1. Undergraduate Education Seminar
On November 13, the Rice MBA Finance Club will host an educational seminar for undergrads from 1pm – 4pm. We will teach the undergraduate students everything they need to know for Investment Banking, Sales & Trading, and general finance interviews. The seminar will take place at the Jones School in room 218. I will be assisted by Rob Meister, a senior undergrad who worked with me last summer as an analyst at JPM.
Feel free to pass this email on to everyone interested. RSVP by signing up at the following link:

3. ENGI 150
I will be teaching ENGI 150 again this spring. This fall, I had full enrollment (with a waiting list), and I hope to have a full batch of students this spring. The course is offered Tues and Thurs, 10:50-12:05.
The course focuses on learning important engineering skills, such as engineering design, communication, etc. This semester, I had MECH, ELEC, CEVE, CHBE and BIOE students (mostly MECH and ELEC students). Consider recommending this course to all engineering first-year students.
The course uses problem-based learning (PBL), a technique where students research and design solutions to authentic engineering problems. About 1/3 of the class time is “lecture” – see the list of topics from fall 2009. The remainder of class time is devoted to team PBL meetings, where the students are working together to solve problems. This fall, we did three problems: E-waste Disposal, Mathematical Model of Energy Loss through “Old” and “New” College Windows, and Drug Delivery.
Attached is a flier. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks, Ann Saterbak

4. West Lot asphalt repairs scheduled
Please be advised that beginning early Saturday November 7th , an asphalt contractor will close the bus loop roadway located on the west side of West Lot 2 up to the Lab Road extension in the Stadium Lot. This will include campus entrance 18 south to the turn off roadway north of West Lot 2. This closure is necessary to repair sections of failed roadway. These areas will remain closed until 4:00 pm Monday, November 9th.
West Lots 2 & 3 will still be open for parking, but access to West Lot 2 will only be from the east side and on only from the west side for West Lot 3. On Saturday, November 7th, parking along the bus loop roadway is discouraged in order to avoid getting extremem amounts of dust on your car. A map of the area is included in this email for your use.
If you have any questions about this work, please contact Max Amery at 713-348-5350. Questions related to parking should be directed to Mike Morgan at 713-348-2020.

6. Catalyst Study Break
Catalyst: Rice Undergraduate Science Review will be holding a study break on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 7-8 PM in Kelley Lounge (RMC). This is a great chance for anyone who'd like to learn more about this student-run journal, see our past publications, or talk to the current officers and staff members about getting involved. Anyone is welcome to attend, and you don't have to be a science major. Food will be provided as well.
We hope to see you there!

7. UN Film Festival
This weekend, Rice is hosting the United Nations Association Film Festival. And there are a number of events that may be of interest to you (see the schedule included in the attached poster), but I want to point your attention towards one special opportunity.
Everyone who read House on Sugar Beach by Helene Cooper, or who saw Helene when she spoke on our campus, will be interested in the showing of Iron Ladies of Liberia, a documentary about Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was elected Liberia's first female president in 2006, and her efforts to put the country back together after decades of civil war. This showing will be followed by a panel discussion. Saturday, 10am-noon. Student tickets are $8.

Guillermo Arriaga officially arrived on the international cinema scene in 2000 with the release of “Amores Perros.” The Mexico City native was working in television and had already made a name for himself as a novelist and college professor when his trilogy of film collaborations with director Alejandro González Iñárritu debuted to critical acclaim. Arriaga’s literary roots, boldly complex narrative structures, and willingness to explore issues and ideas that tap into our deepest fears helped raise the bar for Hollywood films. “Amores Perros” catapulted Arriaga and Iñárritu to international success with an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film and established a working relationship between the writer and director that would play out for two more feature films: “21 Grams” (2004) and “Babel” (2006). “Babel” received seven Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay, and was nominated for several Academy Awards. Arriaga’s next work was the screenplay for Tommy Lee Jones’ “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” (2005), a story of justice and redemption set in the dusty, lawless deserts along the U.S.-Mexico border. The script was honored with the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2007, the film adaptation of his book “El Búfalo de la Noche” (The Night Buffalo), directed by Jorge Hernández Aldana, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2008, Arriaga added film director to his accomplishments with “The Burning Plain,” which premiered at the Venice and Toronto film festivals.
RSVP by fax to 713.348.5993, by e-mail to bipprsvp@rice.edu or on the Web at
