3. Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox @ the Baker Institute

The Founding Director of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy cordially invites you to a special presentation and book signing for

"Mission: Black List #1"
with author Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox

Monday, April 6, 2009
6:00 pm Reception
6:30 pm Presentation

Doré Commons
Baker Hall

Books will be provided for sale courtesy of Brazos Bookstore.

“Mission: Black List #1” was released Dec. 13, 2008, to coincide with the fifth
anniversary of Saddam Hussein’s capture. Prior to this, the real story of the manhunt, and the personnel involved, had not been revealed to the public. In the book, Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox pulls back the curtain to reveal a detailed, day-by-day account of the five-month, comprehensive search for Saddam.

Maddox was the Army officer who spearheaded the search leading to the capture of one of the most sought-after men in the world. His story fills in every gap, including his crucial decision to zero in on a lead pointing to the all-but-unknown group of Hussein’s former inner-circle bodyguards. Maddox’s idea was simple: Find the inner-circle bodyguards and you would find Saddam.

For his service, Maddox was awarded the Defense Intelligence Agency Director’s Award, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement for his role in the capture of Saddam Hussein.

Please RSVP by fax to 713.348.5993 or by e-mail to bipprsvp@rice.edu before Thursday,
April 2, 2009.

16. Rice Service Council Application Deadline

Want to make an impact on the culture of service at Rice?
Only a few more days to apply for the inaugural year of the Rice Service Council!

Rice is a small campus that has several effective student organizations that promote service and advocate for social responsibility. At times, however, there is a lack of communication between these campus groups, which can limit their creativity, resources, and impact. As a Rice volunteer, you have the opportunity to have a tremendous influence on the culture of service on campus by becoming a member of the new Rice Service Council. Working with other student leaders, you will not only represent your service organization, but also increase collaborative efforts both on and off campus.

The Rice Service Council will have four different initiatives:
1. Create a forum in which Student Service Organization leaders can learn, share, and benefit from each other;
2. Coordinate a campus-wide annual Volunteer Recognition Event;
3. Increase volunteer leadership development, including coordinating a Fall Service Retreat; and
4. Advertise and advise on the awarding of the Community Service Grant, Spirit of Service Awards, and service-based scholarships.

For more information, or to apply, visit the CIC's website (http://cic.rice.edu). Applications are due by 5:00 pm this Monday, March 16, 2009.

If you have any questions, please contact me at sarah.hodgkinson@rice.edu or 713-348-6409.

Thanks!
