1. It's that time of year! Scholarship Nomination Time!

It's that time of year again -- time to nominate students you feel have contributed to theatre in a significant way this academic year and who deserve to receive either the Barbara Long Chilton Scholarship or the Neil "Sandy" Havens Scholarship. These merit scholarships are awarded to returning undergraduate students who have demonstrated exceptional potential in theatre or who have made a significant contribution to theatre at Rice, including college theatre, student organizations, or the Visual and Dramatic Arts Theatre Program.

If you would like to nominate someone please send their name and a brief letter of recommendation to me by reply e-mail no later than Wednesday, March 25th. All nominees
will then be asked for a resume, an additional letter of recommendation, and a personal statement about their involvement in theatre at Rice to be turned in by Friday, April 3,
2009.

3. EQ/HACER Book Drive (donate all you want w/o risk of passing out)

The two on-campus organizations Egyptian Queens and HACER are teaming up to sponsor a book drive to benefit the underprivileged youth of the local Weekley Family YMCA branch. This particular branch is located in an economically-disadvantaged, educationally-deprived Southwest Houston apartment complex. Education is fundamental for our youth, but unfortunately education is not a major priority here. THE DROP-OUT RATE FOR STUDENTS IN THIS COMPLEX AFTER THE 8TH GRADE IS 99%!!!!! When we found out about their efforts to create a library at their facility we were eager to support them.

We would really appreciate everyone's assistance in helping with this matter. Book donations of any kind will be accepted and appreciated, as well as monetary donations. We will have Book Drive drop-off boxes in each of the colleges beginning March 11th for a total of two weeks. (If you have books before the 11th you can put them in front of HACER's office, located in the RMC Basement.) We urge you to collect any books you are not using over spring break, and bring them back to school with you. Help us make education a greater priority at the Weekley Family YMCA!!!!!

4. Linda Williams Prize for Social Justice

Rice established the Linda Faye Williams Prize for Social Justice to recognize work that furthers social justice and enables understanding across boundaries of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, class, nationality, sexual orientation and ideology.

The award is named for the late Linda Faye Williams '70, one of the first two black undergraduate students to enter Rice and earn a bachelor's degree after the university abandoned its charter provision that limited enrollment to white students. Williams died October 16, 2006, at the age of 57.

Williams was a professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland and a highly regarded expert on race and gender politics. She also held positions with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Her most recent book, "Constraint of Race: Legacies of White Skin Privilege in America," won three national book awards, including the American Political Science Association's selection as the year's best book on race, ethnicity and politics.

The Linda Fay Williams Prize for Social Justice, which includes a $1,000 stipend, will be awarded annually to a graduating senior or a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree (within five years of graduation).

Please let us know if you are able to assist us with the selection of this year's recipient.

We would appreciate receiving your nomination, along with a brief narrative of the work the recipient has performed. Nominations should be sent to the Dean of Undergraduates by Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

2009 Year-End Awards
The Office of Student Activities, the SA Awards Committee, the Association of Rice Alumni, and the Community Involvement Center coordinate their respective year-end awards that recognize service by students to the Rice community. Any member of the Rice community may submit a nomination. Qualified candidates may be considered for any of the six awards. If you have any questions please contact the Office of Student Activities (x4097).

1) The RICE UNIVERSITY SERVICE AWARD, given in memory of Dean of Students Hugh Scott Cameron, is awarded to as many as four individuals of the Rice student population, past and present, who have been most exemplary in rendering service to the student body.

2) The OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARDS are given to graduating seniors who have contributed the most to excellence at Rice University. This award recognizes excellence not only in service but also performance, dedication, and character.

3) The MORTY RICH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a continuing student who has distinguished himself/herself through his/her commitment and service to Rice and/or to the greater community. The successful candidate(s) will have recognized a need in the community, developed objectives, and implemented or established program(s) that would benefit the community and will realize no personal gain for these efforts.

4) The ALAN GROB PRIZE is named in honor of Alan Grob, for forty years a great teacher of literature at Rice University and a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. The prize is awarded annually to the Rice undergraduate who, through service to the larger community, has demonstrated the most devotion to the needs and interests of the economically and culturally disadvantaged. The recipient's activities shall exemplify the values of community service that Professor Grob lived and so eloquently taught. The recipient must be a current Rice University undergraduate, but does not have to be continuing (can be a graduating senior).

A faculty letter of recommendation and a resume are required for the Sallyport Award.

6) The ZAINAB SALBI COMMENCEMENT AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY

Women for Women International provides women survivors of war, civil strife, and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies.

Please stop leaving comments on every single announcement, it demeans some of their messages. There is a difference between what you're doing and writing just one or two funny comments, but the main purpose of the fun page is just to inform the people. When i have to read all the little tag line comments it makes me not want to read the fun page at all.

Hey Anon!

You bring up a very good point. It's in my nature to make light of things and I realize there's a good chance I've gone overboard with it. Whereas I can't promise this won't happen again, now that I'm aware of it I'll do my best to make sure I keep myself in check.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! And I hope you'll forgive this misstep on my part. I'm afraid I'm still learning, but I really appreciate the help you've offered. :D
