1. ELECTION 2008 SURVEY
RICE ELECTION 2008 SURVEY

McCain or Obama, right or left, change or experience, paper or plastic - what does Rice think?

The Rice Standard wants to gauge the political views of campus with a comprehensive ELECTION SURVEY. The poll addresses issues in presidential politics and on a few broader areas of debate as well, and asks a handful of questions designed to understand voting patterns within the Rice student body.

It's fast (just 5 minutes), entirely confidential, and, if you choose, you may be entered into a drawing for a $50 cash prize! Please take the handful of minutes required to fill out the Rice Election Survey and let your voice be heard ~ help us all learn how the campus feels about the election and its issues. Comprehensive results will be released in the October 28 Rice Standard!

3. ZIPCAR
The Zipcar program was successfully launched yesterday. For those who have not heard about the program, Zipcar, a car-sharing service, is an easy way to get access to a car, whether it's for an hour or an overnight trip. The service allows members to reserve a car on line or via a mobile device any time - day or night. Hourly rate of $7 and daily rate of $60 include gas, insurance and use of the car up to 180 miles per day.

Rice University applicants must be at least 18 years old to become Zipcar members. There is a $35 annual membership fee and new members receive a $35 credit in the first 60 days.

I would like to report that the second car (Volvo S40) is scheduled to arrive today and will be available for service tomorrow. The other car is a Toyota Prius. Both cars are parked centrally on campus in the Baker College lot. To learn more about the Zipcar program, please visit www.zipcar.com/rice.

In order that your membership be approved, please make sure that you include your Rice email address, and E (employee) or S (student) number in your application.

If you have any questions please contact the Transportation Office at x5223 or x5996.

6. EVERYTHING'S COOL"--a documentary by the CLEAN GROUP

Enviro Club is participating in a screening of "EVERYTHING'S COOL" by the Clean Group! Come and watch :)

Join CLEAN as we feature /EVERYTHING'S COOL/ , a film about America finally "getting" global warming in the wake of the most dangerous chasm ever to emerge between scientific understanding and political action. While industry funded nay-sayers sing what just might be their swan song of pseudo- scientific deception, a group of global warming messengers are on a high stakes quest to find the iconic image, the magic language, the points of leverage that will finally create the political will to move the United States from its reliance on fossil fuels to the new clean energy economy - AND FAST.

Following the screening, an expert will be on hand to lead a discussion on the issues mentioned in the film and take questions from the audience.

*When:* Wednesday, October 15th@ 7 pm
*Where:* Rice Media Center, Rice University (entrance #8 located at Stockton and University Blvd.)
*Fee:* None, however, donations will be accepted at the door.
If you guys want feel free to join the face book event!

8. Metro Q Cards available at the Cashier's Office
If Rice undergraduate students need to take a bus or ride METRORail to
downtown (or to the connect to the direct to IAH bus service) free Metro Q
Card are available from the Cashier's Office. Please note that cards that
were issued last year were cancelled by Metro. Simply having a Metro card in
your possession does not mean that you can board a bus or METRORail without
tapping your card. If a METRO officer is checking for tickets, they will ask
to scan your card. If it hasn't been tapped you will still receive a fine.
Please take advantage of this incredible (and free) opportunity to take
advantage of all that Houston has to offer.

Use your Metro Q Card to attend "Rice Night at the Museum" from 7 - 9 pm on
Friday, October 25 when the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and "Passport to
Houston" will host a Rice only reception with gourmet appetizers! Check
www.rice.edu/passport for more information.

If you have any questions or suggestions for future "Rice Nights", please
send them to passport@rice.edu.
