3. ZipCar comes to Rice in August
Rice University students and employees have a new transportation option available on campus: use of a Toyota Prius or a Volvo S 40 through the Zipcar program.
On Tuesday, August 26th, Zip Car representatives (and free ice cream while supplies last) will be on the north side of the RMC from 10 am - 3 pm to answer questions and sign individuals up for membership. Zipcar, a car-sharing service, is an easy way to get access to a car, whether it’s for an hour or an overnight trip. The service allows members to reserve a car online or via a mobile device any time – day or night. Hourly and daily rates include gas, insurance and use of a car up to 180 miles per day.
Rice applicants must be at least 18 years old to become Zipcar members. There is a one-time $35 membership fee, and new members get a $35 driving credit (in the first 60 days of membership).

-All the serveries will be closed the evening of Friday, August 29th for the annual Sammy’s Picnic. This year the picnic will be located just outside the East side of the stadium where the student tailgating is located.
-Each college will have their own tent and area in this tailgating spot.

Cryptography is an essential tool for secure communication, computer security, and safe commercial transactions. Modern Cryptography is based for its security on unproven assumptions such as the intractability of factorization. The possible breaking of current encryptions by algorithmic innovations will entail disastrous consequences. The primary suggested method to overcome this problem is use of Quantum Cryptography. This solution is encumbered by serious practical and cost limitations. We shall describe a realization of provably unbreakable encryption within a network of computers, which is readily implemented. The presentation will be self contained and accessible to a wide audience.
Michael O. Rabin is the Thomas J. Watson Professor of computer Science at Harvard University and was the Albert Einstein Professor of Mathematics and Computer science at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
His contributions were recognized by awards including the ACM Turing Award in Computer Science, the ACM Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award, the Rothschild Prize in Exact Sciences, the IEEE Charles Babbage Award, the Harvey Prize for Science and Technology, the Israel Prize in Computer Science, and the EME’T Prize in Computer Science.
Rabin was elected as member or foreign honorary member to academies including the US National Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and a Foreign Member Royal Society. He holds honorary degrees from New York University, Haifa University, the University of Bordeaux I, Israel's Open University, Ben Gurion University, and the University of Wroclaw.

2008 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Democrats, and Houston is no exception. The 2008 Coordinated Campaign is the Harris County Democratic Party's county-wide effort to promote and elect Democratic candidates this fall. We have built a busy and growing organization in many locations across the county, and we are now offering unpaid internship opportunities for Political Science, Public Policy, or other interested students at Rice. Our campaign will offer interns valuable and broad perspectives into the political process and how campaigns are run.
We intend to give interns hands-on experience with the day-to-day operation of our campaign — such as projects in youth and community outreach, field organization, and communications — and to minimize clerical or "busy" work. Interns are expected to be motivated and enthusiastic supporters of Democratic candidates and causes, interested in local and state politics, and willing to put forth the best professional face to the Democratic party. Good writing, communications, research, and interpersonal skills are necessary, as is familiarity with standard computer software. Familiarity with internet resources (flickr, facebook, etc.), web development, and design are also welcome.
Interns will work out of our Midtown Campaign Office (Travis & Alabama) and hours (days, nights, and weekends) are flexible. Internships will last throughout the Fall semester, and will finish after the general election in early November.

We're looking to hire a computer-savvy undergrad student to help us throughout the school year (and possibly summer) in the Jones School's Finance Center (stock trading floor).
Pay starts at $12/hr, hours will be very flexible, and will be no more than 10 hours per week. Candidates would be eager to work with state-of-the-art computer hardware and would be self-directed. Work would include computer setup and maintenance, web design and development, and other tasks related to upkeep of a server room and a computer lab.
Preferred majors are comp sci and elec, though most important is a working knowledge of computers. Interest in the world of business and finance is a plus - the position will be a great resume-building opportunity with hands-on experience with industry-standard computer hardware and finance applications.

7. Basket Cleanout- Spring and Summer
If you currently have a basket registered in your name at the Recreation Center, please kindly remove your personal items and lock if you are not going to be on campus beyond MAY 9, 2008. The Recreation Center will be closed May 10 and 11 for graduation and will not be accessible, so please plan ahead. However, if you are planning to stick out another HOT summer here in Houston, you will have until AUGUST 1 to remove all personal items and locks. With renovations continuing at a rapid pace, there is not place for us to store any personal items left behind prior to annual maintenance.
All locks left behind will be cut and items discarded. Upon returning to campus in the fall, you will be able to reclaim the same basket. To assure your personals remain YOUR personals, and your lock remains yours, please allow ample time to empty your basket. The AAPG and SEG student chapters from the Earth Science department at Rice University are co-hosting a panel on "Peak Oil and Future Challenges" on Wednesday, April 30, 5:30 - 7:30 PM at the Biology Auditorium. If you currently have a basket registered in your name at the Recreation Center, please kindly remove your personal items and lock if you are not going to be on campus beyond MAY 9, 2008. The Recreation Center will be closed May 10 and 11 for graduation and will not be accessible, so please plan ahead. However, if you are planning to stick out another HOT summer here in Houston, you will have until AUGUST 1 to remove all personal items and locks. With renovations continuing at a rapid pace, there is not place for us to store any personal items left behind prior to annual maintenance.
All locks left behind will be cut and items discarded. Upon returning to campus in the fall, you will be able to reclaim the same basket. To assure your personals remain YOUR personals, and your lock remains yours, please allow ample time to empty your basket. Done with finals? Would you like to make some extra cash? Wonder-Space is a group of educational consultants (Rice Alumni) that provide tutoring services to students in the Houston area. We're currently looking for tutors that can take on some clients in the next couple weeks through the end of May. We tutor everyone including elementary students, college, and adults returning to education after many years. Pay is $12-20/hr, depending on experience. Earn more for tutoring done in clients' homes. Hours are flexible (work from 2-20hrs/week)!
Our tutors are all outgoing, exceptionally smart, and have excellent teaching and communication skills. They serve as role models and mentors to students while motivating and challenging them in various subjects. The office atmosphere is lively, energetic, and very conducive for growth potential. Most of our tutors are Rice University college students, and we prefer to get more, but other university students--please apply!

Math (elementary, middle school, Algebra I/II, Geometry, Pre-Cal,Calculus)
Science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics)

4. Linda Williams Prize for Social Justice
Robin Forman, Dean of Undergraduates, solicits your assistance in nominating the first recipient of the Linda Faye Williams Social Justice Prize.
Rice established the Linda Faye Williams Social Justice Prize to recognize work that furthers social justice and enables understanding across boundaries of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, class, nationality, sexual orientation and ideology.
The award is named for the late Linda Faye Williams '70, one of the first two black undergraduate students to enter Rice and earn a bachelor's degree after the university abandoned its charter provision that limited enrollment to white students. Williams died October 16, 2006, at the age of 57.
Williams was a professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland and a highly regarded expert on race and gender politics. She also held positions with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Her most recent book, "Constraint of Race: Legacies of White Skin Privilege in America," won three national book awards, including the American Political Science Association's selection as the year's best book on race, ethnicity and politics.

The conference brings together senior policymakers, economists, academic specialists and industry professionals to discuss the geopolitical risks currently facing international energy markets and the global financial system. It also investigates the consequences that such risks could pose to energy security, pricing and supply, as well as to the transparent and smooth operation of the global market for oil and natural gas trade and investment. At the conference, the Baker Institute will release a new energy study titled "The Global Energy Market: Comprehensive Strategies to Meet Geopolitical and Financial Risks." By analyzing these key geopolitical threats in depth, the study identifies a series of policy frameworks that can be used to fortify the current market system and ensure that it can respond flexibly to the array of threats that might be encountered in the coming years. The study also examines the impact of emerging climate policy on future U.S. foreign and national energy policy.

You might ask, so why is HKSA selling boba tea? Isn't it a Taiwanese thing? Indeed it is of Taiwanese origin, but it is so widespread in Asia, especially in Hong Kong, such that you can find it at nearly every corner of the city. Hong Kongers call it Pearl Tea (since tapioca looks like pearls), and it tastes slightly different, but on Tuesday, HKSA will be selling Bubble Tea straight from Teahouse to cool you off before the start of final's week! Last semester, we sold Red Bean Ice, another HK delicacy, and this semester, we offer another HK drink - Pearl/Boba Tea.

4. Linda Williams Prize for Social Justice
Robin Forman, Dean of Undergraduates, solicits your assistance in nominating the first recipient of the Linda Faye Williams Social Justice Prize.
Rice established the Linda Faye Williams Social Justice Prize to recognize work that furthers social justice and enables understanding across boundaries of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, class, nationality, sexual orientation and ideology.
The award is named for the late Linda Faye Williams '70, one of the first two black undergraduate students to enter Rice and earn a bachelor's degree after the university abandoned its charter provision that limited enrollment to white students. Williams died October 16, 2006, at the age of 57.
Williams was a professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland and a highly regarded expert on race and gender politics. She also held positions with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Her most recent book, "Constraint of Race: Legacies of White Skin Privilege in America," won three national book awards, including the American Political Science Association's selection as the year's best book on race, ethnicity and politics.

This Spring we had a really good turnout, and the workshops were held in the Space Science building. Not only did we have a chance to motivate them through presentations and giving information, but we also got to know them better by eating dinner with them. It was truly an awesome experience to see their excitement and enthusiasm for their life direction, and I hope you can join us for this experience!

7. ISP to Guatemala Car Wash
The Community Involvement Center's 2008 International Service Project (ISP) to Guatemala is sponsoring a Car Wash on Friday, April 18, from 3:00-6:00pm behind the Campus Police Station. If all the pollen has gotten to be too much for your car, stop by one your way home from work for a quick wash. The cost is $5.00/car and payment is accepted in the form of cash or check made out to "Rice University/CIC Service Council." This May the Community Involvement Center will sponsor its twelfth annual International Service Project (ISP). For two weeks, fourteen students will be immersed in the rich Guatemalan culture while working alongside the indigenous Mayan citizens. The focus of the group's volunteer efforts are with a mission in San Lucas Toliman, on the banks of Lake Toliman in the Solola region. The Catholic mission with whom the students work is dedicated to helping the indigenous Mayans gain back their land rights. The students are extremely excited about this once in a lifetime opportunity to interact and learn from another culture through community service.
The students will participate in a number of service projects including reforestation, coffee harvesting and processing, and construction. In addition, the group will have daily interactions with the citizens of the region. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the history and politics of Guatemala, including the legacy of the peace agreement which was signed in 1996, ending a three-decade-long armed conflict. Each area will be covered by an advisory group of Rice undergraduates, who will be preparing materials and a presentation for the group of selected students. After each presentation, four students will be assigned to one Rice advisor to answer any personal questions.
This Spring we had a really good turnout, and the workshops were held in the Space Science building. Not only did we have a chance to motivate them through presentations and giving information, but we also got to know them better by eating dinner with them. It was truly an awesome experience to see their excitement and enthusiasm for their life direction, and I hope you can join us for this experience!

7. ISP to Guatemala Car Wash
The Community Involvement Center's 2008 International Service Project (ISP) to Guatemala is sponsoring a Car Wash on Friday, April 18, from 3:00-6:00pm behind the Campus Police Station. If all the pollen has gotten to be too much for your car, stop by one your way home from work for a quick wash. The cost is $5.00/car and payment is accepted in the form of cash or check made out to "Rice University/CIC Service Council." This May the Community Involvement Center will sponsor its twelfth annual International Service Project (ISP). For two weeks, fourteen students will be immersed in the rich Guatemalan culture while working alongside the indigenous Mayan citizens. The focus of the group's volunteer efforts are with a mission in San Lucas Toliman, on the banks of Lake Toliman in the Solola region. The Catholic mission with whom the students work is dedicated to helping the indigenous Mayans gain back their land rights. The students are extremely excited about this once in a lifetime opportunity to interact and learn from another culture through community service.
The students will participate in a number of service projects including reforestation, coffee harvesting and processing, and construction. In addition, the group will have daily interactions with the citizens of the region. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the history and politics of Guatemala, including the legacy of the peace agreement which was signed in 1996, ending a three-decade-long armed conflict. Please join the Relay For Life of Houston-Texas Medical Center on Friday, April 18 from 7:00 pm - 7:00 am at Rice University's Track and Soccer Stadium!
Relay For Life, the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, is a community gathering open to all and designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer, to celebrate survivors and to remember those who have died. The event is held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps. The night will be filled with entertainment, food and the Luminaria Ceremony.

1. Take Me Out to the Ballgame
The Rice Student Association, Rice Program Council, and Student Athletic Advisory Committee invite YOU to sneak away from Fondren for a few hours to come celebrate Rice Baseball with us!! We will be hosting Take Me Out to the Ballgame on April 18, 2008. The event will take place from 4:30 - 6:15 in front of Reckling Park, right before the scheduled 6:30 game verse East Carolina.
The serveries will be shut down for dinner that evening. Each residential college will have a grill set up, and members of the football team will be grilling burgers and veggie burgers.
SAAC will be hosting numerous games/prize raffles on the Tennis Courts at Jake Hess Stadium (located right in front of Reckling Park). Games will include:
-Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby
-Speed Throw (Rader Gun Competition)

8. Conflict of Interest Policy Workshop April 16
President Leebron recently signed Policy No. 838 that addresses many issues concerning conflict of interest among staff, and the necessary steps that must be taken to identify and manage such conflicts. The accountability for communicating and administering the policy for each Rice department rests with the chairs and managers responsible for each department. In order to assist chairs and managers in effectively carrying out the policy, the General Counsel's office and the Human Resources office are presenting a one-hour workshop in the Farnsworth Room of the Ley Student Center, at three different times during the month of April. Hubbert’s Peak, The Coal Question, and Climate Change

There is a vigorous debate now about whether our oil, natural gas, and coal resources will be sufficient in the future. At the same time, there is an intense effort to predict the changes in climate that will result from consuming these fossil fuels. There has been surprisingly little effort to connect these two. Do we have a fossil-fuel supply problem? Do we have a climate-change problem? Do we have both? Which comes first? We will see that the trend for future fossil-fuel production is less than what is assumed in the United Nations climate-change assessments. The implication is that an understanding of producer limitations could help us do a better job of predicting climate change. We will also see that the time scale for exhausting fossil fuels is much smaller than that for global temperature change. This means that it is critical to reduce the total fossil-fuel production, not just slow it down. One possible approach for reducing total production would be to establish fossil-fuel preserves on federal lands that would be off limits for new leases for drilling and mining.

He is the inventor of more than 20 issued patents, with about thirty more pending in the US and internationally. 8. Conflict of Interest Policy Workshop April 16
President Leebron recently signed Policy No. 838 that addresses many issues concerning conflict of interest among staff, and the necessary steps that must be taken to identify and manage such conflicts. The accountability for communicating and administering the policy for each Rice department rests with the chairs and managers responsible for each department. In order to assist chairs and managers in effectively carrying out the policy, the General Counsel's office and the Human Resources office are presenting a one-hour workshop in the Farnsworth Room of the Ley Student Center, at three different times during the month of April. The schedule is below. I strongly encourage all chairs, managers, and supervisors to please attend one the sessions. No RSVP is required.

Hubbert’s Peak, The Coal Question, and Climate Change

There is a vigorous debate now about whether our oil, natural gas, and coal resources will be sufficient in the future. At the same time, there is an intense effort to predict the changes in climate that will result from consuming these fossil fuels. There has been surprisingly little effort to connect these two. Do we have a fossil-fuel supply problem? Do we have a climate-change problem? Do we have both? Which comes first? We will see that the trend for future fossil-fuel production is less than what is assumed in the United Nations climate-change assessments. The implication is that an understanding of producer limitations could help us do a better job of predicting climate change. We will also see that the time scale for exhausting fossil fuels is much smaller than that for global temperature change. This means that it is critical to reduce the total fossil-fuel production, not just slow it down. One possible approach for reducing total production would be to establish fossil-fuel preserves on federal lands that would be off limits for new leases for drilling and mining.

Mauro Ferrari serves as Professor at the Brown Institute of Molecular Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Professor of Experimental Therapeutics at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Professor of Bioengineering at Rice University, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Texas Medical Branch and President of the Alliance for NanoHealth.
Dr. Mauro Ferrari is a founder of the field of biomedical nano/micro-technology, especially in their applications to drug delivery, cell transplantation, implantable bioreactors, and other innovative therapeutic modalities. In these fields, he has published more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles and six books. He is the inventor of more than 20 issued patents, with about thirty more pending in the US and internationally. His contributions have been recognized by a variety of accolades, including: the Presidential Young Investigator Award of the National Science Foundation; the Shannon Director’s Award of the National Institutes of Health; the Wallace H. Coulter Award for Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and the Marzio Tremaglia Italiani nel Mondo Award from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

KTRU is looking for new DJs to start this summer term! If you’ll be around campus or have a summer job in Houston, this is the perfect time to pick up a new, awesome activity! No experience is necessary. If you're unfamiliar with the technical aspects of DJing, don't worry-- we'll train you from scratch! If you're not sure you're enough of a music guru to DJ, don't worry-- KTRU wants DJs who simply have an open mind and a desire to learn more about different kinds of music!

15. The Academy of American Poets: Deadline- Friday April 18
Dear Rice Undergraduates,
The Academy of American Poets prize committee at Rice University is currently accepting submissions for the 2007-08 poetry contest. Any current undergraduate is eligible to submit up to two (2) poems for judging. The first-place poem will receive $100 from the Academy of American Poets, and runners-up will be recognized with honorable mention. Submissions must be turned in (hard copies only) to the English Department on the 2nd Floor of Herring Hall by 5 pm on Friday, April 18th.
