1. Talk for Humanities Majors (AKA hey guys it's okay you will get jobs too)

“What are you going to do with that?”
Applications of a Humanities Degree to a Business Setting
Ann Ziker (Ph.D. from Rice in History, 2008), Associate , McKinsey & Company
March 19, 2009, 7:00pm
Herring Hall 126

The humanities are often portrayed as a discipline with few applications in the "real world." Yet the core skills of a humanities degree -- independent inquiry, critical analysis, crisp writing, and, yes, even knowing where the commas go -- position students well for success in a variety of professional and business settings. Ann Ziker will share some of her experiences after making the leap from humanities scholarship to management consulting. At McKinsey she has advised clients on a variety of strategic and organizational issues.

This talk has been organized by the Humanities Research Center on behalf of its Undergraduate Fellowship Program. All Rice students are invited to attend the talk, which is part of the speaker series “Big Questions and Future Directions in the Humanities.”

Thursday March 19th
Sewall Hall 309, 7:30 pm
Bossa Nova (Portuguese, with English subtitles), 2000. A film by Bruno Barreto. Comedy, Romance: 95 min.

Bossa Nova is a romantic comedy set in Rio de Janeiro. A film by Bruno Barreto, who has directed and/or produced films such as Dona Flor, Four Days in September, Bye, Bye Brazil among several others. Brazil is, unfortunately, known through movies that are sensationalist, violent, portraying it at its worst, such as City of God, Elite Squad, to name a few. Bossa Nova is just the opposite; it is light, fun, the photography is splendid, the characters are typical of both Brazilian and American cultures and reality. The soundtrack is all about Brazil.

The time commitment required may be as little as an hour a week. You will be matched with one of the students. Where and when you meet will be decided by you and your partner. No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.

This particular branch is located in an economically-disadvantaged,educationally-deprived Southwest Houston apartment complex. Education is fundamental for our youth, but unfortunately education is not a major priority here. THE DROP-OUT RATE FOR STUDENTS IN THIS COMPLEX AFTER THE 8TH GRADE IS 99%!!!!! When we found out about their efforts to create a library at their facility we were eager to support them.

We would really appreciate everyone's assistance in helping with this matter. Book donations of any kind will be accepted and appreciated, as well as monetary donations. We will have Book Drive drop-off boxes in each of the colleges until the end of March. Help us make education a greater priority at the Weekley Family YMCA!!!!!

12. Loewenstern Fellowship Presentation - Puente (omg <3) and Yeh

"A Night of Llamas, Mangos, and International Service"
** Open to Rice University and Houston Communities **

Monday, March 23 - 7:00-8:00pm
Martel College - Masters' House
Presenters: Michael Puente and Tiffany Yeh

Over the summer 2008, nine Rice University undergraduate students completed 4- to 12-week service projects with community organizations throughout Latin America as part of the inaugural year of the Loewenstern Fellowships. The 2008-09 class of Fellows will present to the Rice University community information on their experiences at this fourth of four sessions. Refreshments will be provided.

Guests are requested to RSVP by e-mail (griswold@rice.edu) or on the Facebook event (http://www.facebook.com/event.phpeid=72798071194).

Join Loewenstern Fellows Michael Puente & Tiffany Yeh as they reminisce about their past summer experiences in Peru, Haiti, and Guatemala. Both rediscovered their inner child as they spent time teaching and playing with kids of all ages. Michael was in Cusco, Peru working with ProWorld Service Corps as a much-needed mentor and friend for disabled children. Tiffany was in Terrier Rouge, Haiti where she taught health/science education to 450 school children. While they both learned much from the experience, hopefully their contributions had a wider impact, reaching the kids as well as their surrounding community. Come and listen to their stories!

Michael Puente volunteered in a pediatric clinic in Cuzco, Peru assisting the medical staff of the facility. He also interacted with patients and took care of the basic needs of the students at an associated special needs school. Michael is a junior Biological Sciences student with medical school aspirations.

Tiffany Yeh implemented a school health-science curriculum she developed to teach primary school children in Haiti about basic hygiene and science. At a medical outreach center in Guatemala, she assisted with projects and assessed program needs. Tiffany is a graduating senior in Cognitive Sciences.

More information on the Loewenstern Fellowships program is available on the Community Involvement Center's web site at http://cic.rice.edu/loewenstern.

15. “Friendship and Partiality” Lecture with Richard Arneson

Rice University Lecture Series on Ethics, Politics and Society
“Friendship and Partiality”
Richard Arneson

Abstract: People usually are disposed to favor friends over strangers, but how does this partiality reconcile with morality, which requires impartial concern for all? On many accounts, the basis of friendship is the recognition of an individual’s attractive and admirable traits — but traits may disappear, so there is tension between this idea and the ideal of unconditionally enduring love and friendship. If putting a thumb on the scale in favor of one’s friends and family members is acceptable in some contexts, what about partiality to fellow members of one’s own community, nation, ethnic or racial group? Richard Arneson presents an account of friendship that addresses some of these issues while recognizing that others may remain vexing and yet unsolved.

3. Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox @ the Baker Institute

The Founding Director of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy cordially invites you to a special presentation and book signing for

"Mission: Black List #1"
with author Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox

Monday, April 6, 2009
6:00 pm Reception
6:30 pm Presentation

Doré Commons
Baker Hall

Books will be provided for sale courtesy of Brazos Bookstore.

“Mission: Black List #1” was released Dec. 13, 2008, to coincide with the fifth
anniversary of Saddam Hussein’s capture. Prior to this, the real story of the manhunt, and the personnel involved, had not been revealed to the public. In the book, Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox pulls back the curtain to reveal a detailed, day-by-day account of the five-month, comprehensive search for Saddam.

Maddox was the Army officer who spearheaded the search leading to the capture of one of the most sought-after men in the world. His story fills in every gap, including his crucial decision to zero in on a lead pointing to the all-but-unknown group of Hussein’s former inner-circle bodyguards. Maddox’s idea was simple: Find the inner-circle bodyguards and you would find Saddam.

For his service, Maddox was awarded the Defense Intelligence Agency Director’s Award, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement for his role in the capture of Saddam Hussein.

Please RSVP by fax to 713.348.5993 or by e-mail to bipprsvp@rice.edu before Thursday,
April 2, 2009.

16. Rice Service Council Application Deadline

Want to make an impact on the culture of service at Rice?
Only a few more days to apply for the inaugural year of the Rice Service Council!

Rice is a small campus that has several effective student organizations that promote service and advocate for social responsibility. At times, however, there is a lack of communication between these campus groups, which can limit their creativity, resources, and impact. As a Rice volunteer, you have the opportunity to have a tremendous influence on the culture of service on campus by becoming a member of the new Rice Service Council. Working with other student leaders, you will not only represent your service organization, but also increase collaborative efforts both on and off campus.

The Rice Service Council will have four different initiatives:
1. Create a forum in which Student Service Organization leaders can learn, share, and benefit from each other;
2. Coordinate a campus-wide annual Volunteer Recognition Event;
3. Increase volunteer leadership development, including coordinating a Fall Service Retreat; and
4. Advertise and advise on the awarding of the Community Service Grant, Spirit of Service Awards, and service-based scholarships.

For more information, or to apply, visit the CIC's website (http://cic.rice.edu). Applications are due by 5:00 pm this Monday, March 16, 2009.

If you have any questions, please contact me at sarah.hodgkinson@rice.edu or 713-348-6409.

3. EQ/HACER Book Drive (donate all you want w/o risk of passing out)

The two on-campus organizations Egyptian Queens and HACER are teaming up to sponsor a book drive to benefit the underprivileged youth of the local Weekley Family YMCA branch. This particular branch is located in an economically-disadvantaged, educationally-deprived Southwest Houston apartment complex.

We will have Book Drive drop-off boxes in each of the colleges beginning March 11th for a total of two weeks. (If you have books before the 11th you can put them in front of HACER's office, located in the RMC Basement.) We urge you to collect any books you are not using over spring break, and bring them back to school with you. Help us make education a greater priority at the Weekley Family YMCA!!!!!

---------------------------------------------
4. Linda Williams Prize for Social Justice

Rice established the Linda Faye Williams Prize for Social Justice to recognize work that furthers social justice and enables understanding across boundaries of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, class, nationality, sexual orientation and ideology.

The award is named for the late Linda Faye Williams '70, one of the first two black undergraduate students to enter Rice and earn a bachelor's degree after the university abandoned its charter provision that limited enrollment to white students. Williams died October 16, 2006, at the age of 57.

Williams was a professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland and a highly regarded expert on race and gender politics. She also held positions with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Her most recent book, "Constraint of Race: Legacies of White Skin Privilege in America," won three national book awards, including the American Political Science Association's selection as the year's best book on race, ethnicity and politics.

The Linda Fay Williams Prize for Social Justice, which includes a $1,000 stipend, will be awarded annually to a graduating senior or a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree (within five years of graduation).

Please let us know if you are able to assist us with the selection of this year's recipient.

We would appreciate receiving your nomination, along with a brief narrative of the work the recipient has performed. Nominations should be sent to the Dean of Undergraduates by Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

3. The Bochner Lecture: Neuropolitics in the 21st Century (it's brain pickin time)

THE BOCHNER LECTURE
Nikolas Rose
Martin White Professor of Sociology
Director, BIOS Centre for the Study of Bioscience,
Biomedicine, Biotechnology and Society
London School of Economics and Political Science

"Neuropolitics in the Twenty First Century"
What consequences will recent developments in neurobiology have for the ways in which we are governed by others, and the ways we govern ourselves? The development of psychology in the twentieth century had a major social impact: on understanding and treatment of distress; on conceptions of normality and abnormality; on techniques of socialisation, education, regulation, reformation and correction; on advertising, marketing and consumption technologies; on the management of human behaviour in practices from the factory to the military. Human beings came to understand themselves as inhabited by a deep interior psychological space that is the site of personhood and personality, the locus of inscription of beliefs, the origin of affect, the target of therapeutic interventions. Psychological expertise played a significant role in making it possible to govern individuals, families, groups and populations in liberal democracies. In the early 21st century, we are witnessing a cascade of claims from the new brain sciences, which appear to map conduct, affect, and cognition directly onto the brain. This lecture will consider whether the languages, techniques and personnel of the new neurobiological complex supplement or supplant psychological ways of thinking and acting. What are the social, political, economic, scientific and technological conditions for the emergence of these new ways of thinking? What styles of explanation and intervention are taking shape, and what are their consequences for ideas of subjectivity, identity and normality?

"Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project"

Since 2005, over a quarter of a million people have participated in the Genographic Project, a non-profit anthropological initiative that uses DNA to study humankind's ancient family tree and provide the first true "snapshot" picture of how human groups moved out of Africa and around the globe 60,000 years ago.

6. BEER!! BIKE!! parking preparations

If you were here during spring break, you may have noticed that the bike track located in the Greenbriar Parking Lot was closed temporarily for maintenance and preparation for Beer Bike. The bike track was re-opened today (March 9th) for use by students for Beer Bike training.
Also effective today, all parking within the track will be prohibited. Areas of the lot that are closed to parking will be flagged and barricaded, and Parking Enforcement and RUPD will monitor the lot to ensure this policy is enforced and the safety of students using the track is maintained. Riders should note, however, that approved vehicles will on occasion enter the closed interior of the track area to set up tents, bleachers, and other equipment for Beer Bike.
While the track area is closed to parking, West Lot 3 on the northeast side of the stadium will be open for approved parkers who currently use the Greenbriar Lot.
Beginning on March 25th, the bike track will be closed to riders on weekdays (M-F) and open to riders on weekends (Sat. and Sun.). Vehicle parking inside the track will be permitted again (on weekdays only) beginning on March 25th.
Thank you for your consideration and cooperation with these policies.
At Your Service,
The Rice Parking Team

7. A Muslim Woman's Jihad

What role does Jihad play for an American Muslim woman? What's it like to be a Muslim convert here?

The Muslim Students Association presents the first lecture of the Islamica Series: A Muslim Woman's Jihad. Don't miss this discussion with Professor Fidelma O'Leary, an Irish-born Muslim who was featured in the National Geographic documentary "Inside Mecca." Professor O'Leary will discuss how she came to find Islam, her struggle with living as an American Muslim, and how she has coped with her family's lack of acceptance of her Islamic faith. And best of all, you get a one-of-a-kind opportunity to ask questions and also speak with her after the event!

What: The Muslim woman's Jihad: A convert's perspective
When: Tuesday, March 10
Time: 8:00 - 9:30 pm
Where: Keck 102
A reception will follow the event.

Professor O'Leary teaches neuroscience at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. She is the co-founder of Freedom of Faith Foundation, an organization that promotes a more tolerant society where all people are free to practice their faiths.
We strongly encourage you to attend, especially now when reliable information about Islam is hard to find.

1. Egyptian Queens and HACER Book Drive

Education is fundamental for our youth, but unfortunately education is not a major priority here. THE DROP-OUT RATE FOR STUDENTS IN THIS COMPLEX AFTER THE 8TH GRADE IS 99%! When we found out about their efforts to create a library at their facility, we were eager to support them.

We would really appreciate everyone's assistance in helping with this matter. Book donations of any kind will be accepted and appreciated, as well as monetary donations.

3. An evening with Majora Carter! (even better than it sounds)

Tuesday, March 3, 2009
7:30 - 8:30 PM
Location: Stude Concert Hall,
Alice Pratt Brown Hall (Shepherd School)
Rice University

Green roofing, urban forestry and healthy wetlands throughout our cities, suburbs and country-side are just some of the ways we can reduce the burden on traditional infrastructure, provide great local jobs, and clean the air and water we all depend on for healthy lives. Robust horticultural infrastructure is a practical and cost-effective solution to many problems that positively affect people's lives in multiple ways. Environmental injustices and lack of good jobs are major contributing factor that lead fathers and sons to jail, moms to the E.R. with asthmatic children, and waste current tax dollars to support 20th century mistakes. The current talk of "shovel ready" projects eligible for government support should be used as an opportunity to invest in new solutions, and not repeat the mistakes that have lead us to ever-escalating public health, prison, welfare and concrete-based construction expenses. The beauty of life supports all of our interests, and Majora Carter is supporting true green solutions across America through her work at the helm of her innovative new consulting firm, the Majora Carter Group.

Majora Carter was born, raised, and continues to live in the South Bronx. In 2001, she founded the non-profit environmental justice solutions corporation Sustainable South Bronx to achieve environmental justice through economically sustainable projects informed by community needs. Her work has garnered numerous awards and accolades including a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, one of Essence Magazine's 25 Most Influential African-Americans in 2007, and one of the NY Post's Most Influential NYC Women for the past two years. She is a board member of the Wilderness Society, she hosts a special national public radio series entitled "The Promised Land," and is the co-host of The Green on the Sundance Channel.

This event is the Tuesday evening keynote of the 2009 DeLange Conference, "Transforming the Metropolis: Creating Sustainable and Humane Cities." Ms. Carter's talk is free and open to the public. Please direct any questions about this event to sustainability@rice.edu.

To attend other events at the conference, please register at http://delange.rice.edu

4. Year-End Awards

2009 Year-End Awards
The Office of Student Activities, the SA Awards Committee, the Association of Rice Alumni, and the Community Involvement Center coordinate their respective year-end awards that recognize service by students to the Rice community. Any member of the Rice community may submit a nomination. Qualified candidates may be considered for any of the six awards. If you have any questions please contact the Office of Student Activities (x4097).

1) The RICE UNIVERSITY SERVICE AWARD, given in memory of Dean of Students Hugh Scott Cameron, is awarded to as many as four individuals of the Rice student population, past and present, who have been most exemplary in rendering service to the student body.

2) The OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARDS are given to graduating seniors who have contributed the most to excellence at Rice University. This award recognizes excellence not only in service but also performance, dedication, and character.

3) The MORTY RICH SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a continuing student who has distinguished himself/herself through his/her commitment and service to Rice and/or to the greater community. The successful candidate(s) will have recognized a need in the community, developed objectives, and implemented or established program(s) that would benefit the community and will realize no personal gain for these efforts.

4) The ALAN GROB PRIZE is named in honor of Alan Grob, for forty years a great teacher of literature at Rice University and a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. The prize is awarded annually to the Rice undergraduate who, through service to the larger community, has demonstrated the most devotion to the needs and interests of the economically and culturally disadvantaged. The recipient's activities shall exemplify the values of community service that Professor Grob lived and so eloquently taught. The recipient must be a current Rice University undergraduate, but does not have to be continuing (can be a graduating senior).

5) The SALLYPORT AWARD is presented by the Association of Rice Alumni to recognize a deserving:

(i) undergraduate degree candidate who has made contributions to the Rice community above his or her individual college and who may not otherwise be recognized; and
(ii) graduate degree candidate who has made contributions to the Rice community above his or her individual department and who may not otherwise be recognized.
A faculty letter of recommendation and a resume are required for the Sallyport Award.

6) The ZAINAB SALBI COMMENCEMENT AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY
Rice University is soliciting nominations for the inaugural commencement award to be given in honor of this year's invited speaker.

Presented to a graduating student, the commencement award is designed to recognize the student that best exemplifies the values and causes of each year's invited commencement speaker. This year, the commencement award honors Ms. Zainab Salbi.

The Zainab Salbi Commencement Award for Leadership and Advocacy will honor a 2009 graduating student, undergraduate or graduate, whose academic or extracurricular work while at Rice University demonstrates compassion, understanding, and advocacy for issues affecting women or victims of foreign or domestic conflicts.

The award is named for Ms. Zainab Salbi, founder of the organization Women for Women International. Women for Women International provides women survivors of war, civil strife, and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies.
A paragraph describing the nominees contributions (300 words or less) and two references are required for nomination.
You may nominate a student for one or more of the above awards at:

5. Rice Service Council wants YOU (they got it bad, and that ain't good)

Want to make an impact on the culture of service at Rice?
Applications are now being accepted for the inaugural year of the Rice Service Council.

1. Create a forum in which Student Service Organization leaders can learn, share, and benefit from each other;
2. Coordinate a campus-wide annual Volunteer Recognition Event;

Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Monday, March 16, 2009.
If you have any questions, please contact me at sarah.hodgkinson@rice.edu or 713-348-6409.

Dear spring break,

Where the hell did you go? Seriously, you just got here. And who exactly told you that you could run off like that? Was it Erol? Freakin' Erol. Look, I don't blame you. He's hella handsome and crazy persuasive. I know. But he's also just crazy and I...I'm already starting to miss you. I realize we can't start over, but could you at least stay a bit longer? Please?

Sincerely,
Gracelyn
