1. 2008 Thanksgiving Shuttle to Hobby Airport
The Transportation and Parking Department will provide free shuttle service to the Hobby Airport only on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 as follows:

Departure from circular drive outside the Student Center (RMC).

9 am, 10:30 am, 12 pm, 1:30 pm, 3 pm, 4:30pm


On Sunday November 30, 2008, the shuttle will pick up students returning to Rice University.

Pickup time from Hobby Airport is as follows:

1 pm, 2:30 pm, 4 pm, 5:30 pm, 7 pm, 8:30 pm.

4. Rice ESL Conversation Partner Program
Rice University’s Intensive English Program, offered through the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, is recruiting Conversation Partners. We have approximately 195 students from over 30 different countries in our English as a Second Language Program, all of whom are looking to meet native English speakers.

Our Conversation Partner Program is not a tutoring program. The main goal is our students to be able to practice English in an informal setting. The time commitment required may be as little as an hour a week. We will match you up with one of our students. Where and when you meet will be decided by you and your partner. No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn about other cultures.

Our next session dates: October 30 – December 18.

5. Annual Rice Intramural Golf Tournament
Rice Intramural Sports will be hosting its 12th Annual Golf Tournament at Clear Creek Golf course on Oct. 25th. All faculty/staff and students are encouraged to participate! This event is a 4-man scramble with an 8 A.M. shotgun start. Intramural Sports will be covering most of the cost but there will be a small entry fee of $20.00 for faculty/staff and $15.00 for all students. This nominal fee covers green and cart fees, range balls, and all door and placement prizes. The top three teams will receive prizes as well as individual contest winners (longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt). 8. Lost iPhone - $100 reward
This past weekend I recently lost my phone on campus, more specifically the area bounded by Baker, Sid Rich and Hanszen. I know someone found the phone as I combed through the grass for 4 hours within an hour of losing it off my belt. The phone is a White iPhone and it was in a black belt clip case that was leather and had a flap at the top with velcro (you can see it's white through small openings in the case). My ID card was also in the case. It's essential that I find this phone so I ask if anyone found it if they could return it for a generous reward of $100 dollars. The phone is passcode locked anyway. About the event:

In partnership with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office – Houston, the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts, Film Program takes a look at Taiwanese New Wave Cinema through a selection of films by legendary director Hou Hsiao-hsien. This film series includes an opening night reception and panel discussion. All events are free and open to the public and will take place in the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts, Rice Media Center building. For more information, see the schedule below.

About Hou Hsiao-hsien:

Hou Hsiao-hsien was born in Mei County, Guangdong Province, China in 1947. He and his family fled the Chinese Civil War to Taiwan the following year. Hou was educated at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. Hou generally makes rigorously minimalist dramas dealing with the upheavals of Taiwanese (and occasionally larger Chinese) history of the past century by viewing its impacts on individuals or small groups of characters.

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s magnificent 1989 film A City of Sadness brings to light the truth about the 1947 massacre known as “the 228 incident.” Winner of the Golden Lion Award at the 1989 Venice Film Festival, A City of Sadness treats one of the key issues of Taiwanese history, yet it is not a political film. It focuses, not on the bloodshed, but on the consequences for a particular family and how individual experience is impacted by the flow of time and history.

This is a compelling Taiwanese drama about a wistful schoolgirl (Yang Lin) who is peripherally involved in a teenaged crime ring. She escapes from the harshness of her surrounding reality by reading her favorite comic books, “Daughter of the Nile.” Despite its inherent whimsical nature, the film is a straight-on look at urban decay in modern Taiwan. Daughter of the Nile was originally released as Nilouhe Nuer. Panel discussion follows the film.

3. ZIPCAR
The Zipcar program was successfully launched yesterday. For those who have not heard about the program, Zipcar, a car-sharing service, is an easy way to get access to a car, whether it's for an hour or an overnight trip. The service allows members to reserve a car on line or via a mobile device any time - day or night. Hourly rate of $7 and daily rate of $60 include gas, insurance and use of the car up to 180 miles per day.

Rice University applicants must be at least 18 years old to become Zipcar members. There is a $35 annual membership fee and new members receive a $35 credit in the first 60 days.

I would like to report that the second car (Volvo S40) is scheduled to arrive today and will be available for service tomorrow. The other car is a Toyota Prius. Both cars are parked centrally on campus in the Baker College lot. To learn more about the Zipcar program, please visit www.zipcar.com/rice.

Distinguished among scientists working at the cutting edge of physics, Sylvester James Gates Jr. has helped introduce scientific concepts to the public through a number of PBS television programs, including "The Elegant Universe" and "Einstein's Big Idea," and in the popular DVD lecture collection, "Superstring Theory: The DNA of Reality."

Gates has served on the faculties of MIT, Howard University, the California Institute of Technology and the University of Maryland. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the American Physical Society, which named him the first recipient of the Bouchet Award; and the National Society of Black Physicists, of which he is a past president. Earlier this year he participated in a number of events at the World Science Festival in New York City, including the "Beyond Einstein" panel.

His awards include the MIT Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award, the Klopsteg Award of the American Association of Physics Teachers and an award, previously given to Carl Sagan, from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Enviro Club is participating in a screening of "EVERYTHING'S COOL" by the Clean Group! Come and watch :)

Join CLEAN as we feature /EVERYTHING'S COOL/ , a film about America finally "getting" global warming in the wake of the most dangerous chasm ever to emerge between scientific understanding and political action. While industry funded nay-sayers sing what just might be their swan song of pseudo- scientific deception, a group of global warming messengers are on a high stakes quest to find the iconic image, the magic language, the points of leverage that will finally create the political will to move the United States from its reliance on fossil fuels to the new clean energy economy - AND FAST.

If Rice undergraduate students need to take a bus or ride METRORail to
downtown (or to the connect to the direct to IAH bus service) free Metro Q
Card are available from the Cashier's Office. Please note that cards that
were issued last year were cancelled by Metro. Simply having a Metro card in
your possession does not mean that you can board a bus or METRORail without
tapping your card. If a METRO officer is checking for tickets, they will ask
to scan your card. If it hasn't been tapped you will still receive a fine.

1. Bike Bell Issues
The bike committee received complaints of the bike bells not holding tight enough on the handle bars. Carolie Allgood, the co-chairperson for the committee, did some checking and discovered that there should have been a red screw in the package, which was left out when they were imprinted. We now have those screws and they will be available at the Transportation Fair (we will have people there to put them on for you) and at the police department after that. We apologize for the confusion and hope to reach all those who have received bells and correct the issue.

2. International Refugee Aid
Hello Rice Students. I am Matt Campbell, College Orientation Day Officer for Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees (PAIR). Every semester, PAIR brings a group of refugees onto the Rice campus for lunch, a speaker, a campus tour, and an opportunity to meet and talk with student groups, as part of our broader initiative in motivating the refugees to pursue higher education. The event shows refugees the broad range of opportunities available to the refugees, and helps us to recruit a number of refugees into our other programs, such as college prep and after school mentoring.
We have a large group of newly arrived Iraqi and Bumese refugees, and would love to start them on their path to higher education and a successful life in this country.

Wednesday, October 8 @ 8pm in the Grad Lounge in the RMC
David Atwood of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty will speak before the film.

At the Death House Door is a personal and intimate look at the death penalty in the State of Texas through the eyes of Pastor Carroll Pickett, who served 15 years as the death house chaplain to the infamous "Walls" prison unit in Huntsville. During Pickett's remarkable career journey, he presided over 95 executions, including the world's first lethal injection.

The film also focuses on the story of Carlos De Luna, a convict Pickett counseled and whose execution troubled Pickett more than any other.

8. Seeking a director for Rice Players spring production
The Rice Players are seeking a student director for their spring production. The show will run in the first week of February. The three plays that the coordinators are currently considering are:

1. The Recreation Center Would Like to Thank You
Rice community,
I would like to thank everyone for their patience during yesterday's building closure; the Recreation Center reopened at 6am this morning resuming its normal operating hours. The current temporary entrance into the facility is through the East Gym side door, located adjacent to Field 7 (field with lights), just north of the recreation tennis courts. This entrance is expected to be in use for approximately two weeks.
Please remember to bring your ID to the building for any and all classes and activities. The card reader will be on the table to your left once you enter the facility. Also, in order to provide a safe and convenient entrance/egress into our building, please refrain from parking and/or locking your bicycle to the handrails on the East Gym ramp. You are welcome to continue using the bicycle racks located by the old Recreation Center entrance.

3. Refugee Info Session & Training with PAIR
DID YOU KNOW??

The United States accepts about 60,000 refugees each year from the Congo, Burundi, Iraq, Turkey, and lots of other countries?
A huge proportion of these refugees are resettled HERE - in Houston. And they need your help adjusting to life in the States!

PAIR is a Rice student-run nonprofit that organizes lots of weekly educational activities for refugee kids of all ages. If you're looking for ways to volunteer outside the hedges and work in an amazingly intercultural setting, PAIR is a great way to start!

4. Interested in Neuroscience?
Hey Everyone!

While Rice offers a Cog Sci major, there is no particular focus on
Neuroscience. Several students and I, as well as some great faculty, have decided that we would like to initiate a Neuroscience minor at Rice University.

There are many steps involved in this process, but we hope that with time we will be able to work it out.

The first step is to see how many students are interested and so this is where you come in.

If you are genuinely interested in Neuroscience and would like to take neuroscience courses here at Rice, please join the Facebook group Neuroscience Minor at Rice so that we can get a count. Also, by joining, you will get access to information regarding upcoming Neuroscience conferences and lectures.

If you would like to be active in this process and help out, please email me in addition to joining the group. A group of us will meet with faculty every two weeks at lunch, alternating between the north and south colleges.

A Rice undergraduate student replied to a phishing email with their Rice account and password information on Oct. 2. The student's Rice email account was then used to distribute even more phishing messages before IT locked the account. NO ONE at Rice will ever ask you for your password by email. Do not reply to emails that ask for your passwords.

"Visualizing Texts, Modeling History: Possibilities for Digital Scholarship in the Humanities."

How does the growth of digital information affect how research is done in the humanities? What kind of careers are available that marry an understanding of information technology and humanities research methods? Lisa Spiro will discuss the emerging field of digital humanities, offering examples of compelling work being done now in text mining, information visualization, and scholarly publication.
Lisa Spiro graduated from Rice with a BA in English in 1992, and received her PhD from the University of Virginia in 2002. She is the Director of the Digital Media Center at Rice University and the Educational Technology Research and Assessment Cooperative.


This event is presented as part of the Humanities Research Center's yearlong series "Big Questions and Future Directions in the Humanities", which seeks to show undergraduates the wide range of career options available to students who graduate with a degree in the Humanities.

8. Coffeehouse Installation Art Submissions
Hey Rice!

Do you want to see your art in the Student Center? If so, Coffeehouse is looking for a student to create an installation art piece in the corner of the Student Center beside our couches (where the white paper installation piece is currently). If you are interested, we would love to see a short proposal including your plan, a basic budget, and drawings or photographs to illustrate your idea. 9. NNO rock climbing trophy
As a part of the Rice University National Night Out program, there will be a 3 sided rock climbing wall. As a part of the fun we will offer a trophy to the college or department whose team competes and accomplishes their climb in the shortest time. RUPD will be registering a team for competition as well. The rules are fairly simple and are posted below. Any college or department who wishes to field a team should register their names by noon on Monday, October 6, 2008. To register a team, simply determine your three champions, and email your team roster to Hassell@rice.edu. Only one team per college or department will be admitted for the competition. I think that trophy will look good in the RUPD lobby!
1. Each team will consist of three climbers. All climbers must be a current member of the College or department represented.
2. Each team must consist of at least one male and one female.
3. Each team will select the member who will climb the easy wall, another to climb the medium wall, and the third to climb the hard wall.
4. The scores will be combined from the three climbs and the lowest cumulative time will determine the winner.
A trophy will be presented to the 1st place team.

10. Sally Ride Science is coming to Houston!
The Rice Space Institute is once again hosting the Sally Ride Science Festival on campus, Saturday, October 18, 2008 to be held in the Engineering Quad and workshops in various classrooms on campus.

Once again, we are in great need of volunteers. The volunteer shifts are:

Shift #1 9AM - 4:15PM
Shift #2 9AM - 1:00PM
Shift #3 11AM - 4:15PM
The morning shift volunteers help us set up our street fair, check in girls,
hand out lunches and help at our slime booth. Afternoon shift folks act as
mother duckies and lead the girls to and from their workshops. All day
volunteers get to do both.

We are happy to announce that Astronaut Peggy Whitson (Rice alumna) is giving the featured talk. Read more about her:

Peggy Whitson

Peggy is a biochemistry researcher and astronaut. Currently, Peggy is NASA's most experienced astronaut with just over 376 days in space. She also has performed a total of six spacewalks, more than any other female astronaut. Peggy was named the first NASA Science Officer during her first space flight. During that flight, she conducted investigations in human life sciences and microgravity sciences. For her second flight, the Expedition 16, Peggy was named commander and oversaw the first expansion of the International Space Station's living and working space in six years.
Peggy received her bachelor of science degree in biology/chemistry from Iowa Wesleyan and her doctorate in biochemistry from Rice. Following her graduation, Peggy worked for the NASA Johnson Space Center for the Biochemistry Research Group and as a Project Scientist of the Shuttle-Mir Program. Later, she worked as a professor at Rice University in the Maybee Laboratory for Biochemical and Genetic Engineering.
Peggy has been awarded the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and a NASA Space Flight Medal. She has two patents approved as well.

The Professional Development Advisors (PDAs) at are pleased to offer scheduled office hours to provide you with the following support:

14. Improved Shuttle Service
In order to improve shuttle service to the north colleges, effective Monday October 6, 2008, the Graduate Apartments route
will be changed to enter campus through entrance 27B (inbound direction only).
Two additional shuttle stops will be available (Wellness Center and O'Connor House). The Graduate Apartments service
will operate Monday to Friday, 7:30am-10:45pm every 15 minutes.

As hopefully all of you know, this Friday, October 3rd is one of Rice's most hallowed traditions: SCREW YER ROOMMATE presented by the Rice Program Council. It's your call. But either way you're sure to have a good time...or at least a good story.

We've really tried to amp up the meeting process in the quad this year. So show up and in costume at 6:00 sharp for music and a taste of the new Red Bull Cola. Other goodies will also be furnished by Red Bull. Following the date (for better or worse) will be the traditional after party at pub from 10-2.

Expect to see shirts with a new and improved variety of colors for sale this week by your faithful college RPC rep. Buy one or collect them all. But no matter what, everybody participate!

8. Exit Polling
Professor Robert Stein of the Political Science Department is looking for student pollsters to conduct exit polling of early and Election Day voters in Harris County. Students will work six hour shifts, and receive pay of 75-100 dollars. You can sign up for as many days as you would like, and no previous experience is needed. The only catch: students must provide their own transportation to and from the polling sites (Zipcars, anyone?).
