1. JOIN BEER BIKE SECURITY

We need LOTS of Hanszenites to join the Beer Bike Security Squad. Security people carry around clipboards and fine the other colleges if they break the rules (or if they even think about breaking the rules) during the parade; they're also the ones who don't get hurt by water balloons. So if you love Hanszen, if you don't want to risk bodily injury during the water balloon fight, or if you're a freshman who hasn't yet gotten two Freshman Service Points (you'll need them to have a shot at living on campus next year!),

JOIN SECURITY!

Do it for Hanszen!

2. Rice Night at the Houston Aeros Hockey Club

Do you enjoy hockey? Then you won't want to miss Rice Night at the Houston Aeros Hockey Club on March 13 at 7:35 p.m. Anyone affiliated with Rice University can attend, including students (omg what), family, friends, alumni, and faculty. There will be discounted tickets for $8 in the upper end zone and discounted parking for $5. If you have any questions, contact Amber Williams

3. Summer job opportunity in Houston: Urban Immersion Student Coordinator, for those of us who have nothing better to do and care about people

The Community Involvement Center's pre-orientation program, Urban Immersion (an intensive service-oriented program designed to introduce incoming Rice students (pre-freshmen) to the urban issues, social needs, and the cultural diversity of Houston) is looking for Student Coordinators!

Student Coordinators will work together as a team to shape the focus of this year’s program, plan service projects, organize meetings with community leaders and social service agencies, and explore possibilities for entertainment and dining. While the participants are in Houston, Coordinators will serve as city guides, reflection facilitators, service site coordinators, and small group leaders.

This year, Urban Immersion will again have two one-week sessions (Sunday, July 12 - Friday, July 17 and Sunday, July 26 to Friday, July 31). As a Coordinator you are able to work in one or both of the sessions. If you coordinate one session, you will be compensated with a $200 stipend. If you coordinate two weeks you will compensated with either a $600 stipend OR $750.00 credit for summer campus housing.

For more information or to apply, please visit the Community Involvement Center's website (http://cic.rice.edu). Applications are due by 5:00pm on Wednesday, February 25, 2009.

If you have any questions, please contact Christa Leimbach by phone (713-348-6044) or e-mail (leimbach@rice.edu).

4. Writing in the Workforce
Marie Parks, Development Writer, Methodist Hospital Foundation

February 26, 2009, 7:00pm
Herring Hall 126

What will you do after you graduate? How should you be preparing right now for graduate studies, a career, or both? How do the skills you are gaining translate into an exciting future? Hear firsthand a former Rice student's answers to these questions and the challenges and opportunities that may await you after college.

Marie Parks earned her B.A. in English in 2008 from Rice University, where she defended her senior honors thesis, written under the direction of Dr. Caroline Levander and Dr. Scott Derrick. Marie plans to apply for graduate programs in nineteenth-century American literature.

This talk has been organized by the Humanities Research Center on behalf of its Undergraduate Fellowship Program. All Rice students are invited to attend the talk, which is part of the speaker series “Big Questions and Future Directions in the Humanities.”

SA.RICE.EDU
VOTE! GET STICKERED!

If you would like an "I Voted!" sticker before we distribute them to the colleges, please contact Director of Elections Timothy Faust.
In addition:
The Student Association Election Committee would like to clarify a few items regarding the current Student Association General Election.
The proposed change to Article XII of the Honor Council Constitution is Issue #7. In this week's edition of the Rice Thresher, it was listed as with the wrong issue number.

The correct numbering is as follows:

Issue #1: To Remove University Blue's Blanket Tax
Issue #2: To Increase Rice Program Council's Blanket Tax
Issue #3: To Increase Rice Program Council's Blanket Tax for Major Events
Issue #4: To Increase KTRU's Blanket Tax
Issue #5: To Establish R2: The Rice Review as a Subsidiary Organization
Issue #6: To Establish Open Magazine as a Subsidiary Organization
Issue #7: To Amend Article XII and others of the Honor Council Constitution

RPC is proposing, in Issue #2, a blanket tax increase from $13 to $21 (in addition to a Issue #3, a separate $15 major events tax). This week's
edition of the Rice Thresher had incorrect amounts in some locations. For more information about the RPC proposals, please see

Thursday, February 26, from 7:00 PM until midnight is your second chance to GUARANTEE you're in the 2009 Campanile Yearbook!

That evening, the Campanile Yearbook Staff will host its Spring Picture Yourself event in the Grand Hall of the RMC.

If you looked through the 08 Campanile and were sad because you didn't see yourself in the book, here's your opportunity to make up for it.

This is your picture, and you get to do what YOU want: go solo, come in a group, make it serious or make it fun, be yourself, wear a costume, wear a hat, or wear no clothes at all!

Clubs and student orgs, this is also an opportunity to have your club picture taken for the yearbook. Round up your club's members and head for the RMC Thursday night. This is the perfect opportunity to make sure your club / student organization gets due representation in the Campanile.

There will be plenty of space in the Grand Hall for people to wait, change clothes, get organized, etc.

Copies of the 2008 Campanile will also be available for pickup. Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors who attended Rice during the 2007 - 2008 school year: your yearbook is FREE, so if you didn't get one in the fall, come pick it up and take it home before you leave for Spring Break.

14. Part-time Mother's Helper/Babysitter Position Available

Seeking a Part-Time Mother's Helper/Babysitter who is reliable, caring, energetic, nurturing and creative for after school care for our three young children Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm (twenty hours a week) in the Bellaire/Meyerland area - only ten minutes from Rice University. We would also consider hiring someone Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00pm - 7:00pm (twelve hours a week) if that is all your schedule allows. The job would entail helping me while I'm home to keep the afternoon running smoothly as well as help with the children's dinner prep and getting ready for bath and bed. Great job for a local college student who just has classes in the morning. We would consider splitting the position between two people if necessary and can be a bit flexible with the hours for the right sitter. Babysitting/Childcare experience preferred. Non-smoker, transportation, references and love of dogs required. We also may use you on occasional Saturday evenings and can give you more hours in the summer if needed.

This position is available immediately. Please contact me for more information at 713-589-9503 or RLHerschy@gmail.com.

15. Conversation with Idil Biret (Pianist)

Hope to see you there,

16.Sports Volunteer Opportunity

Are you looking for a fun volunteer opportunity involving sports? The University of Houston and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority are hosting the 2009 NCAA Division II Winter Sports Festival March 10-14, where champions will be crowned in women's and men's swimming and diving, women's and men's indoor track and field, and men's wrestling. It's a fun volunteer job because there are lots of different jobs available and you get to watch championship sports! Plus, volunteers get a T-shirt and if you work two four-hour shifts (they don't need to be continuous), you'll get TWO FREE TICKETS in a suite for an Astros game this season.

We are in the most need for volunteers who can work shifts in the morning, but we do have spots still available in the afternoon or evening as well. We ONLY NEED VOLUNTEERS FROM WEDNESDAY MARCH 11 - SATURDAY MARCH 14. All of the shifts before that are filled. If you know someone else who might be available, please forward this to them! Either click the link below to register as a volunteer, or e-mail Meghan Hall at mmh1@rice.edu if you have any questions.

Thanks!
