4. ACLU Internship in Washington DC
Rice undergrad-only Summer Opportunity: Paid ($8,000) ACLU Internship in Washington DC
Each summer, Rice sends one student to the Washington DC Legislative ACLU office. If selected for this internship, you will receive an $8,000 stipend.
This internship is designed to give a student the opportunity to experience, first hand, the workings of a full-service national legislative office. Interns will have the opportunity to attend congressional hearings and press briefings; assist in field organizing and grassroots operations; track current events relating to civil liberty issues; monitor state political and judicial developments that may impact national ACLU legislative initiatives.
-Applicants must have excellent research and communications skills, both oral and written.
-A strong interest in civil liberties.
-Interests in policy, the legislative process and current events are preferred.

Do you have a secret you've never told anyone?
OPEN, Rice's first literary sex magazine, invites you to share your secret- anonymously.
These can be embarrassing, shocking, secretive, hopeful, artistic, or anything. It can be about sex, love, relationships, all the topics OPEN deals with. Create a postcard with your secret and drop it off in one of the PostSecret envelopes!
PostSecret is an online project by Frank Warren where people send in their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard. The blog is updated every Sunday with new secrets. And, we are bringing this phenomenal project to Rice.
The Postsecret collection envelopes are located near the coordinator's office in each college, and at the Coffeehouse in the RMC. Collection time for each college is listed on the envelope. Selected secrets will be published this upcoming issue of OPEN.

Last year Hanszen College's Spring Dance Concert raised over $500 for the Houston Ballet's Education and Outreach Department. The even was well attended and showcased original choreography from Rice students. Participation in the the Spring Dance Concert is not a large time commitment, with occasional meetings for planning the event and collaborating on choreography, and rehersals the week of the event which is tentatively scheduled for March 27th and 28th.

Texas is the death capital of the world. There are 10 executions scheduled from now until April, 6 of them in January alone. Rice for Peace is going to be raising awareness about the Texas death penalty and asking students to take action. Throughout the semester, we will be setting up a table in the RMC on the date of each execution to raise awareness and petition all members of the Rice community. On Jan 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, Feb 4, 10, 12, March 3, 4, 10 and April 7 we call on you to contact Texas governor Rick Perry 800-252-9600 and demand a death penalty moratorium. If you're interested in volunteering and helping us lobby our local representatives, email us at activism@.

11. John E. Parish Fellowship for Summer Travel
Wiess College announces competition for the 2009 John E. Parish Fellowship. The winner of the Parish Fellowship will receive support of approximately 2 months travel during the Summer of 2009. The purpose of the fellowship is to enhance the undergraduate education of the Fellow by broadening the range of experience via individual travel. 2. Student Director of Orientation Applications Due Wednesday
This is a reminder that the Applications for Student Director of Orientation for 2009 are now available. Because our residential college community will be expanding with the addition of Duncan and McMurtry colleges, it will be even more important that we find a strong, dynamic student leader to serve in this important role.
The deadline for the application isWednesday, January 14th at 5:00 p.m. in the Dean of Undergraduates Office, Lovett hall, entrance A. It is not required that applicants have served as O-Week Coordinators before, but it will certainly help them if they have been involved in some element of O-Week, whether that means advising/co-advising, serving as PAA or in some other capacity. If you have any questions about the position, please do not hesitate to contact me. Should any students have additional questions about the position or simply want to speak with someone who knows the "ins and outs" of the position, please direct them to the 2008 O-Week Student Director, Megan Hermance. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are in high demand for mapping and analysis. Learn basic instruction on a variety of GIS topics and register for free short-courses offered by the GIS/Data Center at Fondren Library. 4. Become an EMT or Get CPR Certified
Rice EMS is currently accepting applications from certified EMTs who wish to become part of REMS. Applications will be due Friday (16 January) at 5pm with the RUPD Dispatcher. Applicants will also need to be able to attend a skills and protocol testing session on Saturday 31 January and an orientation on Sunday 1 February. Interested applicants should email Captain Michael Pandya at rems@rice.edu with any questions or to receive a copy of the application.
Rice EMS is also offering CPR classes this semester. Classes can be scheduled at a variety of times and can accommodate up to 30 students. Courses follow the American Heart Association Adult CPR curriculum, and can include AEDs, first aid, and child/infant CPR if desired. Spanish-speaking instructors and Spanish course materials are also available. Classes usually run between 3-5 hours depending on the number of topics covered and the number of students in the course. If you would like to schedule a CPR class for your college, department, or organization, please send an email to rems-education@rice.edu with the approximate number of students and a few potential course times. As always, CPR classes are free for students, faculty, and staff.

Program highlights:
· Interns will be staffed on actual cases to work on the most pressing issues faced by leading companies. Interns work as members of case teams in roles that vary by the team's objective, but are typically responsible for data gathering and analysis, interviewing the client's customers, competitors, and suppliers, and presenting the findings to case team members.

There’s more to doing research on the web than typing a few keywords into Google. As the Web has evolved, it has become a more powerful platform for finding and organizing information, sharing knowledge, and presenting ideas in an interactive, dynamic way. By using free Web 2.0 tools and resources such as those cataloged at Digital Research Tools (http://digitalresearchtools.pbwiki.com/), researchers can conduct, manage and disseminate research more effectively. This workshop will provide an overview to some of the most compelling Web 2.0 applications particularly relevant for researchers, such as:
* Constructing effective searches

* Managing and sharing citations using del.icio.us
* Creating bibliographies using Zotero

Managing citations can be a real pain—you have to either type or copy and paste bibliographic information, keep up with the source of each quotation, and worry about formatting your bibliography properly. Enter Zotero (http://www.zotero.org), which bills itself as “a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives right where you do your work — in the web browser itself.” With Zotero, a tool designed by scholars for scholars, you can automatically download citation information, store PDFs of articles, add keywords to make your sources easy to find, search your research collections, and automatically create bibliographies and footnotes as you write. Zotero's simplicity and power have earned it praise from Inside Higher Education and PC Magazine, as well as countless enthusiastic researchers. This hands-on workshop will introduce some of the key functions of Zotero. By investing a couple of hours to learn Zotero, you can save yourself from spending countless hours trying to remember where you put that article and doing data entry and formatting.

Through podcasting, you can make it easy for audiences to download and listen to lectures, performances, or your own musings; all you need is simple (and free) audio editing software, a decent microphone, and access to a web server. In this course on podcasting, you will learn what a podcast is, how to record, edit and enhance the underlying audio, and how to make your podcast available online.

Are you an amateur photographer who would like to take your skills to the next level? Mystified by all the special features that your digital camera offers? This free short course teaches photography basics, camera adjustments, and techniques on choosing different types of cameras. It will cover photographic terms such as aperture, shutter speed, iso, and exposure. It will also discuss camera scene mode selections, exposure compensation, priority shooting modes, etc., as well as look at the differences between DSLR and Point & Shoot cameras.

Video can be a great medium for capturing performances, lectures, interviews, and everyday life, but many videos are marred by shaky camera work, awkward zooms, and barely audible audio. By learning a few simple techniques, you can vastly improve the quality of your video footage. This short course covers the basics of videography, including lighting, sound, and using the different features of the camcorder such as white balance and focus control. We will illustrate key concepts using both a consumer-level camcorder and a more professional 3 chip camcorder.

While the DMC’s courses on video and audio editing focus on how to use a particular piece of software, this workshop provides a holistic introduction to the art of creating a digital story. Typically 3 to 5 minutes long, digital stories use images, audio, and video to move, inspire, or enlighten audiences. In this intensive hands-on workshop, you will learn both how to craft a compelling story and how to use multimedia software and hardware. The course will cover:
* the elements of effective digital stories
* using words, images, and sound to tell a story
* scanning and editing images
* recording and editing narration

Flash enables you to create unique animations and interactive “movies” on the web. In this workshop, we will cover how to make a simple animation and how to make an interactive “movie” similar to what you see on the Rice home page.
112 Documentary Production (6 week class)

Produce a short documentary using your own or DMC equipment in this six session course. Making a 2-3 minute video about an aspect of Rice for the upcoming student video contest will be encouraged, but other short projects will do – or students may choose a topic from a list.
Areas covered will be:
* Optimizing the image: camera, lens, and lighting techniques
* Recording good, clean sound
* Developing a compelling script
* Acquiring additional audio and video assets
* Digital editing in Final Cut Pro – including effects such as blue screen
* Producing a DVD and posting on the web.
Up to ten students will be teamed up in groups of two to produce their projects. The class will meet on six Tuesday nights from 7-9 pm: February 10, 17, 24 and March 10, 17, 24 in the DMC. Camera and editing equipment will also be available outside of class hours. The course will be taught by filmmaker Doug Killgore (Wiess ’69), who has written and produced dozens of short documentaries and the feature film “The Trust” – the story of the murder of William Marsh Rice. 4. Guatemala International Service Project Summer 2009
The Community Involvement Center's thirteenth annual International
Service Project will once again be returning to San Lucas Toliman,
Guatemala. Guatemala has the largest population of any country in
Central America, however about 80% of its citizens live in poverty and
two-thirds of that number--or 7.6 million people--live in extreme
poverty. Guatemala's infant mortality and illiteracy rates are also
among the worst in the hemisphere.
Join the Community Involvement Center as a participant in this amazing
two-week service immersion experience this summer (approximately May
10-24, 2009) in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala.

Please remind your residents to lock their bikes to a bike rack using a U-shaped lock that connects the frame to the rack. These locks are available at the police station for only $10. Thieves can easily cut through a cable lock. In addition, locks that feed through the front tire do not deter thieves since they can remove the front wheel and steal the bike.

There’s more to doing research on the web than typing a few keywords into Google. As the Web has evolved, it has become a more powerful platform for finding and organizing information, sharing knowledge, and presenting ideas in an interactive, dynamic way. By using free Web 2.0 tools and resources such as those cataloged at Digital Research Tools (http://digitalresearchtools.pbwiki.com/), researchers can conduct, manage and disseminate research more effectively. This workshop will provide an overview to some of the most compelling Web 2.0 applications particularly relevant for researchers, such as:
* Constructing effective searches
* Keeping up-to-date with research using RSS feeds
* Managing and sharing citations using del.icio.us
* Creating bibliographies using Zotero
* Disseminating research using blogs and digital repositories

Managing citations can be a real pain—you have to either type or copy and paste bibliographic information, keep up with the source of each quotation, and worry about formatting your bibliography properly. Enter Zotero (http://www.zotero.org), which bills itself as “a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives right where you do your work — in the web browser itself.” With Zotero, a tool designed by scholars for scholars, you can automatically download citation information, store PDFs of articles, add keywords to make your sources easy to find, search your research collections, and automatically create bibliographies and footnotes as you write. Zotero's simplicity and power have earned it praise from Inside Higher Education and PC Magazine, as well as countless enthusiastic researchers. This hands-on workshop will introduce some of the key functions of Zotero. By investing a couple of hours to learn Zotero, you can save yourself from spending countless hours trying to remember where you put that article and doing data entry and formatting.

Through podcasting, you can make it easy for audiences to download and listen to lectures, performances, or your own musings; all you need is simple (and free) audio editing software, a decent microphone, and access to a web server. In this course on podcasting, you will learn what a podcast is, how to record, edit and enhance the underlying audio, and how to make your podcast available online.

Are you an amateur photographer who would like to take your skills to the next level? Mystified by all the special features that your digital camera offers? This free short course teaches photography basics, camera adjustments, and techniques on choosing different types of cameras. It will cover photographic terms such as aperture, shutter speed, iso, and exposure. It will also discuss camera scene mode selections, exposure compensation, priority shooting modes, etc., as well as look at the differences between DSLR and Point & Shoot cameras.

Video can be a great medium for capturing performances, lectures, interviews, and everyday life, but many videos are marred by shaky camera work, awkward zooms, and barely audible audio. By learning a few simple techniques, you can vastly improve the quality of your video footage. This short course covers the basics of videography, including lighting, sound, and using the different features of the camcorder such as white balance and focus control. We will illustrate key concepts using both a consumer-level camcorder and a more professional 3 chip camcorder.

While the DMC’s courses on video and audio editing focus on how to use a particular piece of software, this workshop provides a holistic introduction to the art of creating a digital story. Typically 3 to 5 minutes long, digital stories use images, audio, and video to move, inspire, or enlighten audiences. In this intensive hands-on workshop, you will learn both how to craft a compelling story and how to use multimedia software and hardware. The course will cover:
* the elements of effective digital stories
* using words, images, and sound to tell a story
* scanning and editing images
* recording and editing narration
* editing video
* outputting video and uploading it to sites such as YouTube

Flash enables you to create unique animations and interactive “movies” on the web. In this workshop, we will cover how to make a simple animation and how to make an interactive “movie” similar to what you see on the Rice home page.
112 Documentary Production (6 week class)

Produce a short documentary using your own or DMC equipment in this six session course. Making a 2-3 minute video about an aspect of Rice for the upcoming student video contest will be encouraged, but other short projects will do – or students may choose a topic from a list.
Areas covered will be:
* Optimizing the image: camera, lens, and lighting techniques
* Recording good, clean sound
* Developing a compelling script
* Acquiring additional audio and video assets
* Digital editing in Final Cut Pro – including effects such as blue screen
* Producing a DVD and posting on the web.
Up to ten students will be teamed up in groups of two to produce their projects. The class will meet on six Tuesday nights from 7-9 pm: February 10, 17, 24 and March 10, 17, 24 in the DMC. Camera and editing equipment will also be available outside of class hours. The course will be taught by filmmaker Doug Killgore (Wiess ’69), who has written and produced dozens of short documentaries and the feature film “The Trust” – the story of the murder of William Marsh Rice. Please remind your residents to lock their bikes to a bike rack using a U-shaped lock that connects the frame to the rack. These locks are available at the police station for only $10. Thieves can easily cut through a cable lock. In addition, locks that feed through the front tire do not deter thieves since they can remove the front wheel and steal the bike.

9. Will Rice Philanthropy Funding
This spring if you are in a group/club etc that is trying to raise money and plans on going around to ask the colleges for donations it's going to work a little differently this year for Will Rice. We are trying out a new system of distributing philanthropic funds to various campus groups. To receive funds from the Will Rice College Diet you must apply for funds from the Philanthropy Committee. The official deadline to apply for funds from Will Rice is Saturday January 31st for all non Will Rice sponsored groups such as alternate spring breaks, ktru, and humed trips etc. Will Ricers involved in these groups will have this same deadline. We will, however, likely accept a few applications a few days late because this message is getting out a little late, lets say the absolute last day is Wednesday Feb 4. Richard Zansitis joined Rice University as General Counsel in February 2001. Before entering higher education law in 1985, he practiced as a labor and employment attorney with law firms in New York and Chicago. Seeking new challenges, he joined the University of Chicago's Office of Legal Counsel while simultaneously pursuing a doctorate in legal history there (Rice News, Jan 25, 2001). He continues his academic interests with memberships in the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Society for Legal History.
This talk has been organized by the Humanities Research Center on behalf of its Undergraduate Fellowship Program. All Rice students are invited to attend the talk, which is part of the speaker series "Big Questions and Future Directions in the Humanities."

The GIS/Data Center is looking for student assistants to help with a variety of GIS and map initiatives. Duties include creating technical documents, hands-on exercises, and brochures; helping people to use GIS/Data Center facilities such as the plotter, printer and CD burners; assisting with an inventory of a large map collection; and assisting GIS/Data Center staff in the creation and processing of datasets and customizing GIS and web-based applications.
GIS is a rapidly growing field with uses in many careers like architecture, business, government and politics, and planning. In fact, a growing number of employers now require knowledge of GIS. Come learn or further your knowledge and earn money too.

9. Will Rice Philanthropy Funding
This spring if you are in a group/club etc that is trying to raise money and plans on going around to ask the colleges for donations it's going to work a little differently this year for Will Rice. We are trying out a new system of distributing philanthropic funds to various campus groups. To receive funds from the Will Rice College Diet you must apply for funds from the Philanthropy Committee. The official deadline to apply for funds from Will Rice is Saturday January 31st for all non Will Rice sponsored groups such as alternate spring breaks, ktru, and humed trips etc. Will Ricers involved in these groups will have this same deadline. We will, however, likely accept a few applications a few days late because this message is getting out a little late, lets say the absolute last day is Wednesday Feb 4. Applications are available online at http://willrice.org/ or in paper in the will rice commons next to the pdr (entrance closest to baker and old dorm). Richard Zansitis joined Rice University as General Counsel in February 2001. Before entering higher education law in 1985, he practiced as a labor and employment attorney with law firms in New York and Chicago. Seeking new challenges, he joined the University of Chicago's Office of Legal Counsel while simultaneously pursuing a doctorate in legal history there (Rice News, Jan 25, 2001). He continues his academic interests with memberships in the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Society for Legal History.
This talk has been organized by the Humanities Research Center on behalf of its Undergraduate Fellowship Program. All Rice students are invited to attend the talk, which is part of the speaker series "Big Questions and Future Directions in the Humanities."

Effective Monday, January 12, 2009, the Rice Graduate Route will serve the Graduate Apartments at 1515 Bissonnet and 2410 Shakespeare in the Rice Village.

1. Power Shift 2009 -- Youth Climate Change Conference in DC!
What is Power Shift? It is an awesome conference that first occurred in November 2007 with thousands of students heading to DC to hear cool speakers, listen to panels, attend workshops, and get active about stopping climate change.
POWER SHIFT 2009 will take place from Feb 27 - Mar 2. This is during our Spring Break, so if you want to go, you wouldn't even have to miss class! So far, incredible speakers like Van Jones, Ralph Nader, and Bill McKibben have already been confirmed.
Anyone interested should contact Lila Holzman (Lila.Holzman@rice.edu). Beginning next semester, Environmental Club will be fundraising to help support those attending this conference.

Alternative Spring Break has partnered with Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com) to run a book drive that will benefit Books for Africa (www.booksforafrica.org) and we would love to have your support!
Donate your college-level books and workbooks published within the past 10 years (highlighting/writing in books is fine) in the big green and orange collection boxes in all college commons and at the bookstore which will remain up until Wednesday, January 14. TC Party for the college that donates the most!
Books collected will be put up for sale online to raise a sustainable stream of funding for Books for Africa or sent directly to African schools. If the books cannot be donated or sold, they are recycled. Drives like this one have earned over $1,700,000 for Books for Africa since 2003.

The city is run by Johann 'Joh' Fredersen (Alfred Abel).”

Chinatown (121 minutes, color, 1974)
Chinatown is set in the 1930s and portrays water department corruption. The characters Hollis Mulwray and Noah Cross are both references to the chief engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, William Mulholland (1855-1935) — the name Hollis Mulwray is partially an anagram for Mulholland. The name Noah is a reference to a flood — to suggest the conflict between good and evil in Mulholland. Mulholland was the designer and engineer for the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which brought water from the Owens Valley to Los Angeles. The dam Cross and the city want to build is opposed by Mulwray for reasons of engineering and safety. Mulwray says he will not make the same mistake as when he built a previous dam, which broke resulting in the deaths of hundreds. This is a direct reference to the St/ Francis Dam disaster. The dam was personally inspected by Mulholland himself before it catastrophically failed the next morning on March 12, 1928. More than 450 people, many of them school children died that day and the town of Santa Paula was buried. The incident effectively ended Mulholland's career and he died in 1935.

Taking place over the course of over two decades, City of God tells the story of Ciadade de Deus (Portuguese for City of God), a lower class quarter west of Rio de Janeiro. The film is told from the viewpoint of a boy named Rocket (Busca pé in Portuguese) who grows up there as a fishmonger's son, and demonstrates the desperation and violence inherent in the slums. Based on a real story, the movie depicts drug abuse, violent crime, and a boy's struggle to free himself from the slums' grasp.

Megacities is a documentary that deals with the human experiences of work, poverty, violence, love and sex. It is a film about human beauty in twelve chapters which tells the tales of people from Bombay, Mexico City, Moscow and New York, who are all struggling for survival, with ingenuity, intelligence and dignity. They all share the dream of a better life in the Big City at the dawn of a new millennium. A time when “the world city” is the dominant habitat for the majority of the Earth’s population. Social Life of Small Urban Spaces (60 minutes, 1988, William H. Whyte)
Whyte's classic 1980 study of New York's plazas started a mini-revolution in urban planning and design. In the 1970’s William H. Whyte convinced the New York City planning commission that if his team could determine what makes open spaces work, they would change the zoning laws to require that those elements be part of public plazas. Whyte's team, The Street Life Project, got to work. They selected plazas and parks that were well used. Then they set up cameras. They made diagrams. They wandered around and collected information about how people used the spaces. They documented the act of people eating lunch, shaking hands, moving chairs, and talking to themselves. Then they sorted through it, producing quantitative results. The final outcome was that the city accepted the research, and wrote a new zoning resolution for open spaces that reflected The Street Life Project's conclusions.

6. Rice University Citizens Police Academy
Class # 5 of the Rice University Citizens Police Academy begins next week, January 13. We have received great interest through our initial registration and are eagerly looking forward to another exciting time.
That being said, we have five spaces still open for anyone interested in experiencing the “behind the scenes” look at law enforcement and the Rice University Police Department as well as going through various phases of police training.
The class is held each Tuesday evening at the police department law enforcement training center from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

The Student Director of Orientation is responsible for leading a team
of peers (College O-Week Coordinators) in the planning and execution
of a comprehensive, seven day O-Week containing university-wide and
college specific components. This position also participates in post
O-Week assessment and focus group activities, plays an active role in
the coordination of Mid-Year Orientation and participates in the
selection of the next year's Student Director. Ideally, a Student
Director will be a former Coordinator/Head Fellow and a rising Senior,

Position: HR student assistant
Description: The HR student assistant will help in recruiting job candidates for the Resource Development division. They will be responsible for proactively searching for potential candidates online and inputting their information into our database. They will also help with advertising open job positions and scheduling interviews. The student assistant will also help with special projects such as new employee orientation, identifying and scheduling professional development opportunities, and division newsletters.
Location: We are located at 5620 Greenbriar, which is across the street from the stadium. The Rice shuttle has a stop here.
Compensation: $10/hr
Hours: 5-6 hours/week. We prefer the student assistant work 3 hours twice a week sometime between the hours of 8:30 and 3:00 if possible.

The film is told from the viewpoint of a boy named Rocket (Busca pé in Portuguese) who grows up there as a fishmonger's son, and demonstrates the desperation and violence inherent in the slums. Based on a real story, the movie depicts drug abuse, violent crime, and a boy's struggle to free himself from the slums' grasp.

Megacities: 12 Stories of Survival (1998, 90 minutes, directed by Michael Glawogger)
Megacities is a documentary that deals with the human experiences of work, poverty, violence, love and sex. It is a film about human beauty in twelve chapters which tells the tales of people from Bombay, Mexico City, Moscow and New York, who are all struggling for survival, with ingenuity, intelligence and dignity. They all share the dream of a better life in the Big City at the dawn of a new millennium. A time when “the world city” is the dominant habitat for the majority of the Earth’s population. In the tradition of Mondo Cane (1961), this Austrian-Swiss documentary captures the eccentric underside of human behavior in a variety of slum settings throughout the world -- Moscow (subway thieves, a downbeat detox clinic, depressing life of a female factory-worker), Mexico City (family dining on chicken-feet soup, customers groping a nightclub stripper, dogs at dawn in a garbage dump), New York (a street hustler, a radio call-in show), Bombay (back-alley poverty, waders in polluted rivers). Social Life of Small Urban Spaces (60 minutes, 1988, William H. Whyte)
Whyte's classic 1980 study of New York's plazas started a mini-revolution in urban planning and design. In the 1970’s William H. Whyte convinced the New York City planning commission that if his team could determine what makes open spaces work, they would change the zoning laws to require that those elements be part of public plazas. Whyte's team, The Street Life Project, got to work. They selected plazas and parks that were well used. Then they set up cameras. They made diagrams. They wandered around and collected information about how people used the spaces. They documented the act of people eating lunch, shaking hands, moving chairs, and talking to themselves. Then they sorted through it, producing quantitative results. The final outcome was that the city accepted the research, and wrote a new zoning resolution for open spaces that reflected The Street Life Project's conclusions.

6. Rice University Citizens Police Academy
Class # 5 of the Rice University Citizens Police Academy begins next week, January 13. We have received great interest through our initial registration and are eagerly looking forward to another exciting time.
That being said, we have five spaces still open for anyone interested in experiencing the “behind the scenes” look at law enforcement and the Rice University Police Department as well as going through various phases of police training.
The class is held each Tuesday evening at the police department law enforcement training center from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

8. Student Director of Orientation Applications Available
The Student Director of Orientation is responsible for leading a team
of peers (College O-Week Coordinators) in the planning and execution
of a comprehensive, seven day O-Week containing university-wide and
college specific components. This position also participates in post
O-Week assessment and focus group activities, plays an active role in
the coordination of Mid-Year Orientation and participates in the
selection of the next year's Student Director. Ideally, a Student
Director will be a former Coordinator/Head Fellow and a rising Senior,
but that is not absolutely necessary. Applications are due January

11. Student worker position
Position: HR student assistant
Description: The HR student assistant will help in recruiting job candidates for the Resource Development division. They will be responsible for proactively searching for potential candidates online and inputting their information into our database. They will also help with advertising open job positions and scheduling interviews. The student assistant will also help with special projects such as new employee orientation, identifying and scheduling professional development opportunities, and division newsletters.
Location: We are located at 5620 Greenbriar, which is across the street from the stadium. The Rice shuttle has a stop here.
Compensation: $10/hr
Hours: 5-6 hours/week. We prefer the student assistant work 3 hours twice a week sometime between the hours of 8:30 and 3:00 if possible.
