9. The 2008 Presidential Election and the Environment
With the media circus surrounding McCain and Obama, it's difficult for anyone to get a concrete understanding of the environmental policies of each and of the social, political, and economic effects these policies could have on the United States after the Presidential Inauguration this January.
Come learn about the environmental policies of both candidates in a non-partisan environment; everyone (and their parents - literally) are welcome to come and listen to:
-Karoline Mortensen talk about Environmental Politics
-Matt Chen talk about Energy Policy
-Jim Blackburn being Jim Blackburn and talking about Environmental Law and a myriad of other topics
Aside from these awesome speakers, there will be cookies and coffee for all, always a tasty and alluring treat. So stop by and learn something that you can discuss over dinner with your parents. Or if your parents aren't in town for the weekend, that's ok, just come on your own, or with friends, or with anyone you see on the street...just come and get excited about becoming a more informed voter!!

17. U Court
Calling all Freshmen!
Interested in policy or thinking about law school? Want to get involved with student government but don't know how? Want to have a say in how Texas law and the Student Code of Conduct are enforced on campus? If you answered yes to these questions, apply now to be a Freshmen representative to University Court.
U Court is the student-run body that adjudicates violations of the Student Code of Conduct and many Texas state misdemeanors that occur on campus. We meet about twice a month to discuss if and how to charge students for the crimes you see each week in the Thresher's police blotter (and some you don't). If you're interested in getting involved, contact ben.carson@rice.edu for more information or an application. Applications will be due Sunday, the 28th of September at midnight.
