part of a team. With your participation cost of $25, you will raise awareness of stroke, enjoy a jaunt around the outer loop, and receive a Stride4Stroke t-shirt.

I hope to see you there!

1. JOIN BEER BIKE SECURITY

We need LOTS of Hanszenites to join the Beer Bike Security Squad. Security people carry around clipboards and fine the other colleges if they break the rules (or if they even think about breaking the rules) during the parade; they're also the ones who don't get hurt by water balloons. So if you love Hanszen, if you don't want to risk bodily injury during the water balloon fight, or if you're a freshman who hasn't yet gotten two Freshman Service Points (you'll need them to have a shot at living on campus next year!),

JOIN SECURITY!

Do it for Hanszen!

3. Summer job opportunity in Houston: Urban Immersion Student Coordinator, for those of us who have nothing better to do and care about people

The Community Involvement Center's pre-orientation program, Urban Immersion (an intensive service-oriented program designed to introduce incoming Rice students (pre-freshmen) to the urban issues, social needs, and the cultural diversity of Houston) is looking for Student Coordinators!

Student Coordinators will work together as a team to shape the focus of this year’s program, plan service projects, organize meetings with community leaders and social service agencies, and explore possibilities for entertainment and dining. While the participants are in Houston, Coordinators will serve as city guides, reflection facilitators, service site coordinators, and small group leaders.

This year, Urban Immersion will again have two one-week sessions (Sunday, July 12 - Friday, July 17 and Sunday, July 26 to Friday, July 31). As a Coordinator you are able to work in one or both of the sessions. If you coordinate one session, you will be compensated with a $200 stipend. If you coordinate two weeks you will compensated with either a $600 stipend OR $750.00 credit for summer campus housing.

For more information or to apply, please visit the Community Involvement Center's website (http://cic.rice.edu). Applications are due by 5:00pm on Wednesday, February 25, 2009.

What will you do after you graduate? How should you be preparing right now for graduate studies, a career, or both? How do the skills you are gaining translate into an exciting future? Hear firsthand a former Rice student's answers to these questions and the challenges and opportunities that may await you after college.

Marie Parks earned her B.A. in English in 2008 from Rice University, where she defended her senior honors thesis, written under the direction of Dr. Caroline Levander and Dr. Scott Derrick. Marie plans to apply for graduate programs in nineteenth-century American literature.

This talk has been organized by the Humanities Research Center on behalf of its Undergraduate Fellowship Program. All Rice students are invited to attend the talk, which is part of the speaker series “Big Questions and Future Directions in the Humanities.”

In addition:
The Student Association Election Committee would like to clarify a few items regarding the current Student Association General Election.
The proposed change to Article XII of the Honor Council Constitution is Issue #7. In this week's edition of the Rice Thresher, it was listed as with the wrong issue number.

The correct numbering is as follows:

Issue #1: To Remove University Blue's Blanket Tax
Issue #2: To Increase Rice Program Council's Blanket Tax
Issue #3: To Increase Rice Program Council's Blanket Tax for Major Events
Issue #4: To Increase KTRU's Blanket Tax
Issue #5: To Establish R2: The Rice Review as a Subsidiary Organization
Issue #6: To Establish Open Magazine as a Subsidiary Organization
Issue #7: To Amend Article XII and others of the Honor Council Constitution

RPC is proposing, in Issue #2, a blanket tax increase from $13 to $21 (in addition to a Issue #3, a separate $15 major events tax). This week's
edition of the Rice Thresher had incorrect amounts in some locations. For more information about the RPC proposals, please see

14. Part-time Mother's Helper/Babysitter Position Available

Seeking a Part-Time Mother's Helper/Babysitter who is reliable, caring, energetic, nurturing and creative for after school care for our three young children Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm (twenty hours a week) in the Bellaire/Meyerland area - only ten minutes from Rice University. We would also consider hiring someone Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00pm - 7:00pm (twelve hours a week) if that is all your schedule allows. The job would entail helping me while I'm home to keep the afternoon running smoothly as well as help with the children's dinner prep and getting ready for bath and bed. Great job for a local college student who just has classes in the morning. We would consider splitting the position between two people if necessary and can be a bit flexible with the hours for the right sitter. Babysitting/Childcare experience preferred. Non-smoker, transportation, references and love of dogs required. We also may use you on occasional Saturday evenings and can give you more hours in the summer if needed.

He graduated from Yates High School in 1986. Dr. Byrd is an expert in Afro America, especially black life in the Atlantic world and the Jim Crow South. He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and a life member of the Southern Historical Association.

About the Book:
"Captives and Voyagers breaks away from the conventional image of transatlantic migration and illustrates how black men and women, enslaved and free, came to populate the edges of an Anglo-Atlantic world. By following the movement of this representative population, Captives and Voyagers provides a vitally important view of the British colonial world and its intersection with the African Diaspora."

Teams of supporters will camp out at Rice University's track stadium and celebrate life throughout the night with food, music, and activities. Relay is not a race. Teams maintain constant vigil by continually having at least one team member on the track walking, jogging, or running at all times, because the final victory over cancer won't be a sprint or a marathon, it will be a Relay! Relay for Life will be taking place on Friday-Saturday, April 17-18 at the Rice University Track/Soccer Stadium. lending support to day-to-day services, such as our two twenty-four
hour hotlines, counseling and court advocacy services for adult and
child survivors, shelter and housing support services. The magnitude
of how violence is affecting our neighborhoods is revealed in the
numbers; in 2007, the Women's Center answered 41,000 hotline calls and
offered free and confidential services to 7,000 adults and children in
our community.

3. Career Opps for Rice Students
As a graduating senior you are no doubt trying to decide what you will do next year, or even for the next 5 years. I want to let you know more about opportunities in the environmental advocacy field.

http://www.EnvironmentAmerica.org/jobs

Environment America is the federation of state-based environmental advocacy organizations, from Environment California to Environment Texas to Environment Massachusetts. This year we are hiring graduating college seniors for our fellowship program to help change the environmental direction in this country: to solve our energy problems; fight global warming; preserve our open spaces; clean up our air and water; and make an impact on many other environmental issues. Environment America gives recent graduates the opportunity to mobilize and empower Americans and work with legislators on environmental policy. We build and demonstrate support for proposals at the state and federal levels to ensure that decision makers hear from and pay attention to the public.

We will be attending the CIC's Good Works Career Fair and holding interviews on campus next week, on Thurs., 2/19 from 2pm-5pm in the RMC and all day on Fri., 2/20 in the Center for Student Professional Development, respectively. I encourage you to participate in either opportunity and get back in touch with me if you are interested at alumni@publicinterestnetwork.org.

For more information, I invite you to check out our Web site, or contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Why we do it, why we don't, and why does our parents' generation care so much?!?

Possible Questions:
What does it mean to "hook up"? What do people actually do when they "hook up"?
Has "hooking up" replaced dating? What does that mean for our futures?
Is "hooking up" a new trend? Or is it all media hype?
What does "hooking up" mean for women?

Come with questions, or opinions, or just to listen and learn!

10. Rice University Zipcar Program- A way to rent affordable cars
Rice University students and employees have a new transportation option available on campus, the use of a Toyota Prius or a Volvo S40 through
the Zipcar program.

Zipcar, a car-sharing service, is an easy way to get access to a car, whether it’s for an hour or an overnight trip. The service allows members
to reserve a car online or via a mobile device any time – day or night. Hourly and daily rates include gas, insurance and use of a car
up to 180 miles per day.

Rice applicants must be at least 18 years old to become Zipcar members. There is a one-time $35 membership fee,
and new members get a $35 driving credit.

To learn more about the Zipcar at Rice program, please visit www.zipcar.com/rice or call 866-494.

Please use your Rice University email address on your Zipcar application so we know who you are. You can always change it later.
Rice University students, faculty, and staff can join Zipcar for only $35/year. You also get $35 in free driving to use your first month!

Get 24/7 access to Zipcars parked right on campus in front of Baker College. Simply reserve online, let yourself in with your Zipcard and drive.
Our low hourly and daily rates always include gas and insurance.

You only need to be 18+ to join. Members age 18-20 can use the zipcars. Members age 21+ also have access to thousands of Zipcars
all around the world. Find cars on or around the Rice University campus.

As you may know, every Zipcar membership comes with comprehensive insurance, which covers you if you're ever in an accident in a Zipcar.
If you're ever in an at-fault accident (or an accident where no fault is assigned), you could be responsible for a $500 damage fee, which covers
the cost of repairs. Zipcar understands that $500 isn't lunch money, so they want to remind you that they offer Damage Fee Waivers to reduce,
or eliminate, the potential out-of-pocket costs associated with at fault and no-fault accidents.
This program was first introduced by Zipcar as a result of feedback from members and it has been well-received.

There are two Damage Fee Waivers available:

1, Pay $50/year to reduce your damage fee to $250

2. Pay $75/year to reduce your damage fee to $0

All Zipcar members age 21+ who haven't had any accidents in the past 12 months are eligible to purchase Damage Fee Waivers.
Waivers are completely optional, and are meant only to reduce or eliminate the potential costs associated with having an accident
in or causing damage to a Zipcar.

Waivers are valid for one year from the original date of purchase. To learn more about Damage Fee Waivers, or to purchase one,
please visit www.zipcar.com/members/add-waiver

2. Teach For America's final deadline
Disparities in educational opportunities limit the life choices of the 13 million children growing up in poverty today, impacting their earning potential, voter participation, civic engagement and community involvement. These disparities disproportionately impact African-American, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American children, who are three times as likely to live in a low-income area.* You have the power to change this.

Teach For America seeks individuals from all backgrounds, academic majors, and career interests who possess the leadership skills and experience that will enable them to change the prospects of students growing up today and, ultimately, to effect fundamental change in our society that will make it a place of opportunity for all.

As a member of Teach For America, you will commit two years to teach in one of our country’s high-need public schools and will gain the skills, perspective, and experience that will help you make an impact over the long term and pursue your personal and professional goals, regardless of your career path.

This is a challenging endeavor, but by taking advantage of the support and resources that Teach For America provides, you can have a tremendous impact on the lives of your students.
To learn more, visit www.teachforamerica.org or contact admissions@teachforamerica.org.

FINAL Application Deadline: Friday, February 13th, 2009
Full salary and benefits. All academic majors.

5. Nourish International Chapter Founders Program
This year, 8 million people will die because they are simply too poor to stay alive.

You can change this.
Nourish International is inviting you to be a part of the solution to global poverty by applying for our Chapter Founders Program.
During the school year, Nourish Chapters run small businesses called ventures on campus to raise money, membership, and awareness. They then choose a compelling student-led project proposed by an international organization. Over the summer, students travel abroad to a local community to implement their chosen project as a tangible solution to poverty.
Steve Mullaney, founder of our Minnesota Chapter, wrote about his experience in Nebaj, Guatemala, where his team partnered with the community to build a greenhouse and an education center:
I met two boys: Eliu and Jacinto. Both just started talking with me. Both are brilliant. Eliu is twelve and is very motivated. He's aware of how knowing math will positively affect his future. He told me that he wants to go to the US—not to work, but to continue his studies. Like many other Guatemalan twelve year olds I've talked with he loves soccer, is fascinated by my stories of Minnesota snow, and is incredibly motivated/talented/brilliant. He asked me to help teach him algebra; I said yes.
On his first day of doing multiplication with two digits he mastered it in five example problems. Yes, he's behind grade level, but still—that's impressive. He's a sponge whose mind is naturally geared towards excellence in math. I've never seen the level of focus and intensity in anyone learning anything. Ever.
And then [my friend] Nick hits me with a bombshell which I know [that] I know, but wasn't something I was thinking about at the time: "It's like this with kids all around the world."

Students can have a global impact and ensure that brilliant students like Eliu have a chance to succeed. If you are interested, you can do two things:
· Apply to be a Chapter Founder – Between now and February 28th Nourish is accepting applications for its Chapter Founders Program. This spring, we'll be selecting students from 10 campuses across the country to receive professional training, support and $500 start-up capital. To start your application, click here.
· Tell a friend – If Nourish isn't the right opportunity for you, you can still help accomplish our mission of eradicating global poverty. Spreading the word to just three people drastically raises our chances of finding the right student on your campus. Nominate a friend now by clicking here.
To apply, get more information or nominate a friend, go to http://www.nourishinternational.org/students/founders. Act now - applications are being reviewed as they come in!
Sincerely,
The Nourish Team
