1. Understanding Hizbullah
This Thursday, April 10th, there will be a lecture at the Baker Institute at 6:30 pm by Lara Deeb. She will speak on "Understanding Hizbullah." There will be free food.
As part of the lecture series "The Arab World: History, Politics and Culture," Lara Deeb, assistant professor of women's studies at the University of California–Irvine, will discuss Lebanon's Hizbullah organization. In her lecture, "Understanding Hizbullah," Deeb will present an overview of the origins of Hizbullah and the group's development into a multifaceted political party. She will also discuss the social and cultural institutions and networks associated with the party and with its constituents in the southern suburbs of Beirut and the party's appeal for many of Lebanon's Shi'i Muslims.

This Saturday, April 12, the Flying Owls 5K Run will kick off at 8:00am and finish around 9:30am. As always, here are a few reminders that will help you move about on campus more easily:
Please keep in mind that the run will start and end at Rice Stadium near West Lot 4. Also be prepared to experience some delays as the runners traverse Rice. Pay special attention when driving in or out Entrances 8,3,1 & 1A during the event.

5. POLI SCI Experiments for Cash
My name is Christy Aroopala, and I’m a Political Science graduate student. I’m running some experiments for my thesis that pay in cash (for Rice undergrads only).
They last less than an hour and the average earning is $20-$25. You just make simple decisions and your earnings are based on your choices. All experiments take place in Fondren Library.
I’m only going to be running these experiments for one final week. Below is a list of the final sessions of the experiment.

7. 10th Annual Rice Powwow - Friday, April 11th, 5-11pm
Greetings, I hope this finds you all doing well. I am President of Rice’s Native American Student Association (RNASA) this year and wanted to tell you about our biggest event of the year, the Annual Rice Powwow. The powwow will be held at Rice University on Friday, April 11th from 5pm-11pm outside on the Intramural fields next to Autry Gym. Gourd dancing will begin around 5pm and Grand Entry is scheduled for 7pm. This year is our 10th Annual Powwow so it is a great accomplishment for RNASA to have continued to bring this event to Rice for 10 years. I am proud to have been involved with RNASA and the Annual Rice Powwow since 2001. For those of you who are not familiar with powwows, it is a Native American dance competition with several different dance and costume styles and different age groups who compete for prize money. There will also be Indian Tacos and Native American arts and crafts vendors.

Described as the "antidote to terror" by The Sunday Times (United Kingdom), Khaled, a leading advocate for moderation, was chosen in 2007 by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential individuals in the world. Khaled was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and began preaching in 1990, making it his full-time profession in 1998 when his lectures were broadcast over satellite television. He is currently the chairman of Right Start Foundation International, an organization committed to bridging cultural gaps and nurturing positive coexistence between minorities and host communities. Please join us for our weekly mad awesome discussion. This Friday the 11th @ noon in Miner Lounge (in the RMC) we will be discussing the current events surroundings the Olympics and the Politics of Tibet.

1. Is it an appropriate course of action to boycott the Olympics in Beijing in order to make a statement about China's treatment of Tibet?
2. Is there more effective method to criticize China's actions?
3. How do you think this boycott will affect the Chinese government's decisions? What about the process of the Olympics?
4. What message does the boycott send to the athletes competing in the Olympics from all countries?

LEAD 101: LEADERSHIP THEORY AND PRACTICE (TR 10:50-12:05, 3 credits)
For aspiring leaders, LEAD 101 is the place to start for understanding what leaders really do and how they do it. In this class, you will explore and assess various leadership theories and approaches, and also learn how leadership must change to fit different contexts. Armed with a theoretical framework, you will have opportunities to address contemporary leadership challenges. Take LEAD 101 and learn what types of leadership you are best suited to practice.
LEAD 101 instructor: Dr. John Kimball Kehoe received his Doctorate in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He has served on Eli Lily’s management team and currently directs the Jones School’s Action Learning Program.
LEAD 313: ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP (M 3:30-5:30, 2 credits)
It’s one thing to have a good idea, but quite another to turn that idea into a marketable product or service. Through meetings and conversations with entrepreneurial leaders in Houston, readings, discussions, and presentations, LEAD 313 will equip you to translate your ideas to action.
LEAD 313 instructor: Joel Ferguson is an entrepreneurial leader who has served as a managing partner in a worldwide management consulting firm and founded his own consulting firm in 2004. He is the former president of an award-winning restaurant chain (owners of Amazon Grill and Churrascos).
LEAD 321: LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION (MW: 11-12:30, 3 credits)
Powerful communication skills are essential for effective leadership, and LEAD 321 will equip you to articulate ideas with poise, confidence, and clarity. In this class, you will develop written, oral, interpersonal, and team skills while developing an understanding of leadership communication in different contexts, including specific fields of study. Take LEAD 321 and practice the types of communication that are required in the workplace and that will be crucial for your success.
LEAD 321 instructor: Dr. Deborah Barrett has taught and coached executives on communication for over 25 years. She has served as a senior managing director at Hill & Knowlton and as a communication consultant with McKinsey & Co.
LEAD 325: APPLIED LEADERSHIP: POWER, INFLUENCE, AND PERSUASION (MW 2-3:30, 3 credits)
Today’s leaders need a broad skill-set in order to stand out from the crowd. LEAD 325 provides opportunities to practice advanced leadership skills such as negotiation, conflict management, delegation, change management, and group facilitation, with an emphasis on supervising, motivating, and persuading others. Uncertainty regarding U.S. economic performance in the short term has greatly increased the importance of economic issues in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. As part of the Baker Institute's series on "Campaign 2008: The Issues Considered," the Tax and Expenditure Policy Program will host a discussion on the major economic issues that face the United States. The discussion will focus on several critical and contentious issues such as how to strengthen U.S. economic performance in an increasingly integrated global economy, how to reform the federal tax code in an efficient, fair and simple manner, how to effectively increase investment in education, and how to solve the long-term fiscal crisis associated with unfunded promises in the major entitlement programs.

Stephen A. Orlins, NCUSCR President, will moderate Ornstein's analysis and a real-time dialog with audiences in forty participating cities.
After the webcast, Frank Jones, Houston Forum Immediate Past Chairman, will moderate a local Town Hall discussion with Jacques deLisle, Stephan A. Cozen Professor of Law, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Steven W. Lewis, Director, Transnational China Project at the Baker Institute, and Associate Professor Hans J. I remind you that Centrale Paris Summer School 2008 will be held at Ecole Centrale Paris from May 24 to June 20.
We already have participants from Cornell University, Penn State University, York University, University of Alberta and Johns Hopkins University but Centrale Paris still has spaces available for engineering undergraduate students in its summer program.
We would be delighted to give your students the opportunity to: spend four weeks in Paris, experience life in a new and culturally reach environment and enhance their education through classes in engineering, management and French.
All courses are taught in English!
Your students can attend two or three specialized courses (3 US credit hours) and a compulsory Survival French course (1.5 credit hours). Each specialized course lasts 30hrs, French, 15 hours.

12. EMPOWER: Summer Program in Brazil on Sustainable Energy
EMPOWER: Engineering for a Sustainable Future is a unique program which explores Brazil's approach to energy, including hydroelectric power and ethanol fuel.
The EMPOWER program is centered around a three-credit course from the University of Pittsburgh and includes nine days of site visits and plant tours in Sao Paulo and Foz do Iguacu, Brazil. The course can be completed online for students who are not in the Pittsburgh area.
The EMPOWER course will be offered during the summer term, with an international trip to Brazil from August 7-17, 2008. The $3800 program fee includes:
* Tuition for the three-credit online spring semester course offered by the University of Pittsburgh
* Roundtrip international airfare between Miami and Brazil as well as travel within Brazil
* Hotel accommodations, breakfasts, transportation and cultural activities while in Brazil
* Visa fee and visa processing fee
* Medical insurance during the international portion.
Engineering or science students who are interested in issues of sustainability and clean power will be ideally suited for the program. Applicants should be juniors or returning seniors (graduating seniors will be reviewed on an individual basis). U.S. citizenship is not required for the program.

1. Is it an appropriate course of action to boycott the Olympics in Beijing in order to make a statement about China's treatment of Tibet?

Leadership Rice classes prepare you for the challenges and opportunities leaders face today. Classes are open to students of all years and majors and may be taken independently of each other.

LEAD 101: LEADERSHIP THEORY AND PRACTICE (TR 10:50-12:05, 3 credits)
For aspiring leaders, LEAD 101 is the place to start for understanding what leaders really do and how they do it. In this class, you will explore and assess various leadership theories and approaches, and also learn how leadership must change to fit different contexts. Armed with a theoretical framework, you will have opportunities to address contemporary leadership challenges. Take LEAD 101 and learn what types of leadership you are best suited to practice.
LEAD 101 instructor: Dr. John Kimball Kehoe received his Doctorate in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He has served on Eli Lily’s management team and currently directs the Jones School’s Action Learning Program.
LEAD 313: ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP (M 3:30-5:30, 2 credits)
It’s one thing to have a good idea, but quite another to turn that idea into a marketable product or service. Through meetings and conversations with entrepreneurial leaders in Houston, readings, discussions, and presentations, LEAD 313 will equip you to translate your ideas to action.
LEAD 313 instructor: Joel Ferguson is an entrepreneurial leader who has served as a managing partner in a worldwide management consulting firm and founded his own consulting firm in 2004. He is the former president of an award-winning restaurant chain (owners of Amazon Grill and Churrascos).
LEAD 321: LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION (MW: 11-12:30, 3 credits)
Powerful communication skills are essential for effective leadership, and LEAD 321 will equip you to articulate ideas with poise, confidence, and clarity. In this class, you will develop written, oral, interpersonal, and team skills while developing an understanding of leadership communication in different contexts, including specific fields of study. Take LEAD 321 and practice the types of communication that are required in the workplace and that will be crucial for your success.
LEAD 321 instructor: Dr. Deborah Barrett has taught and coached executives on communication for over 25 years. She has served as a senior managing director at Hill & Knowlton and as a communication consultant with McKinsey & Co.

Today’s leaders need a broad skill-set in order to stand out from the crowd. Take Back the Night is looking for submissions of personal stories to be read at a speak out on April 9th.
We are looking for stories that bring out of darkness and into light issues of sexual violence or assault that college students experience. Stories can be short or longer and may be in various forms: poetry, narrative, speech, etc. Stories can be read at the speak-out either by the writer or by a Take Back the Night volunteer. All stories will be kept anonymous. Email all submissions to sdesai@rice.edu DEADLINE IS MONDAY, APRIL 7 at MIDNIGHT.
The missions of Take Back the Night is to create a place free from sexual assault and violence and to promote a world where sexual violence does not occur. 4. Take Back the Night submissions- final call
Take Back the Night is looking for submissions of personal stories to be read at a speak out on April 9th.
We are looking for stories that bring out of darkness and into light issues of sexual violence or assault that college students experience. Stories can be short or longer and may be in various forms: poetry, narrative, speech, etc. Stories can be read at the speak-out either by the writer or by a Take Back the Night volunteer. All stories will be kept anonymous. Email all submissions to sdesai@rice.edu DEADLINE IS MONDAY, APRIL 7 at MIDNIGHT.
The missions of Take Back the Night is to create a place free from sexual assault and violence and to promote a world where sexual violence does not occur. By 2010, we aim to have some 7,500 corps members teaching in 33 regions. Campus campaign coordinators play a vital role in working towards this goal by joining Teach For America's effort to recruit talented and diverse college seniors to apply to our program and raise Teach For America's general visibility on campus.
Teach For America seeks outstanding undergraduate leaders to spearhead our recruitment efforts on your campus as campus campaign coordinators for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Main areas of responsibility:
*Work in consultation with the recruitment team to develop and execute an ambitious strategic plan for your campus to attract top students to Teach For America by identifying and reaching out to students and networking with professors and student organizations
*Plan and execute high-impact visits for Teach For America staff, corps members, and alumni who visit campus
*Increase Teach For America's general visibility on campus through the execution of mass publicity strategies (e-mail, campus press, hanging posters and flyers, etc.)

12. Houston Enriches Rice Education(HERE) Project-Panel Discussion
The Houston Enriches Rice Education (HERE) Project's founding Director is Anthony Pinn, the Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Humanities at Rice University. The Houston Enriches Rice Education (HERE) Project's mission is to "advances Rice's relationship to the larger Houston community and enhance faculty research and both undergraduate and graduate education. It brings the unique socio-political research materials available only in Houston to the Rice community and integrates Rice learning environments into the greater Houston area. The HERE Project builds intellectual infrastructure by creating a model for integrated learning and collaborative research. Creating new, multi-directional learning pathways between Rice and Houston will innovate Rice academic culture and Rice's relation to Houston."
As part of this project, we are sponsoring a panel discussion on the Rice campus. It will take place next Tuesday, April 8th and it addresses public education in Houston.

The Wellness Center is proud to offer UNIV 219: Survey of Sexual Violence in Our Society, a classroom dialogue in collaboration with the Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC). 12. Houston Enriches Rice Education(HERE) Project-Panel Discussion
The Houston Enriches Rice Education (HERE) Project's founding Director is Anthony Pinn, the Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Humanities at Rice University. The Houston Enriches Rice Education (HERE) Project's mission is to "advances Rice's relationship to the larger Houston community and enhance faculty research and both undergraduate and graduate education. It brings the unique socio-political research materials available only in Houston to the Rice community and integrates Rice learning environments into the greater Houston area. The HERE Project builds intellectual infrastructure by creating a model for integrated learning and collaborative research. Creating new, multi-directional learning pathways between Rice and Houston will innovate Rice academic culture and Rice's relation to Houston."
As part of this project, we are sponsoring a panel discussion on the Rice campus. It will take place next Tuesday, April 8th and it addresses public education in Houston.

Take Back the Night is looking for submissions of personal stories to be read at a speak out on April 9th.
We are looking for stories that bring out of darkness and into light issues of sexual violence or assault that college students experience. Stories can be short or longer and may be in various forms: poetry, narrative, speech, etc. Stories can be read at the speak-out either by the writer or by a Take Back the Night volunteer. All stories will be kept anonymous. Email all submissions to sdesai@rice.edu
The missions of Take Back the Night is to create a place free from sexual assault and violence and to promote a world where sexual violence does not occur. José Antonio Ocampo Gaviria is the Will Clayton Fellow in International Economics at the Baker Institute. Until mid-2007, he was the United Nations under-secretary-general for economics and social affairs. In this post he directed the United Nations' Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and chaired the United Nations' Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs. With his appointment by Kofi Annan, United Nations former secretary-general, Ocampo obtained the highest post in the history of the United Nations to be held by a Colombian.
Previously he was executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean from 1998 to 2003, and he held several government positions in his country, including minister of finance and public credit, director of the national planning department, and minister of agriculture. As an academic, he has been director of the Foundation for Higher Education and Development; professor of economics at the University of the Andes (Colombia) and the National University of Colombia; and visiting professor at Yale University and the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford. He has authored many books and articles on macroeconomic theory and policy, economic development, international trade and economic history.
Ocampo was born in Cali, Colombia, in 1952. He studied economics and sociology at the University of Notre Dame, United States, where he graduated in 1972. He earned a doctorate in economics at Yale University in 1976 and received the Alejandro Angel Escobar National Science Award in Colombia in 1988.

running some experiments for my thesis that pay in cash (for Rice undergrads
only). You just make simple decisions and your earnings are based on your
choices. The average earning is $20-$25 and they last less than an hour. All
experiments take place in Fondren Library.

Don't forget, it's only two weeks away! The Third Annual Flying Owls 5K - April 12th at Rice University!
Rice Fitness Programs' Staff and Student organizers have put together a great 5K that's set to take flight this spring. We invite you to join us for the Third Annual Flying Owls 5K at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008. Enjoy running or walking the scenic course in and around the beautiful Rice University campus.
Highlights include:
*T-shirts for all participants
*Awards given to top three male and female finishers
*Top finishers in each age bracket will also receive awards (Male and Female for every five years)
*Great music, raffle prizes, food, refreshments, and more at the post-race party
Registration is available on-line at www.rice.edu/fitness!
$15 for Rice Students
$22 for Non-Students

Preregistration deadline has been extended: Online and all main in registrations (postmarked by) April 8th.
Packet pick-up for all participants starts at 6:30 a.m. Race day registration will also be available Saturday morning, beginning at 6:45 a.m. (for $25).

11. LEARN TO DANCE for FREE!
West Coast Swing is one of the most fun and versatile social dances. It can be danced to almost any music ranging from hip hop to blues. On Sunday April 6th (the sunday of Spring Recess) there will be a FREE west coast swing workshop for beginners taught by a professional dancer Ben Hooten. Ben is 22 years old and has been dancing for 13 years.
No Partner necessary! Bring your friends! FREE!!
