5. Intercollegiate Recycling Competition
The Intercollegiate Recycling Competition is taking place this week and next, October 27 - November 7th. You can help win cash for your college's green fund (to be put toward environmental projects) by recycling the most aluminum. At the end of the two weeks, the recycled aluminum will be brought to a recycling center and the earnings from all of the colleges will go to the winning college.
To kick off the Intercollegiate Recycling Competition there will be a study break on Tuesday, October 28, at 9:00 p.m. in the Kelley Lounge at the RMC (if you enter through the front doors of the RMC, take a right, pass by Coffee Shop, and we will be by the couches across the way). We will be talking about the benefits of recycling aluminum, eating FREE PIZZA, and watching an episode of The Simpsons about recycling.
Recap:
RECYCLE ALUMINUM and get MONEY for your college!

6. Compete in Apple Insomnia Film Festival--with help from the DMC
On November 15, Apple will sponsor its annual Insomnia contest, in which students will have 24 hours to make a 3 minute movie that has at least 3 required elements. Winners receive new laptops, software, and glory. Fondren's Digital Media Center (DMC), the university's central computing lab for all things multimedia, wants to help Rice students win. If you're interested in working on your film at the DMC, we'll let you borrow camcorders, make available one of 6 video editing workstations, and provide training in editing video; we may even supply coffee and donuts. We'll stay open all 24 hours of the contest, but only if enough students express interest in competing. If you are interested, contact janezhao@rice.edu by Friday, November 7.
For more information, see http://www.apple.com/education/insomnia/ To see some fabulous films made by Rice teams for last year's contest, see http://library.rice.edu/services/digital_media_center/gallery/dmc-gallery
