14. PAIR College Counseling Needs Volunteers
Rice?s Partnership for the Advancement & Immersion of Refugees (PAIR) is looking for volunteers to help refugee students learn about the college/scholarship application process. Our goal is to teach refugees more about the American education system and help them as they apply (or prepare to apply) to colleges. We?ll be working with students in grades 9-12 at local high schools, and we need volunteers on Monday and/or Wednesday afternoons from 3-6 (including travel time). Volunteering with PAIR?s College Counseling division is a fun, easy way to get involved and provide needed guidance for these students. We?ll even reimburse any driving costs. As the Web has evolved, it has become a more powerful platform for finding and organizing information, sharing knowledge, and presenting ideas in an interactive, dynamic way. Managing citations can be a real pain—you have to type out or copy and paste bibliographic information, keep up with the source of each quotation, and format your bibliography properly. Enter Zotero, which bills itself as “a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives right where you do your work — in the web browser itself.” With Zotero, a tool designed by scholars for scholars, you can automatically download citation information, store PDFs of articles, search your research collections, and automatically create bibliographies and footnotes as you write. Zotero's simplicity and power have earned it praise from Inside Higher Education and PC Magazine, as well as countless enthusiastic researchers. This hands-on workshop, which will be taught by Digital Media Center director and Zotero-lover Lisa Spiro, will introduce some of the key functions of Zotero. By investing a couple of hours to learn Zotero, you can save yourself from spending countless hours typing citations and formatting bibliographies.

According to a 2005 UK study, information overload can lower IQ by as much as 10 points. Dazed by the deluge of information? Lisa Spiro, director of the Digital Media Center, will provide practical tips for dealing with information overload. She will discuss methods such as the “Getting Things Done” approach as well as computer-based tools for finding information, managing projects and to-do lists, organizing research, and more.

One-on-One Tutoring is looking for fun-loving, dedicated mentors! The Monday program, from 4-7 PM, works with middle schoolers, while the Wednesday program, from 3-6 PM, works with elementary schoolers. We work on character building with the kids and tutor them in math or reading to get them ready for their TAKS exams. There's also quality time for you to spend with your kid as you play games, run around on the playground, or amaze them with your three-point shooting ability.

10. Race for the Cure 2008
The Rice Women's Resource Center (RWRC) is happy to facilitate student registration for the 2008 Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 4th. Student registration fees will be subsidized by $5 by the RWRC. The RWRC will also organize a group of those who would like to travel to the race together (via the light rail) on race morning. You are not required to travel with the group or run/walk with the team.
The 18th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure benefits the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in its efforts to advance research, education, screening and treatment to eradicate breast cancer. The race will be held in the downtown area on Saturday, October 4th rain or shine. There is a 5K (3.1 mile) Run (competitive and non competitive), a 5-K walk, and a Kids K (a family walk of <1/2 mile).
The race schedule is as follows:
7:45 a.m. Opening Ceremonies & Memorial Birds
8:00 a.m. Family Walk and Kids K
8:15 a.m. 5K Timed Competitive Run
8:25 a.m. 5K Non-Competitive Run
8:35 a.m. 5K Walk

To receive the subsidy please follow these steps:
1. Either stop by the Office of Student Activities and pick up a registration form or email Heather Masden (hmasden@rice.edu) to request one
2. Complete the registration form and return it along with a check made payable to Rice University to the Office of Student Activities, RMC Cloisters.
* Your check can be made out $5 less then the fee listed on the form. Therefore if you want to register for the competitive race your check can be made out for $30 instead of the $35 listed on the form. (Please note that the RWRC will not subsidize any fees for Sleep in for the Cure.)
3. Forms should be turned in as soon as possible but will be accepted until Wednesday, September 24th at 5pm.

The 18th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure benefits the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in its efforts to advance research, education, screening and treatment to eradicate breast cancer. The race will be held in the downtown area on Saturday, October 4th rain or shine. There is a 5K (3.1 mile) Run (competitive and non competitive), a 5-K walk, and a Kids K (a family walk of <1/2 mile).
The race schedule is as follows:
7:45 a.m. Opening Ceremonies & Memorial Birds
8:00 a.m. Family Walk and Kids K
8:15 a.m. 5K Timed Competitive Run
8:25 a.m. 5K Non-Competitive Run
8:35 a.m. 5K Walk

To receive the subsidy please follow these steps:
1. Either stop by the Office of Student Activities and pick up a registration form or email Heather Masden (hmasden@rice.edu) to request one
2. Complete the registration form and return it along with a check made payable to Rice University to the Office of Student Activities, RMC Cloisters.
* Your check can be made out $5 less then the fee listed on the form. Therefore if you want to register for the competitive race your check can be made out for $30 instead of the $35 listed on the form. (Please note that the RWRC will not subsidize any fees for Sleep in for the Cure.)
3. Forms should be turned in as soon as possible but will be accepted until Wednesday, September 24th at 5pm.
Your race materials will be mailed directly to you at the address you list on your registration form.

President Leebron will hold office hours on Wednesday, September 3, from 300 pm to 4:00 pm in his office on the 4th Floor of Allen Center. No appointments are necessary. This is a way for students to convey concerns, ask questions, or just engage President Leebron in conversation.

Location: Merida, Yucatan (Mexico)
Duration: 6 nights and 7 days
Cost: $870 for premeds (flight tickets not included)

1. Football Traffic
In addition to the traffic reminder below, if you use Entrance 17 to enter or exit campus please be aware that a large tent is being set up over the two northbound traffic lanes near Gate 3 of the football stadium. This has limited both north and south traffic to one lane. On Friday morning
Entrance 17 will not open as usual; it will remain closed until after the football game.

Thousands of football fans will be heading to campus late Friday afternoon to watch the Rice Owls take on SMU in the first game of the season. Many of you will be heading in the opposite direction as you leave work. To keep the traffic moving as smoothly as possible, the University Police Department recommends that faculty and staff who are leaving campus after 4 p.m. exit through entrances 1, 2 or 3 onto Main Street. This should help prevent traffic jams at the entrances by the stadium where visitors will be arriving. If you return to campus for the game, which we encourage you to do so Rice has a great turnout for this game, please come in through entrances 8, 18 or 20. Go Owls!

Our web resources are maintained using the XCatalyst content management system. Familiarity with other content management systems such as wiki's or blogs is useful but not required. The XCatalyst system is very easy to learn and is used for all our technology needs ranging from membership management and news archives to web content management and announcements. Knowledge of HTML and photo editing software (sizing & cropping) such as Photoshop or GIMP is essential. Occasionally you will need to edit CSS documents or JavaScript.

7. Harris County Democratic Party Internships
2008 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Democrats, and Houston is no exception. The 2008 Coordinated Campaign is the Harris County Democratic Party's county-wide effort to promote and elect Democratic candidates this fall. We have built a busy and growing organization in many locations across the county, and we are now offering unpaid internship opportunities for Political Science, Public Policy, or other interested students at Rice. Our campaign will offer interns valuable and broad perspectives into the political process and how campaigns are run.
We intend to give interns hands-on experience with the day-to-day operation of our campaign - such as projects in youth and community outreach, field organization, and communications - and to minimize clerical or "busy" work. Interns are expected to be motivated and enthusiastic supporters of Democratic candidates and causes, interested in local and state politics, and willing to put forth the best professional face to the Democratic party. Good writing, communications, research, and interpersonal skills are necessary, as is familiarity with standard computer software. Familiarity with internet resources (flickr, facebook, etc.), web development, and design are also welcome.
Interns will work out of our Midtown Campaign Office (Travis & Alabama) and hours (days, nights, and weekends) are flexible. Internships will last throughout the Fall semester, and will finish after the general election in early November.

Hey there,
I graduated from Rice in May and am now working full time for Michael Skelly, who is running for Congress in Rice's district. We're offering internships for this Fall and I would love to have a couple of Rice kids be part of the campaign.
This is the most exciting Democratic campaign Houston has seen yet. We're breaking fundraising records left and right, our senior staff are incredibly talented, and we're putting in place a really intensive field program. If you're thinking at all about working or a campaign at some point, this is a great opportunity.
We're asking our interns to commit to 10 hours a week in the next seven weeks until November 4th. This can be spread between canvassing on the weekends or office work during the week and hours are flexible since we're here in the office from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm.

1. Football Traffic
In addition to the traffic reminder below, if you use Entrance 17 to enter or exit campus please be aware that a large tent is being set up over the two northbound traffic lanes near Gate 3 of the football stadium. This has limited both north and south traffic to one lane. On Friday morning
Entrance 17 will not open as usual; it will remain closed until after the football game.
Help keep traffic moving on campus Friday night -
Thousands of football fans will be heading to campus late Friday afternoon to watch the Rice Owls take on SMU in the first game of the season. Many of you will be heading in the opposite direction as you leave work. To keep the traffic moving as smoothly as possible, the University Police Department recommends that faculty and staff who are leaving campus after 4 p.m. exit through entrances 1, 2 or 3 onto Main Street. This should help prevent traffic jams at the entrances by the stadium where visitors will be arriving. If you return to campus for the game, which we encourage you to do so Rice has a great turnout for this game, please come in through entrances 8, 18 or 20. Go Owls!
