Join ROPE and Blue Marlin Sailing for an afternoon of cruising on a 38-foot sailboat with Captain Dave McCabe, USCG licensed master and trans-Atlantic sailor. Learn your way around the sailboat or practice skills that you already know. Hands-on sailing, instruction, equipment, transportation, and lunch provided.
Message from Captain Dave: Step up to the challenge of sailing a beautiful 38 foot sailboat off Kemah, on Galveston Bay, and savor the effects of this unique 'hydro-therapy'. Some of you may wish to just kick back and enjoy the afternoon. Others may want to actually participate in hoisting the sails and/or steering the boat. Both opportunities are before you. Go for it!

3. Rice Fitness Survey - We need your input!
With only 7 months until the new recreation and wellness center opens, Rice Fitness is excitedly planning the most comprehensive programming to suit your passions. That being said, we need your help. We have created an online survey online that takes less than 5 minutes, but that will provide us invaluable information regarding your thoughts and desires for group fitness, personal training and specialty and orientation programs in the future. In these high stress times, physical activity is an important component to maintaining a healthy balance and we want to make it accessible to everyone.
Your input is critical to us for developing a good program, so let your voice be heard. Tell us about your favorite class format, what times you want classes, what we should keep and what you've seen work elsewhere. We will work to accommodate you as we are able.

4. Conversation Partner Program
Rice University’s Intensive English Program, offered through the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, is recruiting Conversation Partners. We have approximately 196 students from over 30 different countries in our English as a Second Language Program, all of whom are looking to meet native English speakers.
Our Conversation Partner Program is not a tutoring program. The main goal is our students to be able to practice English in an informal setting. The time commitment required may be as little as an hour a week. We will match you up with one of our students. Where and when you meet will be decided by you and your partner. No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.
Current session dates: January 12 – March 2.
If you are interested, please respond to fl@rice.edu by February 3, 2009.

5. Revised Crime Alert
On Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at approximately 10:57 PM a woman reported being physically assaulted in the Humanities Building. She encountered the male suspect sleeping on a table in Room 327. When confronted, the man attacked her and a struggle ensued. After the short struggle the woman was able to call for help, and the suspect fled in an unknown direction. The suspect is dangerous and still at large.
The suspect is described as a male, white, about 25-28 years of age, 5'6"-5'7" tall with light brown hair and eyes. He had three pre-existing red scratches on the right side of his face. At the time of the attack he was wearing a black jacket and black gloves.
A police investigation is continuing. If you have information about this or any other suspicious person or activity on campus, please contact the University Police Department at (713) 348-6000 or by using any blue light emergency phone.
