1. Wyrd Sisters Auditions -- ROUND 2
The Rice Players production of Stephen Briggs and Terry Pratchett's "Wyrd Sisters" needs male actors!

We'll be holding an additional round of audition specifically to fill male
roles this coming Monday.

Monday, December 8, 2009
1:00 PM
Hamman Hall Studio.
No preparation is required.

Women welcome, but we are primarily looking to fill male roles.

Please contact Christopher Warrington or Tommy Mings for more information. Performance dates are February 6,7, and 12--14. This production directed by Tommy Mings.

Wyrd Sisters is a Monty Python-esque comedy about Macbeth's three witches. There is a wicked duke and duchess, a ghost of a murdered king, dim soldiers, strolling players, and a land in peril. But it is three witches, who view magic in the most practical way possible, who stand between the kingdom and destruction.
---------------------------------------------
2. The Tempest Auditions and Tech
Bakershake's 40th Production, The Tempest, will be having auditions on Monday December 8 from 7-10 in the Baker Library (off the end of the Baker Commons). Auditions are workshop style so plan to come the whole time if you can. The director is Baker Associate and longtime Bakershaker Chepe Lockett. There are many parts great and small, and dancers are particularly welcomed for the parts of the Spirits, though certainly not a requirement.

We also need tech people, so if you have any interest, please let our producers Isabel Kuri ik1@rice.edu, and Meg Goswami meg.goswami@rice.edu know! If you don't want a full position, a lot of our tech spots are filled by soon-to-be-graduating upperclassmen who need to train a replacement. It would be a great time to get involved.

So get excited! Shakespeare on Monday!

---------------------------------------------
3. Bill of Rights "Pot Luck" Dinner: Sat., Dec. 13th, 6:00 pm, Farnsworth
Saturday, Dec. 13th, 6:00 PM

Jacob spent months in jail in 1985 for resisting draft registration, he was responsible for many states passing term limits over the past few decades, and last year he was indicted in Oklahoma in 2007 for petitioning the government (http://www.freepauljacob.com)

Dinner:
Please bring a dish if you can, but if not, please join anyways us for a great dinner, debate, and talk. The debate probably will not start until around 6:30, so stop by then if you can't make it earlier.

1. Catalyst Submission
The Catalyst: Rice Undergraduate Science & Engineering Review is currently accepting submissions for our annual 2008-2009 issue! We are in our second year of publication and are eager to continue our role in fostering scientific interest and discussion at Rice. This journal is a great way to be heard throughout campus and in the greater scientific community. We distribute issues on the Rice campus as well as the Texas Medical Center, and collaborations are underway to publish articles on Connexions, a platform that will allow your work to be accessible on a global scale.

If you are interested in writing a research review article, the deadline for abstract submissions is Dec 4.
If you are interested in writing a popular science article, then please contact Lisa Sun (ls5@rice.edu ) with your topic. The deadline for popular science article submissions is January 9, 2009.

Please visit catalyst.rice.edu/submissions for more information on submissions, or contact catalystRUSER@gmail.com with any questions.

---------------------------------------------
2. Seeking Crew for Wyrd Sisters!
Hopefully you've heard by now about our spring production, Wyrd Sisters. It's an awesome comedy, and it's got a quick schedule (done in a month). Anyway, we're looking to fill a few more positions in the play. We need an assistant stage manager, a props master, a producer, a sound designer, and a marketing director. We're looking for energetic, reliable people, with or without theater experience. Contact Catherine Bratic (ceb1@rice.edu) for more information about any of these roles. Thanks!
---------------------------------------------
3. Holiday Gift Drive
can be a difficult time for many of the Houston Area Women's Center's (HAWC) clients because they are away from their homes and/or are living in the shelter. HAWC has a Holiday Store full of donations from their Holiday Wish List (attached). The Holiday Store gives HAWC's clients the opportunity to shop for gifts free of charge. This ensures that children at the shelter will have a gift waiting for them under the tree and that clients can give their loved ones new gifts without having to undergo the extra financial burden.

There will be a collection box outside of the Rice Women's Resource Center, which is in the Kelley Lounge in the RMC. Donations should be new, from the wish list attached (and below), and NOT wrapped. We'll be collecting donations until December 7th.

If you have any questions, please contact me at Nikka.T.Landau@rice.edu.

---------------------------------------------
4. Talent needed for President's Study Break Sunday, Dec 7 9 - 10 pm
Hi talented Rice people,

I'm working on the entertainment for the President's study break on
December 7th. Each year, we present a "variety show" of all the creative
students and groups we have here at Rice.

I'd like to feature several acts during this show -- each group will do a tune or two. All I need is 5-10 minutes. Each group will perform in the Grand Hall of the student center. We will provide the sound system, you provide the instruments and individual amps/etc.

If you are interested, let me know ASAP and I'll get you onto the list. If you know of any other student bands or talented individuals who you think will be interested, would you please forward this invitation to them? Have them contact me at cthrock@rice.edu.

---------------------------------------------
5. Library Books
To all undergraduate students:

Please remember to return your library materials before you leave campus
following final exams. You may use your library PIN to check for books
charged to your account, due dates, fines, recalls, and to renew books
online at:
http://alexandria.rice.edu/uhtbin/cgisirsi/X/FONDREN/X/1/1166/X/BLASTOFF
Note that there is a new link to send your library PIN to your Rice email
account if you have forgotten your PIN.

If you use the online renewal feature, please verify that the books listed
on your account are in your possession.

The last due date for the fall semester is 12/17/2008, so books
due before that date may be renewed online now. Fines for overdue
materials will accrue during the holidays, even on days the library is
closed. Beginning Friday, 12/12/2007, you may borrow books for a 28-day
loan period or renew books for another 28 days.

The online renewal feature will not work for the following:
- if you have fines over $5
- if you have any overdue materials or wait until after the due date
- if there is a hold or recall on any item (these will need to be
returned to the library)
- if any items have reached the renewal limit (10 renewals per item)
After renewing, check your account to verify the change in due dates.

If you have any questions about your library account, contact the
Circulation Department staff at 713-348-4021 or email circ@rice.edu.

Or talk to Eileen Ong, she works there.

14. New Soci Courses Added
Rice students --

I know registration for Spring 2009 just ended, but we've had a late addition to the spring offerings for sociology:

Sociology 360: Sociology of Culture. MWF 11-11:50am. The class will be taught by Dr. Suzanna Crage, a visiting
professor who will be teaching in the department this year, and probably next year as well.

The course informaton has been submitted to the registrar, and students can add the course at any time. Dr. Crage
doesn't have office space with us yet, so I can sign any Add forms on her behalf if you'd like to add this course now,
rather than waiting until spring semester, if you'd like.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

9. Rice Bike Project: Your Help Is Needed!
We are students currently enrolled in ENST 302: Environmental Issues: Rice Into the Future. One of the requirements of this course is to propose a project that will have a positive effect on the environment at Rice. Our group has proposed creating a bike share program on campus. Through this program, students would have access to a group of loaner bikes available at each of their colleges. The goal of this is to encourage the use of a more sustainable means of transportation, while participating in a fun and healthy activity. As part of this project, we would like to assess student interest of such a program through a quick and easy online survey. It's only ten questions long, and should not take more than five minutes to complete. We would really, really appreciate your participation! If you are interested in seeing such a program at Rice (and even if you're not), please let us know through this survey. If you have any questions, just shoot us an e-mail. Thank you!!

1. Will Rice Courses
WILL 103 Delving into the Human Condition in Science Fiction

The genre of science fiction literature covers a vast majority of subjects, including alien invasion and euthanasia. However, a large portion of science fiction works focus on one theme: the nature of the human soul. The purpose of this course is to analyze the relationship between the human soul and the external environment. Instructors: Katelyn Willis & Will Fischer

WILL 104 Science of Interpersonal Relationships

There is perhaps no topic more important to humanity than that of human relationships. This course will expose students to a scientific viewpoint of interpersonal relationships, with a special focus on the activities involved in, and the mental processes underlying, dyadic relationships. Instructor: Michael Rog

WILL 105 Presidential Assassination Attempts and Successes

This course will discuss the various assassins who have written themselves into American history. As opposed to approaching the subject objectively, we will attempt to understand the personal issues, emotions and motives of each assassin. We will cover the four successful presidential assassinations and the several attempts, societal reaction, punishment and aftermath. We will also discuss contemporary assassins and the challenges they face. Instructor: Amara DiFrancesco

WILL 106 Gender Relations: The Rice Experience

This class will function as an overview and investigation into gender relations, specifically as they relate to Rice University. We will be exploring the stereotypes concerning the social life at Rice as well as general gender relations studies of college students. We will also look at such roles as popular culture, feminism, scientific influences, the role of alcohol/illegal substances, acceptance of diversity, and Rice traditions (i.e. Screw Yer Roommate, NOD, etc). The class will include a midterm paper and a final paper as well as short homework assignments. Instructors: Sarah Nations & Gaelyn Sicher-Ford

WILL 107 Introduction to Advertising

In this participatory 13-week course students learn the practical skills that enable them to become beginning advertising professionals. They learn how to evaluate advertising, a 300 billion dollar plus business in the United States. This involves dealing with the broad fundamentals of advertising including brand positioning, strategic planning (analysis), copywriting, art direction, production, media concepts, and research, as well as integrated marketing communications in general. Real life marketer assignments integrated with course. Preference to seniors and juniors. Instructor: Ann Iverson

The Cultural Body: This seminar focuses on human and non-human bodies as not only symbolic of culture, but also as culture itself. How do physiology and social processes interact? What is the physical nature of "cultural" categories such as gender, race, class and sexuality? (Where) do we draw the line between nature and nurture?

Sexual Medicine: The history and contemporary practice of sexual (bio)medicine will be examined and analyzed. This course is intended for students from all disciplines. Topics will include: contraception, pain conditions, sexual enhancement drugs and procedures, sexual reassignment, genital surgeries, and Texas’ unique relationship with the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil.

The Story of an Equation
Andrew Wiles
Location: Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center
Before 1993, it was unprecedented for leading international newspapers such as the New York Times and Le Monde to proclaim a mathematical breakthrough on their front pages. But that year, Andrew Wiles earned the honor by solving Fermat’s Last Theorem, which had become the most famous mathematical problem of all time by resisting solutions by eminent mathematicians for nearly 360 years.

The President’s Lecture Series Committee is also soliciting recommendations from undergraduate and graduate students for the 2008-09 Series. If you have a recommendation, please fill out the form at http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pAlYM7vZmTy-IjupSTKVTXg by Wednesday, November 12. 10. Campus and Community Blood Drives
The next campus blood drives are Monday, November 17 through Thursday, November 20 in the residential colleges and the Rice Memorial Center. Rice University participates with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center as a "Commit For Life" partner. Through this relationship, Rice University sponsors 4 blood drives annually to help meet the needs of over 220 health care institutions in a 24-county Texas Gulf Coast region.

There is no substitute for blood. It has to come from one person in order to give to another. A critical number of voluntary donations are required every day to meet the need for blood in the Gulf Coast region. However, we are consistently falling short, and falling short means we may not have enough blood for someone like you. The process of giving blood takes about 1 hour. Appointments are encouraged and will be given priority, but walk-ins are always welcome.

TO SIGN UP TO DONATE:

Making an appointment is easy! Visit the Community Involvement Center's web site (http://www.rice.edu/service) and click on the link for "Campus Blood Drives." You will be directed to the on-line scheduling system for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. If you have not used the on-line system before you can fill out the form with some basic information that the blood bank will need. Once you have selected your appointment time, date, and location, you will receive an e-mail confirming your appointment and a reminder before your appointment.

Act Now to End Executions!

Texas executes more than any other state. This fall, the state has been executing two inmates a week with six more scheduled for the year. Join Rice for Peace in demanding an end to executions! The Death Penalty does not deter crime, kills innocent people, targets the poor, costs more than a life sentence, uses violence to solve violence, and does not bring closure to victims' families.

You can ACT NOW! Call Texas Governor Rick Perry 1-800-252-9600 or drop him an email at governor.state.tx.us/contact/ on the day of every execution date: Nov 6, Nov 12, Nov 13, Nov 18, Nov 19, Nov 20. Together we can make a really huge difference! If you want to volunteer and join the movement for a peaceful society, email us at activism@rice.edu.

8. Dennis Huston Classes S08
Potential Public Speakers Take Note
This year the sign-up for Dennis Huston?s section of Humanities 201 (Public Speaking) will be at 7:30 in the morning in room 332 of Herring Hall on Monday, November 10. Since at present there is room for only 16 people in this class, those who wish to take the course?who will eventually sign up in the order in which they arrive?will almost certainly have to be there long before 7:30 a.m. on Monday. Any student who arrives at Herring 332 when the class is filled may sign up as an alternate and go home, but the students who wish to be on the official role for the course must stay in Herring until I arrive on Monday morning at 7:30 to sign them up. All students except freshmen are eligible for this course. I promise I will get seniors out of Herring Hall in time to sign up for their next semester courses.
---------------------------------------------
9. Change your Password when you Change your Clocks
Please change your login password for all the Rice
University systems you access at least once or twice
a year.

One easy-to-remember guideline is to change your passwords
when you change your clocks. Daylight Saving Time ends
November 2, 2008, so the first week of November is a good
time to change your passwords.

Additional information about how unchanged passwords endanger
Rice systems and data can be found on the IT web site at:
http://www.rice.edu/it/security/passwords.html

Questions? Contact Marc Scarborough, Information
Security Officer, x5735 or marcs@rice.edu.

Thanks for helping make Rice safer for your
computer, your identity, and your data.

10. Private Eyes Opening Night
COME JOIN US FOR OPENING NIGHT AND CELEBRATION!

NOVEMBER 7, 2008, 8 P.M.

SPECIAL ADMISSION: $5

Rice Players and the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts Theatre Program presents

Private Eyes by Steven Dietz

Directed by Julia Traber

Private Eyes is a comedy of suspicion in which nothing is ever quite what it seems. Who is really having an affair with whom? Or is it all part of the play that's being rehearsed? Or, is it, for that matter, an elaborate therapy session? The audience itself plays the role of detective in this hilarious "relationship thriller" about love, lust and the power of deception.

The Rice Players, Rice's oldest collegiate theatre troupe, has teamed up with the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts Theatre Program for our first collaboration. The completely student run company has teamed up with other groups in the past, but this is the first co-production with the new Theatre Program, uniting two of the biggest theater groups with the most resources on Rice campus for the first time.

The director, Julia Traber has just been named the Associate Artistic Director of the Classical Theatre Company. Ms. Traber has worked as an actor, assistant director, director, and teaching artist for various local and regional professional theatres and educational institutions including: Alley Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Houston Shakespeare Festival, Children's Theatre Festival, Main Street Youth Theatre, The Texas Repertory Theatre Co., Unhinged Productions, Unity Theatre, and the University of Houston. She created and directed the Alley Theatre's Young Performers Studio for several seasons and is currently a drama specialist for the International Baccalaureate program in the Aldine Independent School District and an adjunct faculty member of the Drama Department at San Jacinto College, South Campus.

Performances are Friday November 7th - 8th at 8pm, Sunday November 9th at 2pm; Thursday November 13th - 15th at 8pm. Tickets: Students $5, Rice Faculty, Staff & Senior Citizens $8, General Audience $10. Performances are at Hamman Hall. Tickets are available in advance by calling 713-348-PLAY.

12. Super Smash Bros. Tournament
This Saturday, November 1, is Rice's annual Super Smash Bros. tournament, sponsored by Fast Warp. The event will be happening at Martel College in the classrooms on the first floor. We will start signing people in at around 8:45 and we hope to start gameplay by 9:30. Entry is $5, and there will be prizes for the winners.

In addition to the individual tournament, we have three novelty tournaments that will prove to be immensely entertaining. All entrants into the main tournament are eligible to play in these as well.

Furthermore, we have an inter-college crew tournament for teams of up to five students from each of the nine (yes, nine) colleges to compete in. Each college needs one captain to lead the team through the tournament, and so far we only have captains from four of the nine. If you are at Hanszen, Wiess, Lovett, Jones, or Brown, and you are interested in becoming your college's captain, please e-mail icj1@rice.edu.

Officer Graham: Has the alcohol policy changed? No, but if you’re not following it, don’t be stupid about it. Some officers are more strict than others, but don’t piss them off. Stay in your rooms, don’t vomit on officers’ shoes.

Abbie’s final advice: breathe on Sara, not a police officer.

4. Submit Nominations for Homecoming 2008
Hey Rice,

It's true that NOD is just around the corner, we can almost touch Halloween, and the 2008 election is within spitting range, but let's focus on something more important for a second: the Rice Homecoming Election. Each year, a couple of people/places/things, in utmost dignity, have the supreme honor of being crowned Rice Homecoming King and Queen. (Last year's winners were Todd Graham and the green fences). Voting for Homecoming will take place in the days before Halloween, but you can't vote if we don't have a ballot! Submit your nominees for Homecoming King or Queen to Student Association Election Chair Timothy Faust at awesome@rice.edu by Saturday, October 25, and try to get your candidate on the ballot!

Best,
Timothy Faust
SA Elections Chair

5. Free ice cream at the Sexual Health Resources Panel
Who knew you can get condoms from over 21 locations on campus?

Come to the Sexual Health Resources Panel in the Sid Rich Commons this Tuesday, October 21, at 9:00 pm to learn more about the resources available to you on campus and in Houston, including condoms, Plan B, STD testing, abortion services, adoption agencies, relationship counseling and pregnancy counseling. Dr. McKelvey from Health Services and student representatives will be present to talk about sexual health on campus.

There will also be free ice cream and condoms!!

Please come, especially freshman! We know its hard to pay attention during all the O-week presentations, and a lot of this information isn't covered. It will be a short, laid back event...

Any questions? Email Dayna Fondell at dfondell@rice.edu

Brought to you by Rice for Choice.

6. Lindy Hop class pushed back a week
RSDS is expanding the number of classes offered! A beginners' Lindy Hop class will begin on THURSDAY, OCT 30th at 8:00.

Lindy Hop is an 8-count dance, which is the classic original swing dance begun in the first part of the 20th century. More info at: rsds.rice.edu

If you can't wait that long, come out and dance with us this Thursday (Oct. 23) starting at 6:30 in Ray Courtyard (no lessons, just music). Or check out one of our other classes on the site.

7. Slow Burn Halloween Show: Friday at 9pm
What's better than Halloween? Nothing! But Slow Burn's Halloween show should come pretty close. Slow Burn is Rice's longform improvisation troupe: with one suggestion, we make twenty- to thirty-minute stories with no preparation and from the tops of our heads and tips of our tongues. We have a pretty stellar lineup for this show, featuring some brand-new forms never before seen at Rice. Come prepared to enjoy yourself and leave taller, stronger, and with more clearly-defined abs.

SLOW BURN
Friday, October 24 (the day before NOD - make a wise choice the night before you make a series of terrible choices)
9 - 10.05 pm
Herring Hall 100

(We'll even have some Halloween candy. What other performance groups give you free candy? None of them. Not even the Phils. Take that, 'Africa'.)
