10. Be a conversation partner
Rice University’s Intensive English Program, offered through the Susanne M. Glasscock
School of Continuing Studies, is recruiting Conversation Partners. We have approximately
207 students from over 38 different countries in our English as a Second Language
Program, all of whom are looking to meet native English speakers.
Our Conversation Partner Program is not a tutoring program. The main goal is our
students to be able to practice English in an informal setting. The time commitment
required may be as little as an hour a week. We will match you up with one of our
students. Where and when you meet will be decided by you and your partner. No second
language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.
Next session dates: September 8 – October 26.
If you are interested, please respond to fl@rice.edu by September 10, 2009.
Thank you for your help.

5. Crime Awareness Message
During this very busy week, safety and security may not have been uppermost in our minds. I am sure that we all have had plenty to occupy our thoughts; class work, jobs, friends, and family. As recently as last evening, we were all reminded of the need to be vigilant about protecting ourselves and our personal property.
Unfortunately, a vehicle burglary was reported to the University Police Department about 8:33 PM last night. That burglary resulted in the loss of a new (still in the box) computer belonging to one of our freshmen students. The computer was taken from the backseat of a secured and unoccupied vehicle while it was parked for only four minutes near the Brown Master’s House. The total loss was substantial not only to the freshman student, but to the upperclassman’s vehicle as his window was broken out to gain entry.
Please keep in mind these simply safety precautions to better safeguard your property and person:
Parking Lot Safety -
· Place valuables in the trunk or under the seats.
· Always lock your car, even if you leave it for a very few minutes.
· Have your keys in hand before you leave to go to your car.
· Have someone walk you to your car, especially at night.
· Use the escort service at any time when you feel uneasy or worried about getting to and from your college.
· Check your backseat before entering your car.
Personal Safety -
· Try to walk with friends when moving about, especially at night.
· Be alert to your surroundings and walk with confidence.
· Walk where the sidewalks are well lit and well traveled.
· Trust your gut. If you feel like someone is following you, go to a populated place where people can help you and then call police.
· Know where the campus emergency phones are located and do not hesitate to use them.
· Report anyone you see loitering around the colleges or academic buildings.
· Always lock your door and don't prop open your room doors, even if you are gone for a short time.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the University Police Department for any safety or security needs. You may do so by dialing 6000, (713) 348-6000, or by picking up any blue light or elevator phone. Off campus dial 911.
